Charles Hervey Bagot of Brookfield, Mount Merrion Avenue
Christopher Michael Bagot born circa 1817 son of Charles Hervey Bagot "Captain Bagot" (an
Irish born South Australian sheep farmer, copper mine owner and parliamentarian) and his
wife Mary MacCarthy. He married Margaret Elizabeth Watts eldest daughter of John Cliffe Watts
on 6 Aug 1846 at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide. Christopher died at Koonunga on 8 Nov 1853
and Margaret died at Nurney House, Stanley Street, North Adelaide on 6 Nov 1910.
1 Charles Hervey Bagot eldest son born 18 May 1847 at Koonunga in South Australia.
He obtained a commission in 1868 and saw active service in the Kurram Valley during
the Afghan war. He married Laura Mildred Daniel on 22 July 1874, at St Saviour's, St
George's Square, Pimlico in London, moved to India. Laura died 15 Aug 1879 in India.
Charles became a captain in 1880 and served with the Bechuanaland Expeditionary
Force in 1884/5.
1 Beatrice Bagot born 11 Aug 1876 born at Roorkee, India. As grandniece she was
adopted by Sir Charles Samuel Bagot of East Sheen. She married Arthur Lawford
Wigan on 29 Jul 1896 at East Sheen, Richmond Surrey. Arthur was the son of Sir
Frederick Wigan of Clare Lawn in East Sheen and his wife Mary Harriett Blunt.
They lived at Sunningdale. Arthur died on 26 Aug 1944 aged 76 at Forrest Park,
Windsor and Beatrice died 4 Sep 1959 at Windsor.

2 Cicely Margaret Bagot born 22 Jan 1878 at Roorkee, Bengal. As grandniece she
was adopted by Sir Charles Samuel Bagot of East Sheen. She married Edgar Clare
Wigan at Christchurch, East Sheen on 2 Feb 1909. Edgar was a merchant and the
son of Sir Frederick Wigan of Clare Lawn, Mortlake and his wife Mary Harriet Blunt.
Cicely died 14 Oct 1960 in Surrey and Edgar died in 1980.

Charles based at the Curragh Camp secondly married Alice Law at Ballygar Parish Church,
Kildare on 14 Sep 1886. Ann born in Ballysax was the daughter of Robert Law of Newpark.
He was with the Royal Engineers in 1887 he had attained rank of Major and Lieut Colonel
in 1894. He visited his Uncle Charles Samuel Baggot of The Gables, Richmond Park,
Surrey in 1891 with his two daughters, Cicely and Beatrice. His daughters were later
adopted by his uncle and his uncle’s wife Lucy Francesca Hornby. They lived at Brookfield
from1896 to 1899.
Charles was appointed Colonel in 1899 and received the Companion of the Order of the
Bath in 1900. He was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Fortifications and moved
to England. In 1901 the family were living at 4, Cambalt Road, Putney, Wandsworth.
Charles retired in 1904 and died 7 Nov 1911 at Brook Cottage, East Grinstead. He left 4K
in personal estate. Ann and her daughters were living at Westfields, East Grinstead in 1914.
4 Avice Bagot born 9 Jul 1887 in Halifax, Nova Scotia single worked as a VAD with the
Red Cross at Brewery House Hospital, East Grinstead during from 1915 to 1918
and later worked as a massage therapist. She married Rev Noel Eustace Hope on
14 Apr 1926 at Grinstead Parish Church and lived at Chedworth Vicarage,
Chedworth, Northleach. Avice died 24 Dec 1941 at Chedworth and left 5K in
personal estate.

5 Dorothy Lilian Bagot born 28 Nov 1888 in Halifax, Nova Scotia single in 1891 living
with her sister Avice in 1939 at Chedworth Vicarage, Chedworth, Northleach. She
wrote a hymn in 1935 and died a spinster on 1 Apr 1940 at left 3K in personal estate.
6 Mildred Emily Bagot born 15 Apr 1898 at Brookfield, Mount Merrion Avenue,
Blackrock. She was engaged to J N Law in 1917 but unmarried and living with her
sister Avice in 1939 at Chedworth Vicarage, Chedworth, Northleach. She was
president of both the East Grinstead British Legion and the Kingscote Women's
Institute. She died a spinster on 22 May 1988 at East Grinstead and left 482K in
personal estate.
7 Maurice John Hervey Bagot born 18 Oct 1891 at Woodhurst, Orwell Road. He served
on the HMS Monmouth as a Lieutenant, Royal Navy and was lost on 1 Nov 1914 in a
naval fight at Coronel off the coast of Chili. He is remembered on the Plymouth
memorial and at East Grinstead Church.
