John Winters born 16 Jan 1874 at Carrick, Loughbrickland near Bainbridge, Co Down son of
John Winters a farmer and his wife Jane Clugston. John joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police
at the age of 19. He was on the DMP Tug of War team; The Invincibles of Kevin Street Station.
John was living in Blackrock and married Julia Lyons on 8 Aug 1900 at Tullow Chapel in Co
Carlow. Julia was a milliner living in Tullow and the daughter of Patrick Lyons, a farmer and his
wife Anne Cosgrave. They were living on the Rock Road in 1901 and John was a constable. By
1911 they were living at Rutledge Terrace, South Circular Road and John was a sergeant. In
1920 he was promoted to the rank of inspector and placed in charge of the traffic regulations
for Dublin. During his period of office as Dublin’s Traffic Chief he introduced continental
systems to relieve traffic congestion in the city and was responsible for the training of the
civic guards on point duty. For this he visited a number of Continental capitals and cities in
England and took on point duty. When The Civic Guard (renamed the Garda Síochána na
hÉireann in 1923) merged with the DMP in 1925 he coached the new Tug of war teams and
that year they won in Ireland and across the channel, 60 gold medals, four challenge cups and
a challenge shield. In April 1926 he was promoted to the rank of Superintendent. He died
from complications after pneumonia on 16 Jul 1926 at Bleak House, Clontarf. His funeral
mass was held at Mount Argus and he was buried at Mount Jerome. His funeral cortege was
led by a guard of honour of officers and the band of the Phoenix Park depot. Julia died
24 Apr 1969 at St Columcille’s Hospital late of Royal Terrace West, Dun Laoghaire.
1 John Joseph (Nick) Winters born 15 Feb 1902 at 1 Cross Avenue, Blackrock. He
was educated at O’Connell’s Schools and attended University College, Dublin. He
played for both UCD and Lansdowne Rugby Club in the 1920s. He graduated as a
mechanical and electrical engineer. He was living at Bleak House and married Anne
Louise Kelly on 19 Aug 1929 at the Church of the Holy Name in Rathmines. Anne
was living in Ranelagh and the daughter of Francis Kelly, a clerk. By 1931 he had
his own practice at 27 Molesworth Street as an engineer and employed various
architects. He designed the Athboy water scheme in 1935, he was engineer in
charge to build Edenburn Hospital, Tralee in 1937 and the Rosaveel water scheme
in 1938. He enlisted and served with the Army Corps of Engineers and the
Construction Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel during WWII. After the war he was
appointed the Government arbitrator under the Land Reference Committee and
dealt with the compensation claims when acquisitions of lands etc were made by
government. He was appointed a Leinster selector for Rugby in 1948 and Ireland
selector in 1955. Anne died on 11 Jun 1955 at Clarinda Park and was buried at
Deansgrange. John died 15 Jul 1961 at 25 Royal Terrace West and was buried with
his first wife Anne. He was survived by his second wife Maria (Mia) from Vienna,
two sons and four daughters.
2 Patrick W Winters born 24 April 1903 at 1 Cross Avenue, Blackrock. He was a clerk
and married Catherine Fanning on 26 Feb 1924 at the Pro Cathedral on Marlboro
Street. Catherine was the daughter of William Fanning, a shop keeper. Catherine
died aged 32 in 1932 at Shelmartin Avenue, Marino.
1 Sean Winters married and died in 1967.
Patrick was a publicity agent living at Bleak House, Marino Avenue, Clontarf. He
secondly married Mary Bridget (Mamie) O’Rourke on 7 Jun 1943 at the University
Church, Dublin. Mamie was living at 114 Lower Baggot Street and was the daughter
of Andrew Rourke, a farmer. Patrick was the managing director of Allied Textile Ltd,
a knitting and textile firm. They firm was established in 1946 and by 1952 they were
based in Chapelizod and employed about 300 people. He was also the director of
Fabrics Ltd, Beltex Wollen Mills and Marie O’Rourke Ltd. Marie was former model
and she was also a designer. She also sold other designer’s clothes, specialising in
wedding outfits from her premises at 37 Wicklow Street in the 1940s & 50s. They
lived at Woodley Park from 1947 to 1963. Patrick ran a nursery on a commercial
basis from the grounds employing gardeners, and girls to do transplanting and light
work. Assistant gardeners were paid £4 per week. The head gardener was on
£6.15/. a week and had their own cottage on the grounds. They sold flowers,
tomato plants and celery plants as well as the produce. In 1955 Patrick put a 5000
square foot hot house up for sale. Patrick died on 17 Apr 1957 at the Mater Nursing
Home, late of Woodley Park, Dundrum. He was buried at Deansgrange. He was
survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. Mamie died aged 51 on 25 Jul 1963
at 96 Leeson Street late of Woodley Park aged and was buried with her husband.
