Benjamin Bradley a Timber Merchant of 15 Golden Lane in 1804 and of Marlfield House, Old Bawn in
Tallaght. According to W D Handcock in The History and Antiquities of Tallaght:-
Benjamin Bradley, father of the redoubtable Tom Bradley was by some people said to have held a portion of
the same fund. (fund held by Billy Humphreys, treasurer to the United Irishmen). Ben Bradley...lived at
Marlfield near Kiltipper. He use to ride an old white horse... This horse had a habit of coming to a dead-stop
when it chose... It was said that one night in a rage Ben shot his horse on the road, and afterwards wanted to
persuade people that he was fired at, and his horse maliciously killed.
1 Thomas Bradley born 04.06.1790 and had been involved with the commercial and monetary world
for around 50 years and had amassed an immense fortune. Thomas attracted wealthy men to a
new development on Longford Terrace in Monkstown. Thomas married Joanna Willis on
14.03.1818. Joanna died in March 1846. Again Handcock has some information.
Tom was as well known in Dublin as Nelson's Pillar. He dealt largely in money lending and bill
discounting; and there was a certain baulk, or log of timber, which was always part of the value given by
Tom to evade the usury laws.
Thomas secondly married Charlotte James 2nd daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Ralph James and
widow of James Waller on 11.12.1856 at St Peter’s Church. Thomas died intestate on 15.06.1862 at
Ruby Lodge in Blackrock with a personal estate of £160,000. He is buried in the Bradley vault at
Mount Jerome with the Flood family. There were numerous legal challenges to his estate. Charlotte
died on 12.03.1863 at Ruby Lodge and is also buried at Mount Jerome. After Charlotte's death the
legal challenges continued. It was claimed that Benjamin had four children by a second marriage to
Jane Kelly. These were William, Benjamin, Elizabeth Murphy and Mary Martin. This was disputed by
Olivia but it transpired that Tom had recognised these as his half siblings and they were each
awarded 15K.
2 Olivia Bradley only daughter born circa 1790 married John Wellesley Flood. John died circa 1825 as
Olivia had been a widow for 46 years when she died on 12.12.1871 aged 81 years and is buried at
Mount Jerome. She left 60K in personal estate. She never recognised her half siblings and the
memorial she erected on the family grave refers to Tom as her only brother.

Belgrave Square.

daughter of late Thomas W Smithson of Clororagh Cottage, Whitechurch on
25.11.1885 at Rathfarnham Church. William died on 15.09.1893 aged 31 years at his
residence Orchardstown House, Rathfarnham.
4 Annabella Marian Flood youngest daughter of Tritonville Road, Sandymount
married Charles Collier Cates 3rd son of John Cates MRCS of London on 05.12.1865
at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook.
1 Joanna (Annie) Letitia Cates only daughter married Robert H Cunningham of
Cookstown, Tyrone on 04.04.1888 at the Parish Church of St George,
Hardwicke Place, Dublin.
3 Frederick Leopold Flood 2nd son born 14.03.1818 a Solicitor of Carlton, Sandford Road
married Maria Moyers daughter of William Moyers of Richmond Street on 18.06.1842 at
St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Frederick died 06.09.1864 and is buried at Mount Jerome.
Thomas Moyers their uncle became the legal guardian of the three children. Maria died on
18.06.1900 aged 80 years at 18 Belgrave Road.
1 Joanna Kathleen Flood elder daughter married John William Lane RAMC only married
son of late John Lily Lane of 37 Lower Baggot Street and Clarahill on 10.06.1909 at
Christ Church, Leeson Park.

Emily died on 16.04.1885 aged 30 years at 65 Elizabeth Street, Liverpool.
Benjamin died of Typhoid Fever on 27.05.1894 aged 43 years at 11 Crofton Avenue
late of 69 Pembroke Road both are buried at Mount Jerome.

Frederick died on 05.06.1921 aged 63 years at 40 Morehampton Road.

Maryanne Isabella. Cedric died on 10.03.1952 aged 64 years at the S

Mount Jerome.
3 Gladys Ella Flood born 31.07.1888 at 63 Pembroke Road married Ernest
Duncan Caddell son of Lt Col Henry Caddell on 12.01.1909 at the Church of
St Peter, Dublin. They divorced in 1915. Gladys married Major Noel Ralph
Whitaker of HM Army shortly afterwards at Dover. Gladys died 12.04.1934 at
the Royal Halifax Hospital.
4 Joanna Olivia Flood born circa 1823 died unmarried on 27.03.1901 aged 78 years at Collegnes,
Booterstown. The informant was her nephew Frederick L Flood.
