Thomas Andrews, brewer of the lower Coombe, Dublin and son of Thomas and Hannah Andrews
married Penelope Kirkpatrick, daughter of Alexander Kirkpatrick, a merchant of Ushers Quay and
Drumcondra in December 1774 at St Audeon’s. His father Thomas, also a brewer died at his
residence on Ranelagh Road in September 1780. He was an alderman and elected High Sheriff in
1780. They lived in the Coombe from 1783 to 1795 and also had a house in Drumcondra. Thomas
was a director of the Dublin Insurance Company against Fire and had an interest in the oil mills in
Milltown. The couple had at least ten children.
Thomas was Lord Mayor of Dublin 1798/9. Penelope died 25 Dec 1814 at Merrion Square and was
buried at the Capuchin Burying Ground In the Parish of St Luke and St Kevins. Thomas died at his
house in Merrion Square in 1817 and was buried in the parish of St Nicholas Without.
1 Miss Andrews, eldest daughter died at Bordeaux on her way to the South of France in October
1802.
2 Ann Andrews, second daughter married Thomas Holmes circa 1802.
3 Hannah Andrews mentioned in her father's Will.
4 Alexander Andrews born eldest son born circa 1781. He joined the army and attained the rank of
captain with the 60th Regiment of foot, 95th Rifles (Green Jackets) and fought in the Peninsular
wars, he was awarded a clasp for Talavera. By 1814 he had 8 clasps. He was on half pay by 1825
and was retired by 1843. He married Catherine Margaret Rynd, second daughter of James Rynd
and Hester Fleetwood of Ryndville, Co Meath at Rathcore, Co Meath on 25 Jul 1816. He was
appointed a magistrate for King’s County in 1827. He lived at Screggen House, Tullamore which
was a little way off the Road to Birr and registered it as freehold in 1830 . They lived at Littleton
Stillorgan from 1843 to 1858. Alexander died at Tullamore 9 Mar 1869 aged 88. Catherine died
at Kyle, Co Wexford, the home of her son William on 8 Apr 1872 aged 75. Screggen House
burned down in June 1905, the occupants, the Briscoes managed to escape.
1 Penelope Andrews born 20 Oct 1819 married Rev Edward Fleetwood Berry of Tullamore
on 29 Mar 1843 at Stillorgan Parish Church. Edward was appointed Archdeacon of
Meath in 1872 and died 29 Apr 1875 at Trim aged 58. Penelope, a widow died from
Influenza on 14 Jan 1892 at Fermoy College aged 72. She was buried at Eglish in the
King’s County. Her son Thomas was her executor.
1 Robert Alexander Berry, eldest son born 24 Nov 1845 at Tullamore died 6 Nov 1864
aged 18 at the Rectory, Athlone.
2 Edward Nathaniel Berry born 20 Jan 1847 baptised at Tullamore was a member of
the Hibernian Bible Society. He died 4 Jun 1869 in South Dublin.
3 Thomas William Berry third son born Kings County 30 Jan 1850, baptised at
Tullamore. Thomas was Manager, of the Kingstown Branch of the National Bank
and was living at 27 Adelaide Street, Kingstown in 1892. He married Charlotte
Eleanor Atkinson, daughter of Adam Atkinson, of Lorbottle Hall, Northumberland
at St Mary’s, Cheltenham on 24 Mar 1883. Charlotte died at 1 Gresham Terrace
aged 39 on 23 Jul 1900. Thomas died 2 Apr 1910 at his residence 5 Ballgimen
Avenue, Kingstown. They are buried at Deansgrange.
4 Penelope Berry only daughter born 26 Dec 1851 baptised at Tullamore, died
10 Feb 1890 at Fermoy College, the residence of her brother.
5 Francis Charles Berry born 7 Feb 1854, baptised at Tullamore took Holy orders and
was Rector of Eagle Head, Nova Scotia in 1898.
6 John Berry born 16 Apr 1856, baptised at Tullamore graduated Trinity and took
Holy Orders. He married Jane Wilson, youngest daughter of Rev Robert Wilson, DD
of Belfast on 7 Sep at Trinity Church, Rathmines. John was headmaster of Fermoy
College and an Honorary Minor Canon of Ross. Jane died 25 Jun 1887 and John
resigned from Fermoy College in 1892 and left teaching. He took an appointment in
the Church of England. He secondly married Thomasina Annie Hornby at St
Thomas’s, York on 13 Jul 1893. In 1895 he accepted an appointment to Amherstburg,
Ontario, Canada.
