John Philip Butler born circa 1856 son of John Butler was educated at Blackrock College.
He was a wine merchant of 138 Pembroke Road and married Mary Bolger of 1 Idrone
Terrace, Blackrock daughter of Richard Bolger in 1881. Witnesses: Thomas Neary and
Croasdella Bolger. He retired as a wine merchant of William Street in 1909. They lived
at South Hill House from 1908 to 1912. He became a member of the Stock Exchange in
1913 and jointly with Hubert Briscoe founded the firm of Butler & Briscoe, stockbrokers.
He was a director of the National Bank and later vice chairman. They lived temporarily at
the Russell Hotel before moving to 40 Fitzwilliam Place and later to Clonard, Killiney. He
was president of the Blackrock Past Pupils union from 1913 to 1914 and a trustee of the
National Maternity Hospital. He was a governor of Cork Street Hospital and worked also
for the St Vincent de Paul Society. Mary Teresa died at St Vincent's Private Hospital, 96
Lower Leeson Street on 25.12.1926 and John died at Clonard, Killiney on 24.11.1940. Both
were buried at Glasnevin. John left 90K in personal estate.
1 Constance Mary Josephine Butler born 01.10.1882 at 15 Trafalgar Terrace,
Monkstown married R Willoughby Allen, junior in Buenos Ayres in January 1914. He
was the only son of the late Rev Robert Allen.
2 Richard Bolger Butler born 26.06.1884 at 15 Trafalgar Terrace. Lieut Colonel Richard
Butler of the 30th Lancers, Indian Cavalry married Marjorie Steward Pullar of Perth,
Scotland youngest daughter of Albert Pullar of Durn, Perth on 26.02.1921 at
Brompton Oratory, London. Colonel Richard Butler was awarded the Military Cross.
3 Marie Carmele Butler born 29.07.1889 at 15 Trafalgar Terrace.
4 Edward William James Butler born 24.12.1891 at 1 Seapoint Terrace was educated at
Blackrock College and the Oratory School. He enlisted in November 1914 and was
seriously wounded in at the attack on Messines-Wytschaete Ridge in June 1917. He
was treated at the Officer's Hospital at Park Lane before being transferred to the Red
Cross Hospital at Glengarrif, Cork (now the Eccles Hotel). He transferred to the
Worcestershire Regiment and was promoted to major. Major Edmund Butler of HM
2nd Life Guards of South Hill, Blackrock and 40 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin died from
wounds received on 18.04.1918 aged 26 years at the Military Hospital, Camiers, France.
Probate to John P Butler. He is commemorated on the War Memorial at St Mary's
Church, Haddington Road. He was awarded the Military Cross,
5 Mildred Mary Brady Butler born 17.05.1894 at 1 Seapoint Terrace. Mildred married
Lieut Stanley Ivie Gribble of the RAF of 4 Shrewsbury Road son of George Gribble on
30.11.1918 at the Registrar’s Office, Dublin. Witnesses Michael McCluskey and
Thomas Reilly.
6 Leonard William Martin Butler born 08.11.1897 at 1 Seapoint Terrace educated at
Blackrock College and Downside Abbey. Lieutenant Leonard Butler of the 4th
Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers was killed in action at Fontaine-les-Croisilles in the
Battle of Cambria on 20.11.1917 aged 20 years. He is commemorated on the War
Memorial at St Mary's, Haddington, Road and on the Downside War Memorial.
7 Desmond Barry Butler youngest son born 28.12.1900 at 1 Seapoint Terrace.
Desmond married Doris Guinevere Meredith only daughter of late Frederick
Walkingham Meredith of Lordello, Shankill on 29.04.1926 at the Church of St Mary of
the Angels, Bayswater, London. Desmond a government stockbroker of the firm Butler
and Briscoe died while on holiday on 15.10.1967 aged 66 in Switzerland.
