Denis Doyle born circa 1813 was a grocer/publican of 141/142 Great Britain Street from 1844 to
1864 and was a member of the Licenses Retail Grocers’ and Vintners Association.
1 Patrick O’Connell Doyle second son/youngest son born May 1846 qualified from the Royal
College of Surgeons, Dublin in 1866 joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon in 1867. He
donated two crocodiles to the Zoo in 1870. He married Frances Ellen Egan at St Patrick’s
Monkstown on 4 Aug 1874 of Frances was the second daughter of William Egan of
Danesfield in Dollymount. Patrick was the Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator for District
No 3. He died at Dursley, Gloucestershire circa December 1875, aged 28. Frances died
20 Jan 1921 at Rathgar Road and was buried at Deansgrange.

Denis secondly married Maria Egan at St Paul’s Arran Quay on 25 Apr 1855. Maria was the third
daughter of Michael Egan of Ballydonagh, Kings County. He took over 42 Fleet Street and later
28 Fleet Street which he ran as a Public House. He sold his premises at Great Britain Street business
in 1864. He bought Sydenham House and some building ground in Dundrum from the Landed
Estates Court (william Wellington Bentley's estate) in 1869 for £165. He bought the
Barnadown Estate outside Gorey in 1870 (Thomas Ottiwell Moore’s estate) from the Land
Commission for £6250. The pub in Fleet Street was sold to Thomas Doyle in 1894 after his
death for £3475 but was sold again to O’Hara in 1898. The Flynns had it for about 50 years and
it traded as the Fleet Grill. Maria died 25 Jul 1875 aged 48 at Sydenham House and was buried at
Glasnevin. John died 16 Dec 1893 at Sydenham House and was buried at Glasnevin. He left 10K in
personal estate and his executors were his daughters Elizabeth and Mary.
2 Mary Johanna Doyle born circa 1857 married John Joseph 14 Jul 1880 at Holy Cross,
Dundrum. John Joseph was a merchant and was the son of William Burke of Clarinda
Park. J J died 16 Apr 1896 at Desmond (Padua), Killiney aged 39. His funeral mass was
held at University Church, St Stephen’s Green and he was buried at Glasnevin.

3 Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie) Doyle younger daughter born circa 1861 married Thomas C Burke,
a solicitor at Holy Cross Church Dundrum on 13 Jun 1883. Thomas was the youngest son
of William Burke of Clarinda Park. Thomas died 2 Jan 1892 at Sydenham House and was
buried at Glasnevin. Elizabeth died at Benburb, Leeson Park on 2 Jun 1901 and left 5K in
personal estate.

4 Michael Denis Doyle died 20 Sep 1864 aged 1 at Richmond Lodge, Milltown.
5 William Doyle, eldest son born circa 1869 married Charlotte Emily Egan on 11 Jan 1875 at
St Michael’s Kingstown. William was a wine merchant and Charlotte was the youngest
daughter of William Egan of Danesfield, Clontarf. They had 8 children all of whom survived
until 1911. William died 2 May 1890 at 4 Royal Terrace, Kingstown. And was buried in
Deansgrange. Charlotte died 5 Sep 1924 and was buried at Deansgrange.
1 Joseph Denis (JD) Doyle born circa 1876 was left the Barnadown estate together
with his brother Henry. JD was a member of the County Council. They sold the
384 acre farm in 1904 to the Estate Commissioners. JD was living at Royal Terrace
in 1921.
2 Henry Edward Doyle born circa 1880 a retired farmer living with his mother at
Kingstown in 1911. He patented a feeding appliance so constructed that the
foodstuffs for animal were automatically dispensed in 1914. He died a bachelor
on 22 Oct 1914 at Royal Terrace and was buried at Deansgrange.
3 William Ewart Doyle youngest son married Mable Philomena Stephanie (Bunnie)
McGrath on 23 Dec 1924 at Warren Street, Piccadilly, London. Mabel died
16 May 1928 aged 26. William was an engineer and patent agent of O’Connell
Street. He died 10 Jul 1940 at the Gresham Hotel survived by their twin boys born
in 1925.
4 Mary Maude Doyle born circa 1877 was a hospital nurse. She died a spinster on
1 May 1911 at Hampstead Hospital NW and was buried at Deansgrange.
5 Eva Emily Doyle born 11 Apr 1878 at 2 Roby Place married William P Timmon on
15 Sep 1910 at St Michael’s, Kingstown. William was medical officer and they lived
at Boyne Villa, Navan. They had at least two sons and two daughters. William
died 4 Jun 1947. Eva died 8 Feb 1961 and was buried at Deansgrange with her
mother.
