Adam Woods born 02.02.1816 son of James Henry Woods and Sarah Johnson from Kilwarlin, Co
Down. He was a coffee merchant and married Lydia Moss at Sycamore Alley Dublin on
13.09.1844. Lydia was the daughter of Samuel Moss from Kilternan and Frodsham, Cheshire.
Adam traded from Lennox Street and Sycamore Alley initially and in 1846 he went into business
with John Webb and expanded the business to Wholesale Druggists and Grocers. They moved
to 20 Temple Lane abutting Cecelia Street and traded at Adam Woods & Co. Their premises went
on fire in May 1850 and the building was completely consumed. The building was insured and
was rebuilt on the same site reopening in February 1851. From here they sold produce such as
raisons, figs, coconuts and almonds imported from Greece, France and Portugal which could be
purchased in jars or by the barrel. The were also agents for Goodalls & Blackwell and sold
products such as Yorkshire relish and mushroom ketchup. Adam was a founder member of the
Incorporated Dublin Total Abstinence Society and its vice president until his death.
The family lived at Woodlawn from 1856 and as a Quaker family were held in high esteem in the
area. When their house was the scene of a daring robbery in 1863 there was considerable
outrage in the neighbourhood. Adam also held the lease on Frankfurt Lodge which was rented
out. Adam's friend and partner John Webb died in 1902. Lydia died 14.06.1894 aged 76 and the
informant was her son Alfred. She was buried at Temple Hill. Adam died 18.01.1906 at
Woodlawn, the informant his son Frederick. He left 9k in personal estate and his administrators
were his three surviving sons.
1 Frederick William Woods eldest son born 19.09.1845 at Rehoboth, South Circular Road,
Dublin. Frederick married Anna Maria Uprichard 3rd daughter of William Uprichard of Bann
Vale, Gilford, Co Down on 23.05.1874 at the Friends Meeting House, Moyallan, Tullyish, Co
Down. He was a spice merchant living at 5 Vergemount Hall, in Clonskeagh in 1875. Anna
Maria died of typhoid fever on 22.01.1900 aged 48 years and Frederick died on 27.07.1936
aged 91 years both at Thorncliffe, Rathgar.

Chesham Road, Norbiton, Surrey. Probate to widow Wilhelmine.
3 Charles Henry Woods born 21.02.1849 at Rehaboth. Charles a Cotton Spinner lived at Underhill,
Bolton, Lancashire with his sister Mary in 1901 and 1911.
4 Lydia Margaret Woods born 02.08.1850 at Rutland House, Rathgar. Lydia died unmarried on
10.02.1923 aged 72 years at Woodlawn, Dundrum. Informant sister Elizabeth.
5 Elizabeth Woods born 02.11.1851 at Rathgar. Elizabeth died unmarried on 29.12.1930 aged
79 years at Woodlawn, Dundrum. Informant sister Mary.
6 Sarah Edith Woods born 11.02.1854 at Rathgar Road and died unmarried on 04.11.1867 aged
14 years at York and is buried at Temple Hill, Blackrock.
7 Mary Emma Woods born 03.05.1858 at Woodlawn living with her brother Charles in Bolton in
1901 and 1911. Lydia died unmarried on 13.06.1936 at 49 Manor Place, Edinburgh. Probate
to brothers Frederick and Alfred.
8 Anna Woods born 07.08.1860 at Woodlawn and was living there in 1901. Anna died unmarried
on 13.02.1932 aged 71 years at Underhill, Bolton, Lancashire and is interred at Temple Hill.
Probate to sister Mary.
