Matthew Canny JP of Castle Fergus, Co Clare married Jane Hall of Limerick. Jane was the
daughter of Captain John Hall and Elizabeth Dwyer. She was the sister of General Gage
Hall of the 70th Regiment and the sister in law of Sir John Allan de Burgo, 3rd Baronet of
Castle Conel. Matthew died at his residence Violet Hill, North Strand, Limerick on
22 Aug 1812. Her brother Gage died in 1853 and left his Castle Lake estate and 50K to
his sisters and their children. Jane died 3 Oct 1857 at 3 Sweetbriar Park, Tramore.
1 John Canny born 27 Oct 1808 was a lieutenant in the 99th Regiment. He married
Sarah Green of Youghal on 4 Dec 1828 at St Mary’s Shandon. Sarah was the
daughter of James Green and Anne Hennis. John sold his commission for 5K in
1838 and moved to Donnybrook. They emigrated to Natal in 1861 and settled in
Pietermaritzburg. Sarah emigrated to Boston in 1871 and John died circa
21 Oct 1879 in Natal.
1 Jane Anne Canny baptised 25 Jan 1830 at Killeagh, Cork.
2 Elizabeth Canny baptised 9 Nov 1831 at Killeagh, Cork married Edward Lee
Townsend in Pietermaritzburg South Africa on 7 Nov 1862. They had a least
seven children and Elizabeth died 30 July 1917 in South Africa.
3 Isabel Canny baptised 31 Dec 1832 at Killeagh, Cork thought to be in Boston
in 1897.
4 Gage John Hall Canny baptised 5 Mar 1834 at Killeagh, Cork. It appears that
Gage took a lease or purchased Harlech from Edmund Blood in 1859 and
when Harlech was sold through the encumbered court in 1868 there was an
issue with the title. Gage was listing as missing and still appeared on a
'missing beneficiaries' list of 1910.
5 Sarah Canny baptised 4 Dec 1835 at Killeagh, Cork married John Shumer in
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
1 Florence Shumer married Mr Sweeney.
6 Anne Hodge Canny baptised 14 Apr 1838 at Killeagh, Cork. Anne married
Daniel Kennedy in Boston and was living there in 1898.
7 Mary Canny born 23 Sep 1840 at Ballyglashen baptised at Killeagh, Cork.
2 Anna Canny third daughter married William Chapell Hodge at Newbury Church in
January 1834. William was the son of William Hodge of Devonport.
3 Harriet Canny, fourth daughter married William Ogilby of Kilcatlen, Co Londonderry
on 28 Feb 1850 at Cahir. Harriet died in 1893.
4 Gage George Canny born circa 1812. He joined the 99th Regiment and died
6 Oct 1839.
5 Ellen Augusta Canny youngest daughter born posthumously in February 1813 at
Richmond place married D C O’Brien of Waterloo, Co Tipperary at Newberry Church
near Mallow on 22 Apt 1840.
