William George Burton born 17.03.1848 son of Maria Thomasin Massy nee Putland* and her
second husband Staff Surgeon Major Edward William Burton of Army Medical Staff who
served with the British military on the island of Malta. His father was staff surgeon at the
General Military Hospital, Dublin and died in 1850 when William was only two. His mother
remarried in 1855 when he was seven, to Edward Collingwood David Bell.
William was a manager of the Munster bank when he married Dora MacMahon of Knockaney
Glebe on 28.04.1874 at Knockaney Church, Co Limerick. Dora was the eldest daughter of Rev
James Fitzgibbon MacMahon, Vicar of Knockaney and Dora Taylor. Witnesses; Frank C
Burton and George Finch. The Munster Bank collapsed in 1885 and William became an officer
with the High Court of Justice. The family lived at Palermo, Number 97 Merrion Avenue in 1897
and were living at Fairholme Monkstown by 1900. Dora died 11.02.1920 at Rockview Terrace,
Dalkey and is buried at Deansgrange. William died 07.05.1932 at 207 Richmond Road,
Kingstown-on-Thames and is buried at Deansgrange.
1 Ethel Dora Burton born 21.03.1875 at Knockaney Glebe, Limerick, father resident in
Baltinglass. Ethel died on 25.09.1875 aged 6 months at 1 Sandycove Avenue.
2 George Stratford Burton eldest son born circa 07.12.1877 at Kilmallock, Limerick. George
of the Royal Artillery was living at Fairholme, Monkstown when he married Sybil Henrietta
Pollen on 15.01.1903 at St Bartholomew’s Parish Church, Dublin. Sybil of Carisbrook
House, Pembroke Road was the daughter of Arthur David Pollen. During WW1 Sybil
worked as a VAD with the Red Cross and was a founder member of the British Legion,
Cheltenham branch. George attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Sybil died on
14.03.1940 at The Bungalow, Cheltenham.

George secondly married Agnes Dods Baillie on 14.12.1940 at Cheltenham. Agnes was the
daughter of the late Ralph Baillie of Colinsburgh, Scotland. George died on 01.04.1953 at
Edgeware Hospital.
3 Percy Collingwood Burton second son born 21.08.1879 in Wicklow. He moved to London
in 1898 where is got a job as a journalist on ‘Answers’ where he worked alongside Alfred
Harmsworth (later Lord Northridge). In 1899 he enlisted and served in South Africa during
the Boar War. He was captured by De Wet who he interviewed and sent his story back to
London where it was published. He escaped with a number of other prisoners by digging a
tunnel. He set up his own advertising business and married Christabel Rose Harmsworth
on 14.06.1905 at St Andrew’s Church, Totteridge, Herts. Christabel was the youngest
daughter of late Alfred Harmsworth and sister of Lord Northridge. He enlisted and served
during WWI and attained the rank of Colonel and received an OBE in 1919. They lived at
Totteridge, Herts. Percy a DL for Hertfordshire died on 20.05.1953 at the White House,
Codicote. He is buried at Deansgrange. Christobel died 11.06.1967 at Marylebone, London.

2 Christabel Burton born 18 Jun 1909 at The Old House, Totteridge. She married Peter
Bielenberg, a German lawyer on 29.09.1934 at the German Embassy in London. They
lived initially in Hamburg, then moved to Berlin. They moved to Carlow in 1948 and
Christabel wrote about her experiences living in Nazi Germany during WWII.

6 Edward Francis Nathaniel Burton born 21.08.1884 at Baltinglass. Edward of Queenstown
Lodge, Dalkey a captain in the Royal Irish Rifles when he married Aileen Bond Griffiths of
Glenageary Lodge, Kingstown, daughter of Lewis E Griffiths on 19.09.1912 at Dalkey Parish
Church.
7 Granville Pierrepoint Burton born 05.04.1886 at Luneberg, Sandymount. Granville, late of
the Royal Field Artillery was appointed to a lieutenancy in the North Rhodesian Police at
Livingstone in 1913. He married Rachel M Boright in 1923.
8 Eva Barbara Burton born 16.12.1887 at Tolka Falls, Finglas. Eva of Queenstown Lodge
married Henry Herbert Newtown, a bank clerk of 24 Royal Terrace West, son of Henry
Richard Newton on 06.06.1912 at Dalkey Parish Church.
9 Dora Burton born 09.07.1893 at Charleville, Churchtown. Dora of Queenstown Lodge
married Simeon Robert Franks Empey on 24.05.1916 at Dalkey Parish Church. Simeon was
with the Royal Irish Rifles based at Victoria Barracks, Belfast and the son of Robert James
Empey. Simeon was killed on 17.08.1916 aged 23 years and is buried at Acheux British
Cemetery, Somme, France.
*Maria Putland, niece of James Halfhide married Dillon H Massy of the 27th Regiment in Jamaica in July 1835.
