Samuel Blackmore was born about 1822 in Brixham, Devon, England, to Samuel Blackmore and Sarah
Cawley and moved to Ringsend some time before 1847 when he married Susannah Snell, daughter of
James Snell, a sailor and Charlotte Lake at St Mary’s Church in Donnybrook on 24 Oct 1847. In 1849
Samuel found himself in prison at Kilmainham, Dublin, for illegally fishing with a trawl net. He and
Susannah went on to have a large family of at least 11 children. His eldest son George became a sea
captain, and 3 other sons became fishermen. Samuel died 9 Aug 1878 at 40 Thorncastle Street and
Susanna died 5 Jun 1905 at 4 Bayview Tce, Pigeon House Road.

St Mary’s, Donnybrook. Samuel and three other fishermen were before an Inquiry at Pembroke
in 1909 to defend the use of trammels and dragnets which was reported in the newspapers.
Samuel Blackmore, a skipper, of 45 Thorncastle Street, Ringsend, gave evidence. He said he had
45 years of experience as a fisherman. He believed the only place for successful fishing was about
the Kish Lighthouse. Occasionally he went into Skerries Bay, but fishing there was not profitable.
He spent the last two years in Galway and Donegal. Samuel died 17 Feb 1942 late of 18
Cambridge Ave at the Old Men’s aged 91.
