James was the second son of Henry Hughes, a merchant and Bridget O’Farrell of Aughadeginan, Co
Longford. James matriculated in 1794 and was a bonded solicitor in 1801. He married Margaret
Morton daughter of Trevor Stannus Morton, an attorney of Golden Lane and Rehoboth, Dolphins
Barn. James a solicitor and agent to the commission, of 99 Capel Street in 1808 moved to 100 Capel
Street in 1817. He died at Capel Street on 26 Jan 1838. Margaret died 6 Dec 1871 at Belgrave Square,
Monkstown and was buried at Glasnevin.
1 Henry George Hughes born 23 Aug 1812 in Dublin was educated by Mr MacShean and
attended Trinity College. He was called to the bar in 1834. He published a treatise entitled
Practice at the Court of Chancery in 1837. He married Sarah Isabella l'Estrange, daughter of
Major Francis l'Estrange on 24 Apr 1835 at St Mary’s Church, Dublin and brought up their
children in the Church of Ireland faith but both their daughters married Roman Catholics.
Henry took silk in 1844 and in 1850 was appointed Solicitor General for Ireland in Lord John
Russell's government. In July 1859 he was appointed Baron of the Exchequer. They lived at
St Leonards from 1858 to 1860 then moved to 12 Longford-terrace, Monkstown which was
burnt down in 1861 and then moved to no 25. They had lands at Gowna in Longford. Henry
died at Marine Terrace Bray on 22 Jul 1872, his brother James in attendance. He was buried
at Deansgrange and the breast plate on the coffin gave his date of birth as being 10 Aug 1810.*
He left 8K in personal estate. Sarah died aged 79 on 17 Dec 1894 at 24 Fitzwilliam Place, the
home of her daughter Margaret.
1 Anna Maria Hughes, eldest daughter born circa 1841 married Michael Morris on
18 Sep 1860 at Killiney Church of Ireland. They were married later that day at Victoria
Castle by special dispensation by Rev John Harold, parish priest of Killiney. Michael
was Recorder of Galway and the son of Martin Morris. He was later Lord Chief Justice
of Ireland and elevated to the peerage, in the dignity of Baron Killanin. They had
thirteen children. Michael died 8 Sep 1901 aged 73 at Spiddal and left 128K in
personal estate. Anna died at Ballinaboy, Galway on 17 Oct 1906 and was interred in
the Morris Vault at New Cemetery Galway with her husband.
2 Margaret Hughes born circa 1854 in Dublin married Edward Fitzgerald, solicitor circa
1877. They lived at Fitzwilliam Place and later at Kyber Pass, Sorento Terrace. They
had eleven children. Edward died 27 Oct 1913.
2 John Trevor Hughes second son born circa 1812 in Dublin. He was in practice with his father
and died from consumption on 14 Dec 1834.
3 James Stannus Hughes born circa 20 Jul 1812 at Capel Street. Graduated in medicine in 1840,
from Glasgow University and living at 100 Capel Street in 1842. The Lord Lieutenant appointed
him Surgeon in Ordinary to his Excellency in 1855. He was appointed Professor of Surgery in the
Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1863. He was Vice-President of the Dublin Pathological
Society, Surgeon to Jervis Street Hospital and Consulting Surgeon to The Coombe Lying-In
Hospital. He married Margaret Juliette Blake, daughter of Walter Blake, of Meelick, Co Galway on
8 Jul 1858 and they lived at Westland Row. Margaret died 1 Jun 1863 aged 24. James was visiting
doctor to the Convalescent Home in Stillorgan and died at Merrion Square on 1 Jun 1884 and was
interred in Glasnevin Cemetery. Probate was to Miss Mary Hughes, spinster of 95 Merrion Square.
1 Henry George Hughes died an infant on 21 Dec 1859 at Dalyston, Galway.
4 Charles George Hughes born circa 1813 was educated by Thomas Finn at the Jervis Street
Seminary. He entered Trinity in 1829 and was articled to his father in 1835 and took over the
practice on the death of his father in 1838. He moved the practice to 104 Capel Street in 1845.
Charles of the Chancery Registrar's Office died at his residence No 5 Lower Dorset Street,
Drumcondra on 22 Feb 1849.
5 Edward Hughes baptised at the Pro Cathedral on 1 May 1816.
6 Eliza Louisa Hughes, eldest daughter died 1 Aug 1829.
7 Margaret Louisa Hughes married Thomas John Gibbings at the C of I Church in Monkstown on
3 Aug 1847. Thomas was a solicitor of 81 Talbot Street and the third son of Bartholomew Gibbings
of Gibbing’s Grove, Cork. They moved to 2 Upper Temple Street in 1850. Thomas died on
3 Feb 1853 at Woodville, Fermoy. Margaret secondly married David Fitzpatrick of Fitzwilliam
Square at St Michael’s Church, Kingstown on 1 Feb 1858.
8 Rachel Hughes baptised at the Pro Cathedral on 16 April 1821 died unmarried at 30 Corrig
Avenue, Kingstown on 21 Dec 1866 and was buried at Glasnevin.
9 Henrietta Maria Hughes, youngest daughter died in July 1848 at Longfield, Cashel, the seat of
Charles Bianconi.
10 Francis Browne Hughes born circa 1826 died 18 Dec 1833.
* His date of birth given in King’s Inns as 23 Aug 1812 but baptised 3 Sep 1810 at the Pro Cathedral.
