The Farrell brothers, builders and architects
Mr Farrell married Jane. Jane secondly married James Beggs. She lived at Stephen's Green
with her son William for a time and then moved in with her son George at Wentworth Place.
Jane died a widow 6 Dec 1825 at Wentworth Place aged 62.

William Farrell born circa 1785. He was an architect of 11-12 Kildare Street and married
Amelia Ann Dugood on 6 Aug 1808 at St Pauls. He designed Christ Church, Taney, Dundrum
in 1814 and the new St Paul’s Church (now the SPADE Enterprise Centre, King Street North,
Dublin 7) in 1821. He was appointed architect for Ulster by the Board of First Fruits in
1826. By 1826 they were living at 55 St Stephen’s Green. He was VP of the Royal Institute
of the Architects of Ireland 1849/51. They had at least fifteen children of whom six died as
children. Amelia died 7 Feb 1851 at 113 Lower Baggot Street aged 63 and William,
architect of Lower Baggot Street died at his residence on 11 Nov 1851.

2 Francis James Farrell eldest son baptised at St Pauls’ on 5 Dec 1810 was an architect of
Irishtown and was insolvent in 1841. He married Mary Ann Shepherd on 21 Oct 1844.
He was an architect living at Leeson Street in 1858 and designed Glencraig Church. He
was living at Charlemont Place and was insolvent again in 1866. Mary died on
23 Jun 1871 and Francis died 27 Feb 1894 at the Old Men's Asylum on Northbrook Road
and was buried in their communal plot.
1 Florence Olivia (Florrie) Farrell youngest daughter married James Todd on
28 Jun 1876 at Taney Church. She died on 19 Jan 1883 at Clonliffe Road.
3 Arthur Thomas Farrell second son born circa 1813 was admitted to Trinity College in
1830. He took Holy orders and married Mary Hope in 1844 (ML). He was rector of
Tullynakill, Co Down from 1858 to 1880. He died at The Rectory, Dundonald on
19 Mar 1890. Mary died at Spokane, Knock on 5 Oct 1894.

Bourne of Devon on 30 Oct 1869 in London.

at St Thomas' Church on 15 Jun 1849. Emily was the daughter of George Farrell. They
emigrated to America and were living in Kings, NY in 1880.

5 May 1873 at Tullynakill Church, Co Down. John was a commercial agent and the son
of John Sikes, a merchant. John died on 4 May 1896 at Mount Merrion Avenue. Lydia
died at 1 Phoenix Terrace, Blackrock on 25 Mar 1899.
George Farrell born circa 1787 was an architect of Wentworth Place. He was architect to the
Incorporated Society (for building of charter schools) in 1813. He survived an accident when
their horse an carriage entered the canal between the 10th and 11th lock of the Royal Canal
in 1816. His wife and two other passengers were drowned. They had been visiting the
Grand Canal Charity Schools which he has just completing building. In 1820 he provided the
plans and specifications for erecting privies at Kilmainham Gaol which was put out to tender.
In 1821 his brother William designed the Royal Stand at The Curragh and Cavan Court House
and George executed the works.
George secondly married Sara Sharpe at St Peter's Church on 9 Mar 1822. He was renting out
properties at Sidney Parade in the 1830s including Sidney Lodge opposite Simpson’s Nursery
in Merrion. Sarah died at Wentworth Place in October 1836. George is listed as sharing
premises at 17 Wentworth Place with William Robert Farrell in 1853. George died in 1865
aged 78 and was buried at Mount Jerome. No 12 Wentworth Place was offered for sale in 1867.
1 Mary Anne Farrell born circa 1823 of 17 Wentworth Place married her cousin Anthony
Farrell of Cromar Street, Belfast on 22 Dec 1846 at St Peters’. Anthony died
27 Oct 1867 and Mary Anne died 24 Nov 1902 age 79. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Sarah Jane Farrell born at 11 Wentworth Place baptised at St Marks’ on 3
1 May 1857. Sarah died at Dundonald on 7 Jun 1932.
2 Phillis Maria Farrell born 19 Sep 1859 at 11 Wentworth Place baptised at St
Marks. Phillis died 11 Jan 1943 at Dundonald.

St Thomas' Church on 15 Jun 1849. Gaspard was an architect and the son of William
Farrell of Baggot Street. They emigrated to America and were living in Kings, NY in
1880.
3 William Robert Farrell* son of Farrell architect was an architect and engineer. He
studied under John S Muvanny and worked for a number of years under the
Commissioners of Public Works in Ireland with offices at Wentworth Place in 1853. In
1855 he set up his own practice at 9 Great Brunswick Street. He was of Springfield,
Mullingar and married Mary Hariette Doran on 20 Jul 1854 at Celbridge Church, Co
Kildare. Mary was the eldest daughter of Joseph Henry Doran, a solicitor of Roselawn,
Celbridge and 5 St Andrews Street. He worked with Isaac Farrell from Lincoln Place in
1858 putting forward a unsuccessful proposal for the improvement of Carlisle Bridge. He
moved his practice to Westland Row in 1862. He was selling building ground in Blackrock
in 1862/3. He was executor to George Farrell in 1865. They lived at Chelmsford Road,
Leeson Park from 1865 to 1869.
