John Francis born circa 1810 married Ann and when their children were quite young moved to
Dublin and traded as a tailor/Outfitter of 10 North Earl Street.
1 Thomas Joseph Callaghan born circa 1842 at Strokestown, Roscommon. His family moved
to Dublin when he was quite young. Thomas was an outfitter and shirt maker establishing
his business at 16 Dame Street in 1869. He married Catherine (Kate) Tynan on 4 Oct 1874
at the Pro Cathedral. Catherine was living at Longford and was the second daughter of the
late Thomas Tynan of Melview House, Longford. The service was conducted by the
Archbishop of Ardagh and by Gregory Callaghan, Passionist father and Thomas’ younger
brother. He purchased no 15 Dame Street from Henry Berney in 1877. They had eighteen
children of whom sixteen survived in 1911. Thomas was a Draper/tailor of 13-16 Dame
Street. He diversified in horse clothiers and saddlers. They lived at Farm Hill, Roebuck
from 1891 to 1900. He was a director of F & J Clayton & Co Ltd, (manufacturers of tweeds,
flannels and all things pure wool) in 1888. In 1895 Thomas of Farm Hill and 13 to 16 Dame
Street was appointed to the Commission of the Peace for the County of Dublin. They were
living at Earlsfort Terrace in 1901. Thomas died 26 Jun 1907 at Mountain View, Sydenham
Road, Dundrum late of Earlsfort Terrace. His funeral mass was held at Holy Cross,
Dundrum and was attended by his brothers Rev Gregory, JP, FJ and Vincent. He was buried
at Glasnevin. Catherine was living at Adelaide Road in 1911. Kate died 4 Jul 1921 aged 65
at Stephen's Green and is buried at Glasnevin. The company was still running from Dame
Street in 1867 when a life sized sculpture by John Haugh was installed in the Pony Club
Department. By 1986 they had a concession store in Brown Thomas.
1 Mary Josephine (May) Callaghan born 14 Aug 1875 at Dame Street living at Earlsfort
Terrace with her parents in 1901. She married Dr Martin Dempsey on 26 Nov 1902
at University Church, Stephen’s Green.
2 Joseph Aloysius Patrick Gabriel Callaghan born 18 Mar 1877 at 11 Dame Street
died 12 Sep 1877 aged 5 months at Longford.
3 Anne Maria Agnes Callaghan born 31 May 1878 Kingstown living at Earlsfort
Terrace with her parents in 1901.
4 Catherine Mary Callaghan (twin) born 6 Aug 1879 at Clarinda Park, Kingstown living
with her mother in 1911.
5 Madeline Margaret Mary Callaghan (twin) born 6 Aug 1879 at Clarinda Park,
Kingstown. As fourth daughter she died unmarried 27 Sep 1942 at 60 Belmont
Avenue.

7 Margaret Callaghan (twin) born 13 Feb 1882 at Dame Street.
8 Francis Xavier Joseph Callaghan born 13 Feb 1882 at Dame Street was an
undergraduate Student at the Royal University living with his parents in 1901 and
graduated in 1909. He was visiting physician to the Mater Hospital and consulting
physician to St Michael’s Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. He married Annie Rafferty on
14 Nov 1912 in Bray. Annie was the daughter of James Raverty, MD and was living at
Herbert Road, Bray. He lived at Westland Row and later moved to Fitzwilliam Square.

