John Brett was a Poor Law Guardian and land agent to the Nolan family of Sligo. He died
at Tubbercurry on 6 Sep 1844 and was buried at Achonry.
1 Jane Brett born circa 1803 married James Donohue. They had at least nine
children. Jane died at Ballyard, near Tubercurry on 18 Jun 1867 and was buried
at the old Abbey at Kilvarnet. Her brothers Henry and John attended her funeral.
1 Bartley Donohoe born circa 1825 at Ballyara, Tubercurry died in 1893.
2 James Donohoe born circa 1833 was Clerk of the Union and died in 1914.
3 Anne Donohoe born circa 1835 living with her brother James in 1911.
4 Patrick Donohoe born January 1837 at Tubbercurry. He lived at Corsallagh
and died in 1914.
2 Henry Brett born circa 1805 in Tubercurry was a civil engineer and married Mary
Harry circa 1834. He was employed in land improvements, under the Waste Land
Reclamation Company for Mayo and Sligo. He worked for Griffith's Survey of
Ireland and was appointed County Surveyor for King's County in 1836, Mayo in
1838 Waterford in 1849 and Wicklow in 1856. During his time in Wicklow he was
responsible for building Seskin bridge at Glen of Imaal, Enniskerry bridge and a
replacement bridge at Avoca in 1869. He founded Henry Brett & Sons in the early
1870's, a civil engineering practice with offices in Dame street. From here they
designed many branches for the National Bank. The family lived at Rosemount,
Booterstown from 1874 to 1894. Henry died at Rosemount on 13 May 1882 and
was buried at Deansgrange. He left 10K in personal estate. Mary died
22 May 1894 at Rosemount and was buried with her husband.
1 John Henry Brett born circa 1835 in Tubercurry, Co Sligo. He was a civil
engineer in partnership with his father and married Mary Josephine Brady
on 26 Apr 1876 at St Kevin’s Church, Harrington Street. Mary was the
second daughter of Dr James Brady of Harcourt Street. John was initially a
county surveyor for Limerick and then for Kildare from 1869 and surveyor
for Antrim from 1882 to 1901 where they lived. They had six children of
whom five survived in 1911. He resigned in 1915 and died on 26 Dec 1919.
He was survived by four sons and one daughter.
1 Maud Mary Brett born 26 Jan 1877 at Harcourt Street, Dublin was
unmarried and living with her parents in 1911.
2 Henry Brett was an interpreter and the commercial attaché to Honk
Hong.
3 J A Brett was a major and a deputy commissioner of Malaban NW
Frontier, India.
4 Raymond J Brett was a major and a magistrate for Donegal.
5 Francis J Brett was a major in the Royal Marine Light Infantry. He was
stationed at St Helena in 1919.
2 Anna Teresa (Nannie) Brett born circa 1838 died a spinster on 22 Nov 1891
at Rosemount and was buried at Deansgrange.
3 Jane Brett became a nun and entered the Sisters of Charity. Sister M
Gaulbert died at St Joseph’s Convent, Kilkenny on 29 Jan 1893.
4 George Brett third son born September 1841 at Castlebar died June 1849
from Scarlatina.
5 Harriett Brett born 17 Jul 1843 in Co Mayo acted as household manager for
her brother Henry at Wellington Road. She died unmarried on
20 Mar 1929 at 19 Wellington Road.
6 Frances Mary Brett born circa 1847 was a talented artist. She won
numerous awards during the 1860's and 1870's for her designs including
the gold medal presented by the RDS Art Society in 1869. She died a
spinster on 25 Feb 1896 at Wellington Road and was buried at Deansgrange.
7 James F Brett, second son born circa 1848 married Annie MacManus on
4 Jun 1877 at St Agnes’s Church. Annie was the daughter of the late John F
MacManus of Hollyvale Gowna, Co Cavan.
8 Henry Charles Brett born May 1849 in Co Mayo was a civil engineer and in
partnership with his father. He was head inspector Land Loan Dept of the
Office of Public Works and lived at Wellington Road. He died unmarried at
the Hospice in Harold’s Cross late of Wellington Road on 5 Jul 1926.
9 Joseph Patrick Brett born circa 1856 in Dublin City baptised 16 Oct 1856 at
Rathmines. He was resident at Rosemount from 1882 to 1894 and was a
practising barrister. He lived with his brother Henry after the death of his
mother. He died unmarried at 19 Wellington Road on 24 Jan 1910.
3 Patrick Brett born circa 1817 emigrated to America. He was in Boston by 1854.
He was secretary and a stockholder of Waterbury and Company and died on
26 Apr 1871 survived by his wife and five children.
4 John Brett born circa 1808 at Tubbercurry. He married Ellen Henery on 3 Nov 1842.
Ellen was the fourth daughter of William Henery of High Street, Sligo. Ellen died
1 Sep 1857 aged 43. John was land agent to the Phibbs estates and was appointed
a Poor Law Guardian in 1843. He died 9 May 1871 in Tubbercurry.
1 Mary Elizabeth Brett born February 1845 at High Street, Sligo died 25 Sep 1865
at Tubbercurry.
