Brangan of Bellevue, Cross Avenue
Thomas Brangan born circa 1809. He was of The Forest, Cloghran and married
Margaret Eliza Wood on 26 Jun 1843 at St Pauls. Margaret was the daughter of
Christopher Wood of Terenure. Witness’ John Ryan & James Whelan. Thomas had
64 acres of grazing land to let at Great Forest, six miles from Dublin in 1849 and in
1851 he was a salesmaster of Smithfield. He attended St Paul’s Arran Quay Church
and contributed to the Catholic University medical facility at Cecelia Street and St
Paul's Free Schools. T hey lived at 3 Victoria Terrace, Kingstown in the 1850’s, at
Pembroke Place in the 1860’s and at Bellevue, Cross Avenue from 1871 to 1881.
His partnership with John Bryson, of Queen Street trading as Brangan & Bryson was
dissolved in 1860 and Thomas continued the business as Thomas Brangan & Co. He
was a Cattle Salesmaster, Corn & Wool Broker of 68 Queen Street from 1870 to 1881.
Mary Anne died at Bellevue, Cross Avenue on 7 Oct 1875 aged 54 and was buried at
Glasnevin. His daughter Mary Clara and her husband moved in with him after Mary
Anne died. Thomas died 13 Nov 1891 at 139 Strand Road, Sandymount, late of 133
Strand Road, Kate Dolan the informant. He was buried at Glasnevin cemetery and
left 2K in personal estate. James O’Reilly the executor.
1 Mary Clara Brangan, only daughter married James Behan Murtagh on
19 Oct 1869 at Haddington Road Church. James was a merchant and the
eldest son of Michael Murtagh, merchant of Shrule, Co Longford. Witnesses
John C Murtagh & Margaret Cullen.
1 Brian Murtagh died aged 21 days on 27 Aug 1870 at 41 Belvidere Place.