10 Rose Mary Carmel Callaghan seventh daughter born 11 Jul 1884 at 25
Mountjoy Square baptised at the pro Cathedral. Sister Carmel died at the
Sacred Heart Convent, Malta on 22 Nov 1954.
11 John Alphonsus Mary Callaghan (twin) born 28 Aug 1885 at 25 Mountjoy Square
educated at Clongowes Wood.
12 Thomas Mary Joseph Callaghan (twin) born 28 Aug 1885 at 25 Mountjoy Square
educated at Clongowes Wood. He was an outfitter living with his mother in 1911.
He married Maud Handerson on 14 Aug 1920 at the Pro Cathedral.
13 Joseph Mary A Callaghan fourth son born 13 Apr 1887 at 25 Mountjoy Square
educated at Clongowes Wood College. He was a tailoring assistant living with his
mother in 1911. He then went to Montreal and returned in May 1915. He applied
for a commission and was attached to the 5th Leinster Regiment. He went out to
France as a second lieutenant with the new formed Machine Gun Corps in February
1916. He was killed in action on 2 Jul 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval
Memorial, Somme, France.
14 Hilda Eleanor Mary Josephine Callaghan born 8 Apr 1888 at 25 Mountjoy Square
educated at Mount Anville. She married Harold Jones, a lieutenant in the Royal
Engineers on 20 Dec 1918 at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Exeter.
15 Bernadette Stanislaus Theresa Callaghan born 10 Jun 1889 at 25 Mountjoy Square
educated at Mount Anville.
16 Stanislaus Charles Mary Paul Callaghan sixth son born 22 Aug 1890 at Mountjoy
Square educated at Clongowes Wood. He worked in his father business and was
a saddlery assistant living with his mother in 1911. He was living at Westland Row
and married Sarah Gavan at Meedin Church, Tyrellspass, Co Westmeath on
16 Jan 1918. Sarah was from Robinstown and the daughter of Laurence Gavan, a
farmer. He died 28 Oct 1935 at Herbert Avenue, Ballsbridge. Requiem Mass was
held at Booterstown Church and he is buried at Glasnevin. He was survived by his
widow and three children.
17 Helena Margaret Mary Callaghan born 4 Jun 1892 at Farm Hill. Helen married
Eugene Coyne on 1 Aug 1918 at the University Church Stephen’s Green and they
settled in England. Helen died at Wandsworth in 1934. Eugene died in 1942
survived by a son and two daughters.
18 Louis Bertrand Michael Joseph Callaghan born 8 Oct 1894 at Stephen’s Green,
Dublin baptised at St Kevin’s Church, Harrington Street, parents were resident at
Farm Hill. He was educated at Clongowes Wood. He emigrated to Canada in
1913 and later lived at Cook, Illinois, America.
2 Gregory Callaghan born 21 Mar 1843 at Strokestown, Roscommon. He was educated at
Father Grimley’s private school, curate of St Paul’s Arran Quay. He joined the Passionate
Fathers in 1862 and was later Provincial of the order. He died at Mount Argus on 28 Apr 1911.
3 John Callaghan, a priest who officiated at family weddings.
4 Francis Joseph (Frank) Callaghan born circa 1849 in Roscommon. He was living at North
Earl Street and married Eleanor Teresa (Ellie) Hayden on 6 Aug 1878 at Star of the Sea
Church, Sandymount. Ellie was the daughter of E A Hayden of St Aenand’s, Merrion, Co
Dublin. Ellie died 18 Apr 1886 at Glennville, Donnybrook Road.

Francis secondly married Margaret O’Brien on 6 Jun 1887 at Booterstown Church and had
at least two further children. Margaret was living at Oakley Park, Blackrock and was the
daughter of the late Peter O’Brien. The partnership with his brother Thomas was dissolved
in 1896 and he had his own horse accessory firm running from the premises. Frank a
well know horse breeder died on 17 Apr 1918. His son Frank carried on the business at
Dame Street until his own death at Buenos Aires in 1923.
John Francis secondly married Kate Frances. He died on 23 Mar 1874 at North Earl Street. Kate
died on 17 Jan 1905 aged 80 at 5 Victoria Terrace, her daughter in law Jane Callaghan, the informant.
Both John and Kate are buried at Glasnevin.
5 Joseph Patrick Callaghan born circa 1851 in Roscommon. He was an outfitter and married
Croasdella Bolger on 30 Apr 1892 at St Michael’s Church, Kingstown. Croasdella was the
daughter of the late James Bolger, a wine merchant and the late Croasdella Elizabeth
Cruess. He ran J P Callaghan Outfitters and tailoring of 9/10 North Earl Street and
expanded into 19 Sackville Street in 1898. They lived at Sloperton before moving to Ferndene
in Blackrock. Three of their sons were killed during WW1. Joseph died 14 Nov 1935 and
Croasdella died 29 Jun 1940 at Foxrock. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 Joseph Cruess Callaghan born 4 Mar 1893 at Sloperton, Monkstown. He was an Irish
flying ace of the First World War, credited with five aerial victories. He was awarded
he MC for his service in France. Major Callaghan was killed on 2 Jul 1918.
2 Croasdella Mary Callaghan born 5 Jul 1894 at Sloperton, Monkstown. She married
Nicholas Haligan on 10 Mar 1919 at Blackrock Church.
3 Stanislaus Cruess Callaghan born 14 Sep 1895 at Sloperton, Monkstown. Captain
Callaghan was killed in a flying accident while serving in Royal Flying Corps Canada on
27 June 1917.
4 Eugene (Owen) Cruess Callaghan born 4 Dec 1897 at Sloperton educated at Stonyhurst
and Belvedere College, Dublin. He entered Trinity college but on the outbreak of war
joined the Royal Flying Corps. Second Lieutenant Callaghan was killed in action on
26 Aug 1916 while serving in No 19 Squadron RFC in France.
5 George Bolger Callaghan born 2 June 1906 at Baggot Street, parents resident at Ferndene.
6 Cedric Cruess Joseph Callaghan born 15 Mar 1908 at Holles Street, parents resident in
Blackrock. He married Geraldine Maeve Mitchell.
6 Vincent Callaghan born circa 1861 in Dublin. He was an outfitter living at Dame Street and
married Jane McEvoy on 7 Feb 1893 at the Church of the Holy Family, Dublin. They lived at
Victoria Terrace, NCR and they had six children of whom four survived in 1911.
