William Medcalf was a brewer of Dublin and in 1750 took a lease of 4 acres in Blackrock from
Lord Fitzwilliam. The lease was for 99 years and for £10 and 2 x 10lb sugar loaves every
Christmas. The following year he took a lease on a further 6 acres at Blackrock for 99 years at
£16.10s and two 10lb sugar loaves at Christmas. By 1751 he had married Margaret (possibly
Hutchinson). He built a stone house lined with brick in the modern style opposite the new
entrance to Mount Merrion. He had this up for lease in 1754 and up to 11 acres of meadow
land were available with the house. He could be contacted either at the house or at his premises
in Pimlico. He leased a 4 acre site (Salt house field and Payfield) with a house to Lady Arbella
Denny in 1756. He was church warden of Stillorgan in 1762. He was the owner of Stillorgan
brewery from at least 1774 but maybe as early as 1747. He died on 11 Apr 1792 at Stillorgan.

1 William Medcalf born circa 1790 was a builder/carpenter of Stillorgan. He
married Catherine Hall in 1817. William died 1 Mar 1869 and was buried at
Stillorgan. Catherine died 25 May 1877 at Stillorgan aged 84 and was buried at
Stillorgan.
1 William Medcalf born circa 1818 died from bronchitis on 4 Mar 1886 at
Stillorgan. He was buried at Stillorgan, probate to his brother Peter.
2 Edward Medcalf was a foreman carpenter and architect. He married Jane
Trim on 6 May 1852 at Nun’s Cross, Wicklow. Edward died 23 Jan 1886 at
the SCR. Jane died 9 Apr 1908 at 132 Tritonville Road age 79 at the home
of her son in law and is buried at Stillorgan.
1 Katherine Jane Medcalf born circa 1854 married James Marks Johnston
on 7 Sep 1881 at St James’. James was a furniture clerk and the son of
Richard Johnston an outfitter.
2 William Medcalf born circa 1855 in Co Wicklow. He was a builder’s
clerk and married Mary (Pollie) Robinson on 10 Jun 1882 at St James’ Church.
Pollie was the second surviving daughter of James F Robinson, a merchant of
19 Westland Row. Mary died 8 Nov 1907 at 1 Knapton Terrace, Kingstown.
William was a quantity surveyor and a widower living in Kingstown with three
children and his niece Ethel Robinson in 1911. He died 2 Sep 1933 at Hillside
Dun Laoghaire.

3 Jessie E Medcalf born circa 1895 in Dublin.
3 Peter Medcalf born circa 1822. He was a carpenter/builder and married Harriet
Hackett on 15 Feb 1849 at St Peter’s Dublin. Harriet was the daughter of John
Hackett, a farmer. Harriet died 18 Mar 1871 at Harrington Street and Peter died a
widower on 5 Jan 1888 at Stillorgan, his niece Bessie the informant. He is buried at
Stillorgan. Probate to his sister Kate.
4 Mary Medcalf eldest daughter born circa 1824 married Edward Logue, a brewer
in 1844. They lived at Hallstead Cottage in Galloping Green with Edward's mother
until 1850. His mother ran a grocery shop from Galloping Green in from 1836 to
1856. Mary died a widow at the home of her brother William in Stillorgan on
5 Feb 1881. She is buried in Stillorgan.
5 Robert Medcalf born circa 1825 died 25 Sep 1835 and was buried at Stillorgan.
6 Elizabeth (Bessie) Medcalf born circa 1830 at Stillorgan. She died a spinster
29 Jan 1880 and was buried at Stillorgan. Her brother William present at death.
7 Kate Medcalf born circa 1831. She had a house at Grove View for rent in 1891. As
only surviving daughter, she died a spinster on 22 Mar 1899 at Harcourt Terrace,
Dublin. She is buried in Stillorgan.
8 Richard Medcalf born circa 1833. He was a carpenter/builder living at Stillorgan
and married Jane Hill on 22 Mar 1877 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. They were living
at Barrow Street in 1901. Richard died at 12 Barrow St, Dublin on 21 Mar 1908
and is buried in Stillorgan. Jane died aged 81 on 3 May 1927 at the residence of her
son Richard.
1 William Henry Medcalf born circa 1878 was a postman in 1901. He was a
stores clerk and married Jane Elizabeth McDermott of Pembroke Cottages on
28 Aug 1907 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook. Jane was the daughter of
Francis McDermott, a coachman. William died 5 Dec 1965 at Sandymount and
is buried at St Brigid’s Stillorgan. Jane died 24 Nov 1970 at O’Connell Gardens,
Sandymount aged 87 and is buried with her husband.

2 Richard Samuel Medcalf born 8 Dec 1880 at Ranelagh a carpenter living with
his parents in 1901. He married Winifred Ellen Joyner in 3 Oct 1906 at St Marks.
Winifred was the daughter of Charles Joyner, a foreman. Winifred died
20 Dec 1913 at Home Villas, Donnybrook.
1 Richard James Medcalf born 24 Aug 1907 living with his parents and
grandmother in 1911. He was an electrician and married Anne Lewis at
St Mary’s Donnybrook on 27 Jun 1933.
2 Charles Henry Medcalf born 4 Sep 1908 at Barrow Street died same
place on 2 Mar 1909.
Richard secondly married Mary Elizabeth (Jane) Reilly at Elham, Kent in 1923.
Richard died 16 May 1955 at Estate Cottages, Northumberland Road and is
buried at St Brigid’s, Stillorgan. Jane died 18 Feb 1973 aged 84 and is buried
with her husband.

3 Mary Lydia Metcalf born circa 1885 was a children’s nurse in 1911. She
married John Turner in 26 Dec 1911 at St Mark’s Church, Dublin. John was an
engine fitter and the son of George Turner, an engine driver.
4 Katherine Jane Metcalf born circa born circa 1887 was a milliner in 1911 living
with her mother in 1911. She married Ernest Barnfield 30 Jul 1931 at St
Stephen’s Church Dublin. Ernest was a widower, a store keeper and the son of
John Barnfield, a stonemason.
