William Broome son of George Broome born circa 1747 lived at Dublin Castle yard. His mother died
in August 1779 and his father who was the riding master at Dublin Castle died 20 Dec 1779 aged 60
and was buried at St Weburgh's. His brother in law Thomas Duplex, a laceman of Castle Street and
Anneskenan in County Westmeath was married to his sister Anne and acted as executor and
residuary legatee to his father. William became riding master at Dublin Castle in 1780 following the
death of his father and in 1810 had a lodgings allowance of 100 pounds per year He was a major in
the County of Dublin 22nd Light Dragoons of which Luke Gardiner was colonel.
He had a farm and house in Kilmacud in which he resided but he put it up For Let in 1783 for a
number of years. He was a member of the RDS, elected in 1812 and on the Vestry of Taney in 1816.
Broome Bridge which crosses the Royal Canal in Cabra was named after William, he being one of the
directors of the Royal Canal company. On the 12 Dec 1814, his house in Kilmacud was the scene of an
attempted robbery. A shot was fired and William tried to get downstairs to investigate, but was fired
at. The robbers made their escape and William discovered that his housekeeper, Hannah Brown had
been shot. Hannah was shot in the neck and died 18 Jan 1815 from the wound. Three men - Thomas
Markey, Thomas Griffin and Thomas Byrne were hanged for her murder. William died 13 Nov 1825
aged 86 and was buried at Stillorgan at Stillorgan graveyard.
1 Henry Broom born circa 1779 joined the 22nd regiment of the Light Dragoons and
attained the rank of Major. He saw service in the West Indies, Jamaica and India. He married
Carolina Louisa Nelthropp (of Denmark), daughter of Sir Henry George Nelthropp and
Carolina Illins at Bangalore, Madras on 19 Nov 1806. He was living at 43 Denzille Street when
he requested permission to succeed his father as riding master at Dublin Castle claiming that
his father had held the post for fifty years and his grandfather for a considerable number of
years before that. He died 20 May 1833 aged 54 at Fitzwilliam Street and was buried at
Stillorgan. Carolina was living at 18 Henrietta Street in Bath in 1840 and died 15 Apr 1876
aged 89 at Lewes, East Sussex.

Downs Evans only son of John Evans of Crom House, Wicklow on 04.11.1865 at
the Registrar’s Office, Dublin.

4 Emma Carolina Broome second daughter born 8 Jan 1812 at Madras married John
Hamilton Stewart of the 81st Regiment at St Peters Church, Dublin on 23 Nov 1835.
5 Georgina Augusta Broome third daughter born 5 Jun 1813 at Madras married George
Thorpe of Fitzwilliam Street, son of Captain Thorpe of the Queen’s Bays at St Peter’s
Church, Dublin on 16 Jan 1834. Georgina died at upper Clapton on 28 Aug 1835.
6 Eliza Broome born 12 Sep 1814 at Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, India. fourth daughter
married Edward Symons of Axbridge, Somerset and Wadham College, Oxon on
11 Dec 1834 at Clifton Church. Rev Edward Symons was born in Axbridge, Somerset,
the son of Thomas Symons. He was the vicar of Findon, Sussex and the Curate and
Vicar of St Mary The Virgin Church in Ringmer, Sussex from 1841 until his death in
1891. Eliza died 26 Jun 1887 at Ringmer, Lewes District, East Sussex.

7 Henry William Broome born 9 Oct 1817 in East India, graduated Trinity in 1835. Lieut
Henry Broome of the 30th Regiment and son of late Major Broome of 22nd Regiment
died in Paris November 1850.
8 Lewis George Francis born 11 Feb 1820 baptised at St Marks.
9 William Roche Broome born 1 Jun 1821 in Dublin baptised at St Marks joined the
Madras Infantry as a cadet in 1840. He attained the rank of Colonel in 1873. He
married Emily Hosmer Wahab, a widow and daughter of Robert Denis White at Madras
on 2 Jul 1849. William died by his own hand on 13 Sep 1873 at Bread Street, Brighton.
Emily died at Hove on 8 Jul 1905 aged 81.

1840. He married Katherine Elizabeth Leith, widow and daughter of James Malcolmson
of Campden Hill on 5 Jun 1862 at St Marys Abbotts, Kensington.
11 Jane Anna Broom youngest daughter born circa 1831 in India married Scipion Filippi De
Faby Comde de Tabj of Westbourne Place, Eaton Square London at St Gabriel’s, Pimlico
in April 1859. Scipion was a Colonel in the French Army and they settled in Guernsey after
the Franco Prussian War. He edited and was proprietor of The Gazette des lles de la
Manche which was constantly printing libellous statements. He ended up in prison in 1876
as he was unable to pay legal costs and fines imposed. On discharge he was ordered to
quit Guernsey and they moved to Jersey.