7 James Fleetwood Berry born 23 Sep 1859, baptised at Tullamore, graduated Trinity
College and took Holy orders. He married Mary Emily Chatterton on 2 Mar 1887 at
Christ Church Leeson Street. Mary was born in Monkstown and was the daughter of
Abraham T Chatterton of Clyde Road. James was rectory of Calry in Sligo and a Chaplin
to the forces before accepting the appointment to St Nicholas’ Galway in 1890. He died
2 Jul 1925 outside St Mary’s Cathedral in Tuam. Mary lived at Kilgarran, Enniskerry, Co
Wicklow after the death of her husband.
1 Edward Fleetwood Berry, only child born 23 May 1888 in Sligo received his
commission in the Wiltshire Regiment and two years later joined the 9th
Gurkas Rifles in 1915. He attained the rank of Captain in 1912 and was ADC to
Lord Carmichael, Governor of Bengal. He was appointed Adjutant of the 9th
Gurkas in 1915. He died of wounds on 17 Apr 1916. He is commemorated at
the Basra Memorial in Iraq. He left all of his personal effects to his parents with
the exception of a ring which he left to Miss Dora Sevening of Marlborough Road,
St John’s Wood. He was awarded the Military Cross.
2 William Andrews, Vicar Choral of St Canice’s Cathedral in 1856. He married Hannah Letitia
Despard, daughter of the late Rev J W Despard of Killaghy Castle, Co Tipperary, Rector of
Fertagh, Kilkenny and granddaughter of the late General Robert Crawford on 30 Mar 1859
at St Peter’s Church Dublin. In 1869 he was promoted to the Vicarage of Kilpatrick, Ferns.
Hannah died a widow at 30 Eccles Street on 31 Jan 1912.

2 William Handy Andrews born 24 Feb 1871 at Killurin, Wexford.
3 Francis Alexander Andrews, third son born circa 1826. A gentleman cadet, he made ensign
without purchase with the 48th Foot, on 27 May 1842. He was promoted from Ensign to
Lieutenant on 19 Dec 1845 and transferred from the 48th to the 60th Rifles as Lieutenant.
He attained the rank of Captain and was killed 30 May 1857 in an explosion of an
ammunition waggon. He died a bachelor on the River Hindon, Ghazee-od-deen Nuggar, late
of Meerut in the East Indies. His father was his executor. His medals are currently for sale
(April 2021) for 5K Stg.
5 Elizabeth Andrews married William Sanders of Sanders Park, Cork in 1806. William died in 1820 at
Sanders Park and Elizabeth died 6 Apr 1822 at Toulouse, France.
1 Francis Alexander Sanders took Holy orders. He married Frances Cooper, daughter of Robert
Cooper of Lower Baggot Street on 25 May 1848 at St Peter's Church, Dublin.
6 Francis Andrews, second son born circa 1790 was a captain in the 45th Regiment and fought in the
Penisular wars. He married Henrietta Willis Clark only daughter of W Clarke of Bristol at Clifton Church
near Bristol on 4 Jan 1825. He attained the rank of major and died at Clifton on 8 Sep 1862 aged 72.
5 Thomas Andrews late an officer of the 62nd Regiment of Foot, volunteered with the Yeomanry
to quell an attack by rebels on the Coombe in 1803.
8 Robert Andrews joned the army and attained the rank of captain with the 19th Regment. He died
20 Sep 1854 at the Battle of the Alma during the Crimean war.
9 Penelope Andrews youngest daughter born 25 Feb 1793 married Frederick Darley, second son of
Alderman Frederick Darley on 8 Jul 1824. Frederick Darley was an Architect and responsible for
completing the erection of the Curvilinear Range of glass houses at the botanical gardens in Glasnevin.
No issue has been found. Penelope died 7 May 1886 at Killeherderry Rectory, Cavan, the house of her
nephew, the Rev Francis Alexander Sanders.
