Edward White born circa 1820 son of Richard and Maria White of Abbeyville, Croom.
He was educated at Midleton College and admitted Kings Inns. He was a solicitor with
offices at 13 Lower Mount Street and his father was trustee of the Villiers estate. His
older brother Richard was shot dead by his cousin William White in 1847 in an
altercation of land and cows. He married Mary Elizabeth Sayers on 18 Aug 1848 at
Ballycahane Church, Limerick. Mary was the daughter of Arthur Sayers of Limerick.
It was a joint ceremony with his sister Bessy marrying William Fry. Mary Liz died at
Fort Etna on 17 Jun 1856.
1 Daughter White born 3 May 1850 at Mount Street.
2 Lucinda White born 26 Jan 1852 at Mount Street died a spinster in 1941 and was
buried at Deansgrange.
3 Arthur White eldest son born July 1855 at Fort Etna was a JP & land agent he
married Mary Georgina Westropp on 17May 1905 at St Peter’s Church
Bournemouth. Mary was the older daughter of the late Colonel Massy Westropp of
Attyfin, Co Limerick. They were living at Patrickswell Limerick in 1911 and had no
children. Arthur died in 1922.
Edward secondly married Aphra Elizabeth Lloyd on 6 Apr 1858 at Corncomohide Church,
Limerick. Aphra was the youngest daughter of Edward Lloyd, of Heathfield, Co Limerick.
Edward died 7 Nov 1911 at Fort Etha.
4 Daughter White born 10 Jul 1859 at Fort Etna.
5 Edward White born 27 Apr 1862 at Fort Etna. He qualified as a solicitor in 1883. He
married Elizabeth Galloway Garrett on 5 Apr 1887 at Christ Church, Leeson Park.
Elizabeth was the fourth daughter of Richard Garrett, County Inspector, RIC in
Londonderry and Ellen Dillon. He was a partner in Messrs White & Meares of
Molesworth Street and later Stephens Green. He was a Knight of Grace of St John of
Jerusalem. He was appointed a commissioner in Irish Lights in 1914. They lived at
Ashton, Killiney in 1901 and 1911, and at Seafield, Stillorgan Road from 1914 to 1915.
They were at Fitzwilliam place and Dillon Lodge, Ballinascorney in 1919.
Edward was a founder member of the Irish Game Protection Association. Chairman of
IREC the Irish Ex Service industries. He had a keen interest in motoring, was a member
of the RIAC and one of the chief organisers of the Gordon Bennett Race. He was also
on the committee of the Jubilee Nursing Fund. Edward died while on holiday in
Folkestone on 15 Jul 1936, late of 20 Ailesbury Road. The funeral was held at Christ
Church, Folkestone and his sister Aphra White attended. He was buried at Hawkings
Garden Cemetery. Elizabeth died on 3 Jul 1945 at 20 Ailesbury Road and was buried at
Deansgrange. There is a plaque in their memory at St Anne’s Dawson Street.
1 Edward Robert Knox White born 13 Jan 1892 at St James Terrace, Clonskea. He
was a cadet at Cheltenham College Contingent Officers’ Training Corps in 1911
and was a second-lieutenant on probation. He was a lieutenant in 1915. He
served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Royal Flying Corps, Royal Irish Regiment
during WW1. He was based at the War Office, Egyptian Army, Khartoum in 1921.
He moved to Ceylon in 1932 and died 24 May 1977 in Ashford, Kent.
2 Richard White born 14 Dec 1893 at St James Terrace, Clonskea. He was a captain
in the Royal Navy in 1936.
3 Arthur Lisle White born 9 Jan 1895 in Dublin. He joined the Royal Navy and was
on the HMS Conway Training Ship in 1907 and a midshipman in 1911. He
married Ethel Grace Llewellyn in 1918 in London they were living at Crofton,
Hampshire in 1921. He was a commander in 1936 and died in 18 Dec 1959 at
Bridgend, Glamorganshire.
1 Edward Lisle White only son born circa 1920 at Glascote, Warwickshire killed
in action on 31 May 1940 in HMS Keith off Dunkirk.
4 Phyllis Avola White born 13 Jan 1896 in Dublin married Captain Thomas Reynolds
on 1 Jan 1919 at St George’s, Hanover Square, London. Thomas was with the King’s
Own Yorkshire Regiment and the only son of Thomas Reynold of Edgemore,
Frimley, Surrey. In 1939 Thomas was the headmaster of Amesbury School,
Haslemere. In 1948 they made a round trip to Africa. Phyllis died 18 Nov 1966 at
Kent.
1 Thomas Reynolds only son was a captain. He married Cynthia Eden on
22 Jan 1948 at Grayshott.
5 Aline Elizabeth (Betty) White born 22 Oct 1910 at Ballinascorney, Brittas. She married
Captain Pryce Henry Peacock, RAMC on 20 Oct 1937 at Holy Trinity Church,
Brompton, London. Pryce was the only son of Doctor Pryce Peacock. Pryce died
9 Jul 1950 in Buxton.
6 Richard White third son born 12 Jun 1863 at Fort Etna. He was a land agent and
married Anna Maria Croly on 7 Apr 1892 at St Mathias’ Church. Anna Maria was the
eldest daughter of Henry Gray Croly of Kilmacud House. They lived in Kilkenny in
1911 and had seven children. Richard died 26 Apr 1933 and was buried at
Deansgrange. Anna Maria died 29 Nov 1941 and was buried with her husband.
1 Aubrey Cecil White youngest son born circa 1896 enlisted and served with
the York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action in 1916 in France.
2 Aphra Gwendoline Lloyd White born 1898 died unmarried on 5 Aug 1935 at
Donnybrook and was buried with her parents.
3 Eva Maud White born circa 1904 died unmarried in 1946 and was buried
with her parents.
7 Annie (Lilian) third daughter born circa 1865 married John Archibald Irvine on 28 Mar 1893
at Kilpecon Church, Limerick. John was a Presbyterian minister of Liverpool and the son of
James Irvine. They had a least four children. They were living Berwick upon Tweed in 1911.
Their three sons fought in WW1 and one was killed. John died in 1949 at Biggar.
8 Aphra Emily White born 2 Jun 1866 at Fort Etna died in 1868.
9 Aphra Emily White born 18 Jul 1868 died in 1869.
10 Aphra Elizabeth White born 21 Feb 1871 at Fort Etna attended her brothers funeral in 1936.
She was a classics scholar and writer of religious poetry. She died 1 Jan 1962 at her home
in Alfriston Road, Clapham Common. Her funeral service was held at the church of Saint
Barnabas.
11 Elizabeth M White fourth daughter married Frederick Jansen on 30 Sep 1901 at the
Presbyterian Church, Manila, Philippine Islands.
