Henry Edmund Anderson born circa 1817 son of William and Anne Anderson, a fruiterer
of 33 College Green. He father died in 1835 and Henry and his mother took over the
business. He expanded the stock to include liqueurs, confectionery, pickles and spices.
He married Sarah Hennessy of Baggot Court on 09.12.1838 at St Peter's Church. By 1842
he obtained a liquor licence for the premises and was trading as The National Reading,
Wine & Cigar Rooms. By 1849 he was the sole proprietor of the Royal Arcade Hotel and
Tavern at 33 College Green/4-5 Suffolk Street. He leased the hotel to his manager -
Christopher Spadaccini in 1851.
Henry, a widower of 6 Church Lane secondly married Georgina Kearney of 69 Amiens
Street on 01.10.1851 at St Thomas' Church, Dublin. Georgina was the forth daughter of
the late Joshua Kearney, carver and gilder of Henry Street. Henry also had a omnibus
service with over 120 horses which he disposed of the same year and continued to
trade in horses using Edward Dycer of the Horse Bazaar at Stephen's Green as an agent.
They had a falling out and sued each other in 1854 which resulted in stalemate as the
jury found for both plaintiff and defendant. Later that year he set up The Royal Horse
Bazaar at 94/95 Stephen's Green in direct competition to Dycers. He sold it on,
remaining on as an auctioneer, and opened the Royal Hibernian Horse Repository in
Mary Street. He took over Dycers also in 1861. They lived at 45 Bushfield Avenue,
Marlborough Road, Donnybrook from the 1870s and Henry had offices at 198 Great
Brunswick Street. By 1885 he was noted as the owner of the Royal Arcade Hotel and
had the license transferred back into his own name. In 1886 Henry's estate was put
up for sale through the land court. It was purchased for £700 by William Keating Clay
in trust for Georgina Anderson. Henry died at 9 Annesley Park, Ranelagh circa 1886*.
Georgina died 27.12.1888 aged 70 at 4 Church Avenue, Rathmines. She left £47 in
personal estate and her executor was William Keating Clay, a creditor. The informant
of both their deaths was J Kearney of Cherbury, Booterstown.
1 Georgina Caroline Anderson born 05.06.1852 at Mount Anville baptised at Taney
Church and died of TB on 23.11.1881 aged 29 years at St Patrick’s Hospital.
2 Anne Elizabeth Anderson born 29.12.1853 at Beverston baptised at Taney Church.
3 Henry Edmund Anderson born 18.06.1855 at Deverter (most likely Beverston)
baptised at Taney Church. He was found insensible on 08.09.1881 aged 26 years
at Percy Lane off Percy Place. He was brought to Baggot Street Hospital where
he was pronounced dead.
3 Isabella Florence Anderson third daughter born 18.12.1856 at Beverston baptised
at Taney Church. She died of TB aged 14 years on 28.03.1871 at 45 Bushfield
Avenue, Donnybrook. She was buried in the family vault at Drumcondra.
4 Josephine Anderson born 20.03.1858 at Beverston baptised at Taney Church.
