Allen Family of Brooklawn
Edward Weston Allen a successful linen merchant and a founder of the Fever Hospital in Cork Street
married Eleanor (Ellen) Barrington in 1798 and they had 15 children. Richard was their fourth child
and second son. The family lived at James Street, Bridge Street and Harold's Cross (now 201 Harold's
Cross Road) which was their summer residence.
Ellen died 07.04.1819 aged 42 and her half sister Rachel Burton took over the care of the family.
Edward died on 23.04.1848 aged 82 at Mountain View, Churchtown near Dundrum and was buried at
Cork Street Quaker burial grounds.

2 Elizabeth (Bethsy) Allen born 12.07.1800 married Samuel Tolerton at the Dublin Meeting
House on 16.04.1830.
3 Henry Allen born 27.11.1801 married Eleanor Wright daughter of William Wright of North
America at Carlow Meeting House on 18.05.1826. They lived at Ballitore. Eleanor died
04.03.1850 and was buried at Ballitore.
1 Ellen Allen born circa 1828 died of smallpox on 21.12.1870 aged 42 years at Metz
where she had travelled with her uncle Richard to nurse her brother.
2 Henry John Allen born 30.11.1838 lived at Ferndene Blackrock and was a woollen
draper of Sackville Street. He recovered from smallpox caught in Metz and on
01.10.1871 he married Agnes Marriage, fourth daughter of John Marriage of
Moulsham Lodge Chelmsford at the Friends meeting House in Essex.

Harry secondly married Elizabeth Green on 23.02.1854. Elizabeth died 25.12.1870 at
84 Bushfield Avenue Sandford.
3 Charles Frederick Allen born 23.05.1857 at Ballitore.
4 Richard Allen, fourth child and second son was born on 08.01.1803 at Harold's Cross and
was tutored at home. He joined the family business aged 17 years circa 1820 He married
Anne R Webb of Lisburn on 30.10.1828 at Lisburn and they lived at Ellis Quay for two years.
Richard then set up his own business at 62 High Street as a free Trade woollen merchant. A
practicing Quaker he campaigned for the right to trade as a non guild member and with the
help of Daniel O'Connell was instrumental in the abolishment of trade guild system. They
moved to De Vesci Lodge in Monkstown in 1836 before moving to Brooklawn in 1847. Richard
became involved in the campaign against slavery and with his wife Anne attended the World
Anti Slavery meeting in London in 1840. He was also involved in the Temperance movement,
campaigned against war and the death penalty. He diversified into the 'Ready-Made' market
which was very successful. In 1849 he moved to larger premises at 52 High Street and opened
another store at 28 Sackville Street to meet demand.
Amongst his friends and wider circle of associates were Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd
Garrison, Father Theobald Mathew, Dr Barnardo, and he corresponded with the poet Thomas
Moore. The couple made annual visits to the continent and Richard and Anne's accounts of
their journeys were published in the General Advertiser. From 1860 Richard spoke as a
minister at Quaker meetings, he was a very spiritual man and had a positive outlook on life,
his words were never dark, he spoke about love of humanity, nature and peace. Anne died on
16.09.1868 at Brooklawn after a number of years of ill health and was laid to rest at the
Friends Cemetery at Temple Hill.
Richard married secondly Mary Anne Marriage eldest daughter of John Marriage of Moulsham
Lodge, Chelmsford at the Friends Meeting House in Hull on 14.05.1873. Mary Anne was quite
a number of years younger than him, but she shared his vision of peace and humanity.
Brooklawn was open to people of all creeds and colour and to both the poor and rich.
In 1876 Richard and Mary took a tour of the Holy land visiting Bethany, Galilee, Bethlehem and
Jerusalem and it was this journey that led them to support two girls from an orphanage in
Nazareth. In 1883 they visited the United States via Quebec, stopping off in many States
including Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Memphis. They also visited Kentucky where they got the
opportunity to visit freed slaves. This was an opportunity that Richard thought he would never
have and felt very privileged to have been given. Richard died peacefully on 19.01.1886 at
Brooklawn after a few weeks illness. He left nearly 45K in personal estate.

Rebecca Taylor of Queens County on 21.02.1840 at the Friends Dublin Meeting House.

9 Joseph Allen born 30.08.1809 at Harold's Cross married Mary Anne Eves on 16.06.1841 at The
Friends Meeting House in Carlow.
