James Baird born circa 1850 at Co Monaghan son of Alexander Baird, a farmer. James was
a gardener at Elm Park and married Letitia Annett on 3 Aug 1880 at White Church Co
Dublin. Letitia was the daughter of William Annett, originally from Maghery, Co Down and
a steward living at Marlay Lodge. The family lived at St Brigids from 1901 to 1905. James
died at St Brigid’s Lodge, Roebuck on the 25 Apr 1905 and was buried at Deansgrange.
by 1911 Letitia was living at Beechwood Avenue Lower. Her sister Sarah was also living
with the family. Leticia died at 14 Glenarm Avenue, Drumcondra on 4 Feb 1924 and was
buried with her husband.
1 William Alexander Baird born 23 Feb 1882 at 53 Patrick Street, Kingstown. He was
a shipping clerk in 1911 and later an insurance clerk and gardener. He was living
at 3 Lower Beechwood and married Esther Geraghty on 5 Jun 1912 at Clontarf
Parish Church. Esther was the daughter of John Geraghty, a farmer and she was
resident at Brian Boru Road, Clontarf. They were living at Annavilla, Ranelagh in
1912 and later moved to 92 New Grange Road. William died 11 Apr 1955 at the
Adelaide Hospital late of 92 New Grange Road, Cabra.
1 Sarah Anetta Baird born 1 Sep 1912 at the Rotunda Hospital. She was a
clerk and died 4 Aug 1931 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital late of 92 New
Grange Road, Cabra. She was buried at Deansgrange.
2 Elizabeth Baird born 4 Jun 1914 married John McCann on 29 Dec 1943 at S
St James’ Church, Dublin. John was a soldier and the son of Thomas McCann,
an upholsterer.
3 James Baird born 25 Feb 1916 at 12 St James’ Terrace, Clonskea.
4 Mabel Letitia (Letitia) Baird born 20 Oct 1918 at 12 St James’ Terrace,
Clonskea married William John Russell Simpson at Abbey Street Methodist
Church on 9 Aug 1939. William was a port missionary and the son of
George Simpson.
5 Frank Robert Baird born circa 1920 was a salesman. He was also a racing
cyclist with Harps Cycling Club. In 1939 he won five championships in Ireland
and thought of turning pro but with war looming he missed his opportunity.
He won the Irish National Cycling Championships in 1942 and 1947. He
married Therese (Terry) Murphy on 4 Sep 1944 at Dolphins Barn Church.
Terry was living at O’Curry Avenue, SCR and was the daughter of William
Murphy, a bricklayer. She was an Irish Dance champion and a Tailteann
Games Irish dancing champion. Frank represented Ireland at the 1948
Olympics held in London. They had five children and lived at Moyne Road,
Drimnagh and later at the Navan Road. In the 1950’s he was still competing
and wrote a series of columns for the Irish Independent on his career. He
also ran cycling courses.
6 Douglas (Duggy) Baird was a member of the Donore Harriers. He was living
at Bodley Street, Walworth London in 1955.
2 Robert Henry Baird born 27 Sep 1883 at Highthorn Lodge, Kingstown. Robert was an
insurance inspector living with his mother in 1911. He was living at 14 Glenarm
Avenue in 1924 with his mother.
3 David Baird born 13 Jun 1888 at 6 Upper Mountown. David was a grocers assistant
living with his mother in 1911. He enlisted and served with the Machine Gun Service
of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers and was wounded in action. He was an accomplished cross
country runner and trained with the Donore Harriers. In 1920, 1921 and 1937 he won
the Waterhouse-Byrne Shield which was then renamed the Waterhouse-Byrne-Baird
Shield. He celebrated his 54th birthday by winning a race from Nelsons Pillar to
Milltown. David married and they lived at Glenarm Avenue in Drumcondra with their
three sons.
4 John Baird born 21 Apr 1891 at 6 Upper Mountown. He was a boot salesman living with
his mother in 1911. He enlisted and served as a trooper with the North Irish Horse. He
was wounded in action in 1916. He married Kathleen Little on 29 Oct 1941 at the Star
of the Sea Church, Sandymount. Kathleen was the daugher of Thomas W Little of
Castlewood Avenue, Rathmines. They lived at Castlewood Avenue where John died on
13 Nov 1964. He was buried at Deansgrange.
5 James Annett Baird youngest son born 17 Jun 1893 at 6 Upper Mountown was a
shipping clerk working with Messrs Eckford on City Quay and living with his mother in
1911. He enlisted and served with the Machine Gun section of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers,
'A Company, 10th Battalion. He was killed in action on 13 Nov 1916 while serving with
the Naval Division. He is remembered at the Y Ravine Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel and
was buried in France.
