1 Thomas Brett born circa 1821 was a Brick and Tile Merchant. He married Amelia
Byrne at the Pro Cathedral on 10 Jun 1848. He had offices at 21 Aughrim Street,
Broadstone in 1843. By 1859 he was selling slates, flooring tiles and flags with
premises also at Portobello and Baggot Bridge. He saved a young man called
M’Clean’s life in 1870 who he spotted falling into the canal near the Broadstone.
Thomas Brett was the executor of Roseanna M’Cullagh nee Byrne, Amelia’s sister
late of Aughrim Street, a widow who died 15 Jan 1876 aged 38 at Bellevue. He was
at 126 Aughrim Street in 1864 when he was the administrator of Michael Keegan
Will together with Denis Carton of Halston Street.
Thomas Brett, Broadstone, having collected twenty Repealers, was admitted a
member of the Loyal National Repeal Association. He bought a plot of land at
Palmerstown place in 1865 for £1900 which had houses and was leased to the
Midland Railway producing £200 income per year. He donated regularly to the
building of new churches in Dublin, and to the Artane Industrial School. Living at
37 Dominick Street in 1878.
Thomas died 15 Jan 1885 aged 64 at Bellevue, Dundrum and was buried at the
family burial ground at Drangan, Co Tipperary. After his death Amelia put
Bellevue’s lease and the household furniture up for sale She also sold the leases
for properties Thomas owned over Dublin, in Ranelagh, Rathgar and Leeson Park.
Amelia died 14 Feb 1883 aged 53 at 26 Palmestown Place, Dublin 7. The informant
was her niece Catherine Tyrrell of 27 Palmertown Place. Amelia died before the
Will could be administered and Agnes, Thomas's sister became the administrator
of the Will. Amelia administrators were Catherine (Kate) Tyrrell and Joseph Dale
of Georges Street.
He left 13k in personal estate, his wife Amelia was the executrix but she died
before she could administer the Will and it was 1883 before it was administered.
2 Agnes Brett married Denis Maher, a clerk and son of Laurence Maher, a farmer at
St Pauls, Arran Quay on 11 Oct 1864. She was living at 89 Ranelagh Road in 1885.
Possible baptism for Agnes in Cork to Michael Brett and Maria Dale on 24 Jul 1820
at St Finbarr’s. Agnes died at Steward’s Institution 3 May 1900 aged 83 and left over 2K.
Probate granted to Mrs Mary Keegan.
3 Denis Brett baptised 26 Nov 1818, was a tile and flag merchant. Late of 27 Palmerstown,
he died 13 Mar 1884 a bachelor at Stewards Institution, Palmerstown. He was buried at
the family burial ground at Drangan, Co Tipperary.
Catherine Keegan born circa 1843 was the daughter of Michael Keegan, a poulterer of Halston
Street and Mary Byrne (sister of Amelia). Thomas Brett failed to administer the Will and in 1885
Catherine Tyrrell, a widow and daughter of Michael Keegan was granted administration.
Catherine of Great Britain Street married Joseph Tyrrell, a hardware merchant of Caddiff Buildings,
Cabra on 4 Jul 1864. Joseph was a widower and 48 years her senior.
