Henry Bussell born circa 1808 at Stroud in Gloucestershire to John Bussell & Elizabeth Tanner was
in Dublin by 1826. With the Robinson family he patented ‘Improved arrangement of serpentine
passages and valves for cornopeans etc’. He married Elizabeth Barton on 18 Jan 1829 at St Mary’s
Parish, Dublin. Elizabeth was the daughter of James Murray Barton, attorney of Dorset Street and
Mary Brabazon. She was also the niece of Lady Rossmore. He was the organist at Booterstown
Church from 1831 to 1841 and organist to the Chapel Royal from 1854 to 1870. He collaborated
with the famous Robinson family; John, Joseph & Francis Robinson - composers, conductors, and
professors of music, to publish ‘The 150 Psalms of David”. For a vast number of years he was the
secretary and conductor of the Philharmonic Society of Dublin and gave regular concerts at the
Antient Concert Rooms.
The Bussells had a least eleven children and moved from Abbeyville on the corner of Cross Avenue
and Mount Merrion Avenue to St Leonards, Avoca Avenue in 1860. Henry was in partnership with
the Robinsons and their music wareroom & music publishing business traded from 7
Westmoreland Street and 39 Fleet Street. They were importers of pianoforte, harps, harmoniums,
music sellers and, manufacturers and dealers in musical Instruments. Henry took over as
proprietor of the firm in 1853 and had the patronage of the Lord Lieutenant. He published
“Christmas and New Year's Chimes” in 1860 which was very successful. The business was
transferred to a limited company in 1873 but was was insolvent in 1879 and put into liquidation. He
was Hon Sec and later President of the Irish Musical Fund Society (founded in 1793) from 1845 until
his death. Elizabeth died at St Leonards on 23 Oct 1875. Henry died at 2 Willow Terrace,
Williamstown on 3 Apr 1882.
1 Georgina Elizabeth Bussell eldest daughter born circa 1832 married Rev Arthur Percival
Doherty at Stillorgan Church on 6 Apr 1865. Arthur was the son of William Doherty,
clergyman and was the incumbent of Ballyscullion Grange, Co Antrim. Georgina died at
St Leonards on 30 Sep 1871.

2 Emma Bussell second daughter born circa 1834 died at Abbeyville, Booterstown on
1 Jun 1854.
3 Mary Brabazon Bussell, second daughter born circa 1835 married Henry Robert Green on
12 Dec 1860 at Stillorgan. Henry was the son of Henry Green, Rector of Ballyclog, Armagh.
Mary died at 46 Georges Avenue, Blackrock on 23 Feb 1924 and was buried at
Deansgrange.
4 Gustavus William Henry Bussell, eldest son born circa 1831 attended the Dublin Military
Academy in Brunswick Street, enlisted with the 23rd Foot and attained the rank of
Captain. He took part in the siege of Lucknow and was severely wounded. He was with the
23rd Regiment and died in India on 28 Apr 1867.
5 Edward Bussell, second son born circa 1837. He died, late of the 21st Fusiliers stationed at
Vallary in the East Indies, on the Red Sea on 26 Dec 1865 on his passage to India.
6 Barton Thomas Bussell born circa 1842 at Booterstown graduated Trinity College and took
Holy orders. He was Vicar of Meare from 1870 to 1908, Rector of Yeovilton from 1908 to
1918. He married Catherine Mary Comins from Australia in 1878 and they had at least two
daughters. He died 22 Nov 1930 at 4 New Street, Wells and his funeral was held at Wells
Cathedral.
7 Frederick George Bussell, born circa 1844 graduated Trinity College and took Holy orders.
He was ordained to the perpetual curacy of Saint Andrew, Stainland, Halifax in 1882. He
married Margaret Margaret Garvock at St Paul’s Church Onslow Square on 13 Nov 1884.
Margaret was the daughter of Sir John Garvock, GCB. Frederick died 11 Apr 1908 at
Oakridge, St Albans.
8 Sidney Parkinson Bussell, third son born circa 1845 graduated Trinity and admitted Kings
Inns in 1860, he subsequently worked for his father and another solicitor. He married
Emily Louisa Durham at Anglesey in 1869. He was granted a licence to practice in 1870.
They had at least eight children and had moved to Australia by 1885. Sidney died at New
South Wales on 8 Sep 1915.
