Matthew Anderson born circa 1803 married Mary Lee on 19 Oct 1829. Mary was the
eldest daughter of Samuel Lee, a merchant of Derry. Matthew Anderson attorney of
Anderson and Lee, solicitors of 2 Inn’s Quays, Dublin. They lived at Roebuck House (now
Roebuck Court) from 1856 to 1863. He was appointed Crown Solicitor in 1859 and had
offices at Mountjoy Square and later at Fitzwilliam square. Roebuck was for sale in 1863
through the landed estate court and the house on 28 acres was bought on behalf of Mr
Perry by Mr Anderson, solicitor. Martin resigned as crown solicitor in 1884 and died
11 Oct 1888 at Knapton House, Kingstown. His grandson J Barcroft Anderson the
informant.
1 John K Anderson eldest son born circa 1834 died 7 Jun 1840 at Mountjoy Square.
2 Matthew born circa 1835 was educated at Boulogne-sur-mere. He was living at
Roebuck in 1856 and was an apprentice to his father Matthew Anderson, solicitor
of Inn’s Quay. His practice was at 11 Suffolk Street and he was the owner of canal
boats, carrier and coal merch and was bankrupt in 1863. He married Marian
Wilhelmina Quigley at the Mariners Church on 30 Mar 1872. Marian was the
daughter of Dr Thomas H Quigley. Matthew died 12 May 1876 late of 2 Royal
Terrace East, Kingstown. Probate was granted to his father. Marian died
3 Jul 1926 at Royal Terrace, Kingstown aged 89.
3 Samuel Lee Anderson born 14 Jun 1837 was educated at Rugby in England and at
Trinity, Dublin. He married Elizabeth Barcroft on 22 Sep 1863 at Dungannon.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Barcroft of Strangmore Lodge, Dungannon,
Co Tyrone. He worked on anti-Fenian and criminal cases in Ireland. He was
appointed crown solicitor for Waterford and Kilkenny in 1868 and was called to the
bar in 1877. He discharged almost all the duties of his father as crown solicitor for
Dublin. He was connected with the crimes department of Dublin Castle and worked
on Fenian and state trials until the conviction of the Irish National Invincibles in
1882. He retired and was knighted in 1884. He died 1 Dec 1886 at Knapton House
and was buried at Mount Jerome. Elizabeth died in on 25 Sep 1909 late of Baggot
Street and left 6K in person estate.
1 Joseph Barcroft Anderson only son born 31 Aug 1864 at 63 Fitzwilliam
Square graduated Trinity College and was called to the Irish Bar in 1885.
Joseph died a bachelor on 10 Jan 1948 at 74 Lower Baggot Street.
2 Mary Elizabeth Anderson born 19 Nov 1865 at Fitzwilliam Square. She was
unmarried and living with her mother in 1901.
3 Annie Edith Anderson born 29 Dec 1869 at 74 Baggot Street. She was
unmarried and living with her mother in 1901.
3 Martha Maria Anderson born circa 1840 living at Merrion Square in 1901. She
died unmarried on 20 Aug 1910 at 87 Merrion Square. Her nephew W Herbert
Boyd the informant.
4 Robert Anderson third son born 29 May 1841 at Mountjoy Square. He was
educated at Boulogne, Paris and at Trinity and worked for Findlater & Co, brewers as
a clerk. He was admitted Kings Inns and became involved in the operations against
Fenians attached to the crimes department of Dublin Castle. He moved to London in
1868. He married Agnes Alexandrina Moore on 4 Mar 1873 at St Mary’s Abbot’s,
Kensington. Agnes was the eldest and only surviving daughter of Ponsonby Arthur
Moore of Ballyhale, Co Kilkenny. Her brother later became the 9th Earl of Drogheda.
They had three sons and one daughter. He was living at 39 Linden Gardens,
Bayswater, Middlesex in 1886 and was Commissioner of Police. He was head of CID,
New Scotland Yard from 1888 to 1901 and knighted following his retirement. Sir
Robert died 15 Nov 1918 in London.
5 Anna Catherine Riddal Anderson second daughter born circa 1843 married Walter
Boyd on 4 Sep 1862 at The Scott’s Church in Capel Street. Walter was a barrister and
the son of Walter Boyd. They had six children and lived at Howth House. Their son
Walter Herbert Boyd designed the Howth 17th Footer, now the oldest one-design
keelboat racing class in the world. Walter was later an Irish judge and a member of
the Privy Council of Ireland. He retired in 1916 and was created a Baronet. Walter
Boyd, 1st Baronet died on 25 Jun 1918 at Howth House and was buried at Mount
Jerome. Annie died at Merrion Square on 12 Jan 1920 and was buried with her
husband.
6 Fanny Lee Anderson born circa 1845 was unmarried and living with her sister Martha
in 1901. She was living with her brother in law Walter Boyd and his family in 1911.
