Bewley family of Summerville and Windsor Lodge, Booterstown
William Bewley born 18.03.1812 at Rockville son of Samuel Bewley and Elizabeth Fayle. He
married Dorothea Jacob daughter of Joshua Richard Jacob of Waterford on 13.02.1839 at the
Friends Meeting House, Monkstown. William died on 20.09.1884 aged 72 years at Illerton,
Killiney and Dorothea died on 30.11.1909 aged 88 years at 3 Willow Terrace, Blackrock.
1 Alfred Bewley eldest son born 25 Nov 1839 at Waltham Terrace. He married Caroline
Elizabeth Egan on 8 Feb 1865 at Taney Church. Caroline was the daughter of William
James Egan of Rockville, Dundrum.
2 Joshua Bewley born 12 Feb 1840 at Waltham Terrace. He married Clara Meyrick on
2 Oct 1878 at Trinity Church Killiney. Clara born in Lismore, Co Waterford was the
daughter of Samuel Henry Meyrick, Rector of Blessington and was resident at Laurel
Ville, Ballybrack. They lived at Summerville from 1880 to 1892. Joshua was a wine
merchant and died 25 Apr 1892 at Summerville and was buried at Deansgrange. They
had five children all of whom survived until 1911. Clara moved to Booterstown Avenue
and was a Professor of Vocal Music. Her sister Eleanor Meyrick came to live with her.
Clara died 14 Feb 1952 at Willow Lodge, Booterstown and was buried at Deansgrange
with her husband.
1 Alfred Charles Bewley born 23 Jul 1879 at Rose Cottage, Ballybrack was an accountant
and a director of public company, Messrs Walpole Bros. He married Madoline
Grandison on the 4 June 1910 at SS Philip and James. Madoline was the daughter of
Charles O Grandison and they were living at 24 Mount Merrion Avenue in 1911. Alfred
died 19 Mar 1922 and was buried with his father.
1 Phyllis Madoline Bewley only child born 16 Mar 1915 at 24 Mount Merrion Avenue
attended the Girls Masonic School in Ballsbridge. She married Russell Mills on
26 Feb 1939 at SS Philip and James, Booterstown. Russell was an architect and the
son of George Mills, a merchant.
2 Christina Mary Bewley born 19 Oct 1880 at Summerville attended Alexandra College. She
was a teacher and Honorary Secretary, Central Association of Irish School Mistresses in
1936. She was principal of Rochelle and Cork Grammar School in 1920 and in 1927 was
appointed principal at Alexandra School. She retired in 1947 and died a spinster on
13 Jul 1964 at 4 Frankfort Park, Dundrum.
3 Dorothy Clara Bewley born 9 Oct 1882 at Summerville was a professor of music by 1911.
She married Cecil Watson on 6 Jul 1915 at SS Philip and James. Cecil was resident at Grove
Park in London and the son of William Tyndale Watson, MD.
4 Winifred Agatha Bewley born 4 Mar 1884 at Summerville attended the Metropolitan
School of Art. She died a spinster on 16 Dec 1958 at 11 Brighton Road Rathgar late of
Windsor Lodge and was buried with her parents. After her death Willow Lodge in
Booterstown was put up for sale.
5 Harold de Beauvoir Bewley born 26 May 1886 at Summerville attended Avoca School and
Oswestry Grammar School. He graduated Trinity and joined the civil service. He enlisted in
1914 and served with the Nigerian Regiment Force West African Field Force. He spent most
of his life in Nigeria working as a civil servant. He married Phyllis Frances Cowdy at Moy
Methodist Church in April 1928. Phyllis was the eldest daughter of Edward Cowdy of
Summer Island, Loughgall. The couple had two children. Phyllis died 19 May 1957 at
Hainault Park, Foxrock, her funeral service was held at All Saint’s Church, Blackrock and she
was buried at Deansgrange. Harold died 3 Dec 1972 at Tivoli Road Nursing Home and was
buried with his wife.
3 Mary Bewley born 11 Aug 1842 at Waltham Terrace. Mary married John W Ackroyd from
Scarborough on 4 Apr 1984 at Clapham.
4 Isabella Bewley born 8 Sep 1844 at Waltham Terrace. She married William Tyndall Watson, a
surgeon of West Green, Tottenham at Monkstown Church on 26 Apr 1866.
5 Emily Bewley born 31 May 1846 at Appian Way. She died unmarried at 3 Willow Terrace
on 13 Sept 1933, her sister Florence the informant. She is buried at Deansgrange.
6 Charlotte Bewley born 23 Apr 1848 at Appian Way.
7 Elizabeth Dorothea Bewley born 12 Dec 1849 at Appian Way. She married Charles Edward
Graham Harvey on 12 Jul 1899 at SS Philip & James, Booterstown. Charles was a QC of
Peafield, Blackrock.
8 Anna Bewley born 27 May 1852 at Appian Way living at 3 Willow Terrace in 1911. Anna
died unmarried on 10 Oct 1925 at the Ivanhoe nursing home and is buried at
Deansgrange.
9 Florence Bewley born 27 Apr 1856 at Appian Way died unmarried at 3 Willow Terrace
on 7 May 1958 having reached the age of 102. She is buried at Deansgrange.
10 William Bewley born 22 Oct 1858 at Appian Way was a wine merchant living at 3 Willow
Terrace in 1911. He died unmarried on 9 Mar 1922 at Willow Terrace and is buried at
Deansgrange.
