Burton Family of Recess Blackrock
Samuel Pierpoint Burton, son of E W Burton of Cullenswood and Clifton,Co Galway
married Hannah Mallet in March 1808.
1 Rev Robert Nathaniel Burton. He married Isabella Walsh in August 1833 at
Cookstown. Isabella was the second daughter of William Hamilton Walsh a
Captain in the 8th Regiment and granddaughter to Claudius Hamilton of Beltrim
Castle, Co Tyrone. In 1835 Robert was chaplain to The Garrison. He was Vicar of
Borris and of Clonagoose in County Carlow by 1839 and chaplain to Lady Harriett
Kavanagh. He died on Christmas Eve 1850 from Typhus survived by his wife and
nine young children. Shortly after his death a subscription was raised for the
family and they received an anonymous donation of £50 via the La Touche bank.
Isabella died aged 56 on 22.03.1870 at Kingsland Park, late of Albert Lodge.
1 Hannah Cordelia Sophia Burton born circa 1837 in Claremorris, Co Mayo
lived at Recess from 1874 to 1881. She was living with her sisters Mary
and Emily at Barnstable in 1921. She died a spinster on 02.04.1926 at
Barnstable and left 1K in personal estate.
2 Edward Theodore Burton born circa 1842 in Carlow. He was a retired
army surgeon in 1921 living in Handsworth, Staffordshire. His daughter
Mary Elizabeth Burton was living with him.
3 Henry Burton born circa 1843 in Carlow was a solicitor. He lived at Albert
Lodge Donnybrook in 1868 with his brother Frederick, and in 1873 he
was living at Inishfallen, Howth. In 1874 he was secretary to the Solicitor’s
Benevolent Association with offices at Wellington Quay and his residence
was Montpelier Recess. He married Fanny Burton daughter of late Edward
William Burton, staff surgeon of Corbally on 31.08.1874 at St Muchin's
Parish Church, Limerick. Henry died 02.04.1931 and was buried at Mount
Jerome. Fanny died 01.08.1941 and was buried at Mount Jerome.

Ranelagh, Lieutenant of the 5th Munsters died on 31.08.1900 at
Ojesu Kumasi Ashanti, Africa.

3 Olive Burton born 10.10.1878 at 3 Cullenswood Place, Ranelagh

baptised at Lesson Park Church. Beatrice died on 22.04.1897 aged
14½ years at 59 Upper Leeson Street.

4 Isabella Julia Burton third daughter married Frederick Gifford on
27.04.1872 at St George’s Church, Dublin. Frederick of Hardwicke
Street was the son of William Gifford, surgeon. They had twelve children
of whom eleven survived in 1911.

married Joseph Mary Plunkett on 03.05.1916.

to1881. Emily only surviving daughter died a spinster on 04.07.1931 at
3 Orchard Terrace, Barnstable, Devon. She left 2K in personal estate.

InishFallen in 1870. He married Amelia Frances (Amy) Manifold on
04.06.1879 at St Peter’s Church Dublin. Amy was the daughter of
William Manifold. They were living in Rathmines with their six children
in 1901.
8 Alfred Burton, youngest born July 1844 in Carlow. He graduated Trinity,
took Holy orders and was ordained in 1870. He married Georgina
Augusta Dalison on 1 May 1878. Georgina was the eldest daughter of
the Rev Beauvoir Dalison, rector of Upwell. Alfred was rector of
Stetchworth for 46 years and died in 1929.

9 Mary Burton born posthumously on 15.07.1851 at Drogheda, Co Louth
lived at Recess from 1874 to 1881. She was living with sisters Emily and
Hanna in 1921 and died 12.06.1928 at Barnstable.
2 Frederick William Burton born 08.04.1816 in Mungret, Co Limerick* was an Irish
historical painter and a member of the RHA. One of his most famous works
is 'The meeting on the turret stairs'. He was Director of the National Gallery of
England from 1874. He was engaged but never married and took responsibility
for his brother Robert’s children. He was knighted in 1884 and retired in 1893.
He died in Kensington on 16.03.1900. His longtime friend the antiquarian,
Margaret Stokes died just months later. His body was repatriated and he was
buried at Mount Jerome.
