Richard Carey MD of Weston, Newtownbarry (reverted to it's old name of Bunclody in 1952,
it was renamed Newtownbarry by James Barry Sheriff of Dublin 1577) married Elizabeth Browne
at Gorey on 16 Nov 1841. She was the youngest daughter of the Rev Peter Browne, Dean of
Ferns. It was a double wedding as her sister Catherine married Michael Bingham Kelly, a
nephew of Lord Clanmorris at the same time and place. Richard was Medical officer of the
Newtownbarry Dispensary District and Fever Hospital. He died at Newtownbarry on 28 Jan 1868.
1 Richard Browne Carey, eldest son, born 2 Oct 1842 at Newtownbarry followed in his
father's footsteps and qualified as a surgeon and physician. He married Selina Phoebe
Bashford, eldest daughter of Frederick George Bashford of Ely place at St Anne's Dublin
30 Jun 1868. He was appointed Medical office for the Borris Dispensary District and St
Mullin's, Carlow in 1869. He bred Irish Terriers. Richard died 1 Feb 1913 at Lynton,
Dundrum, Co Dublin.
2 Alicia Dorcas Carey eldest daughter born 6 Jan 1844, married Captain Blackett, Royal Navy
of Wylam Northumberland at St Mary's Dublin on 15 Sep 1870.
3 Jane Elizabeth Bell Carey, youngest daughter married Edward J Vie, Asst Master of Bedford
Grammar School at Borris, Co Carlow on 30 Jul 1885.
4 Thomas Stephen Carey born at Newtownbarry, Co Wexford circa 1852 married Ellen Henrietta Jones,
the daughter of Augustus Jones. Thomas was a brewer's cashier and a breeder of Irish Terriers and
Irish Water Spaniels. They lived at Overton, Dundrum from 1883 to 1895 before moving to
Bellevue, Kilmacud road. He traversed the county until his death as a dog judge at agricultural shows.
1 Thomas Augustus Carey, eldest son born 20 Nov 1883 at Overton, Dundrum. In 1908, he
became engaged to Evelyn Isabel Kelly of Jaffna, Ceylon only daughter of Col GC Kelly of
Southsea in Hants. Second Lieutenant Thomas Augustus Carey, 1st Batt. Irish Guards,
was killed in action on December 5th, gallantly leading his men to victory “over the top”.
He had a distinguished career in Dublin University, and played full back on their 1st hockey
team. He entered the Ceylon Civil Service circa 1907 as Assistant Government Agent at Kandy.
He was well known as a good sportsman and big game shot, and was only 34 years of age
when he was killed in action in France. He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial,
Louverval Nord in France.
2 Richard Arthur Carey born 28 Aug 1884 at Overton, Dundrum died a few hours later and was
buried at Taney.
3 L’Estange Carey born 16 Nov 1885 at Overton, Dundrum. He moved to New York in 1911 and
worked for the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank.
4 Elinor Sibel Carey born circa 17 Oct 1888 at Overton, Dundrum attended the Metropolitan
School of Art in Dublin from 1911 to 1914 and won prized for her designs for Carrickmacross
lace. She married William Ernest Jolley 3 Jun 1914 at Taney Church. Elinor died in 1963 at
Cowper Road.
5 Hilda Elizabeth Carey born 23 Feb 1895 at Holles Street Hospital moved to her aunt Mabel West
and went to school in Devon.
5 Denis Augustus Carey, youngest son born circa 1857 died age 13 at The Abbey, Co Tipperary on 24 Mar 1871.
