Anderson of Stanford House.
William Anderson born 30 Dec 1838 in Ormond Quay, Dublin city to William Anderson,
a gilder and his wife Ellen. He was resident at Trintonville Road in Sandymount and
married Catherine (Katie) Nolan at the Pro Cathedral on 12 Jan 1870. Katie was the
second daughter of John Nolan, a builder of Upper Buckingham Street, Dublin. He was
secretary and manager of Dublin United Tramway company and later the managing
director. He had a residence at Sackville Street. He was a JP and was vice president of
the Chamber of commerce and was also a director of the Hibernian Bank. He was a
member of the RDS and they lived at 7 Park Avenue, Sydney Parade before moving to
Glenavon, Merrion Road, Dublin in 1886. Kate died at the Imperial Hotel Lisdoonvarna
on 23 Jul 1902 aged 55 and was buried at Glasnevin. William died 31 Aug 1910 at
Glenavon and left 14K in personal estate. His remains were interred at Glasnevin. 350
tramway employees marched with the hearse.
1 William Henry Anderson born 24 Oct 1870 at Tritonville Road. He qualified as a
medical doctor. He was a resident physician at St Vincent’s Hospital and his
practice was at North Frederick Street. He was a member of the RDS and died a
bachelor on 22 Mar 1897 at Glenavon. He was buried at Glasnevin and probate
was to his father.
2 Katie Anderson born 5 Mar 1872 at Tritonville Road married John Joseph Dudley,
land agent from Cork on 9 Mar 1902 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook. John was
the son of John Dudley and Jane Murphy. Katie died 24 Mar 1908 at 60 Wellington
Road, Dublin aged 36 and was buried at Glasnevin. John had his four year old
nephew living with him in 1911 at Wellington Road, Dublin. No issue found.
3 Florence (Florrie) Anderson born 2 Jan 1878 at Strand Road, Sandymount was living
with her father in 1901. Possible death in 1957.
4 Edgar Perry Anderson born 14 Aug 1882 at Park Avenue, Sandymount graduated
Trinity College, Dublin. He then became a student of Robert Coey, locomotive
engineer of the Great Southern & Western Railway from February to August 1904.
Edgar was a civil engineer and set up in partnership with Patrick Harnett M’Carthy in
1905. The partnership was dissolved in 1906. He frequently prepared maps of
locations where accidents fires, murder attempts, murders had taken place for use in
insurance claims and court cases. He was a good singer and took part in the variety
shows put on by the tramway companies at the Antient Rooms. He was a director of
the West Clare Railway in 1908 and a member of the RDS. He married Ada Muriel
McEnnery at St Mary’s, Horseferry Road, Westminster on 16 Jun 1909. Muriella was
the daughter of Ambrose Mandeville McEnnery and Ada Mary Mills. He was a
shareholder and director of the Hill of Howth Tramroad Company and director of
the Cork Electric Trams and a director of the Lucan Tramway in 1921 and they lived
at Stanford House, Foxrock from 1920 to 1934. Muriella was a rally driver and in
1932 won the Austin 7 mixed Race. He was president of the Dublin Chamber of
Commerce in 1934 and was one of the 21 members of the chamber that opposed the
Bridge Gallery proposed by Hugh Lane. He was a director and later chairman of J H
Woodington (Boot and Shoe Manufacturers) of Drogheda in 1940. He was an
associate member of Irish Institute of Civil Engineers from 1905 to 1940. Muriella
Anderson died 21 May 1955 aged 66 at the Kylemore Clinic, Ballybrack late of the
Shelbourne Hotel and was buried at Deansgrange. Edgar died on 9 Dec 1959 at
Glensilva Nursing Home late of White Lodge, Dunlaoghaire. His funeral Mass was
held at the University Church and he was buried with his wife.
1 William Edgar Manderville (Bill) Anderson only child born 24 May 1910 at
Glenamuir, Palmerston Road. He was educated at Stonyhurst and Trinity
College Dublin. He was a director of Allied Irish Bank, Price Forbes Ireland
and the Royal Hotel in Glendalough. He was chairman of the National
Council for the Blind and honorary Turkish Consul in Dublin. In 1927 he
joined the RDS and acted as a steward for numerous years. He was living at
Stephen’s Green in 1955. He was also a governor of the National Gallery of
Ireland from 1986 to 1990.
5 Irene Mary Ursula Anderson youngest daughter born 18 Nov 1887 at Glenavon. She
married Dr William Roantree on 25 Nov 1908 at Donnybrook Parish Church. William
was the son of Daniel Roantree. They lived at Adelaide House, Kingstown and by 1911
had 2 children.
