Jacob West born circa 1772 son of Matthew West, master goldsmith and Mary Ann Roan and
grandson of Jacob West, a master goldsmith of Skinners Row and Mary Precious. He
married Sarah Fry of Nicholas Street on 19 Jun 1801 at St Nicholas Within. He was taken in
as partner by his father in law John Clarke of 9 Capel Street in 1802. He was Sheriff of Dublin
in 1814 and an alderman in 1824. His partner John Clarke retired in 1824. He was Lord
Mayor of Dublin in 1829/30. His son James entered the partnership in 1829 and they traded
as West and Son of Capel Street until 1847 when they moved to 18 College Green. They were
living at Loughlinstown House by 1843. Sarah died at Loughlinstown House on 12 Jan 1853
and Jacob a JP died at Loughlinstown House on 17 Mar 1889.
1 William West born 7 Feb 1803. He graduated Trinity and was a doctor. He married
Belinda Annabella Hickman in 1829 and they had at least five children. William died
8 Oct 1837.
2 James West second son baptised 23 Jun 1805 at St Georges. He married Brillianna
Clarke on 2 Sep 1829 at Donnybrook Church; the Rev William Henry Archer officiated.
Brillianna was the second daughter of John Clarke (his father’s business partner) of
Willfield, Dublin. They lived at Mount Street before moving to Thornhill, Stillorgan from
1843 to 1846. James was churchwarden at Stillorgan in 1843. Brilianna died at The
Priory Monkstown on 3 Jul 1851.
1 Maria Sarah West eldest daughter born 15 Jan 1833 at Mount Street baptised at
St Peters on 5 Feb 1833 died 6 Feb 1847 at 42 Upper Mount Street.
2 Susanna West born 7 Jul 1834 at Mount Street baptised on 10 Aug 1834 at St
Peters died at Mount Street on 6 Jun 1847.
3 James Robert West eldest born July 1840 at Sandymount House died 27 Apr 1847
at Mount Street.
4 John Clarke West born 14 Aug 1842 at South Hill Avenue. As eldest son he died at
The Grove, Ballybrack on 16 May 1862.
5 Henry William West third son died 19 Mar 1846 at Thorn Hill, Stillorgan.
6 William Henry West born 25 Dec 1846 baptised at St Stephen’s on 15 Jan 1847.
He married Jane Bolton on 15 Jul 1869 at Kilmuckridge. They lived at Farley, Ferns,
Co Wexford and William bred racehorses. Jane died at Kingstown on 26 Sep 1926
and William died on 26 Jan 1927 at Dun Laoghaire.
1 Susan Ismay West only child born 3 Oct 1871. She married Captain Henry
James Lermitte of the Royal Scots Fusiliers on 26 Jan 1896 at St Stephen’s,
Dublin.
7 Janet Alice West. As only daughter she married widower, Major Robert Callwell
Smith on 2 Sep 1868 at Monkstown Church.
8 Harriet Sophia West fourth daughter died at Wyat Vllle on 31 Jul 1847.
James West a widower of Loughlinstown and Upper Mount Street secondly married
Ismenia Euphemia Catherine Watson of Monkstown on 20 Jul 1852 at Monkstown Church.
Ismenia was a widow and the daughter of Edward Archer Langley. James died 6 Oct 1868
at Shanganagh Grove, Ballybrack and left 120k in personal estate. His wife and his brother
Charles his executors. He left West and Sons to his two sons. However, his son William
did not remain in the business. Ismenia died 2 Mar 1890 aged 73 at Shanganagh Grove.
9 Langley Archer West youngest son born 15 Jun 1853. He married Caroline Lydia
Clayton on 18 Aug 1880 at St Paul’s Church, Glenageary. Caroline was the daughter
of Dr William Beauchamp Clayton. Langley was elected master of the Goldsmith
Company in 1903, a position he held until his death. He purchased the Mannings
building; 102/103 Grafton Street in 1911. It was demolished and a new building was
designed by W H Byrne & Son, architects of Suffolk Street. He opened their new
establishment; Grafton House in 1913 with its Italian marble, Labrador granite
pilasters and bronze window frames and continued to run West & Sons. They were
living in Greystones by 1892 and three of their four children had survived. Langley
died 2 Apr 1932 in Greystones. Caroline died 28 Jun 1948.
1 Archer Beauchamp West born 8 Jun 1881 at Ballybrack. He was a major
in the Royal Munster Fusiliers and married Beatrice Grace Stanley on
28 Jan 1920. He died 14 Dec 1920 at Greystones.
2 Ismé Ada West born 15 Jul 1882 died before 1901.
3 Cecil Guy Harley L’Estange West born 20 Nov 1890 at Merrion Square. He
joined the Dublin Fusiliers and was based in Farnborough in 1911. He was
captured on 27 Aug 1914 and spent the next 4 years as a POW. He married
Florence Jessie White at The English Church, The Hauge, Netherlands in 1919.
4 Herbert Kenhelm West born 23 Jul 1892 at Brighton House Greystones. He
was a driver for the Red Cross during WW1.
3 George West born 19 Aug 1806 baptised at St George’s on 3 Sep 1806. He was a doctor
and married Sarah Jeffs in London on 21 Feb 1835. He died at Hastings on 26 Jun 1857.
4 Frances West baptised 9 Oct 1807 on St George’s.
5 Henry West fifth son born 21 Apr 1809 baptised 3 May 1809 at St George’s. He graduated
Trinity and was admitted Kings Inns. He married at least twice and had nine children. He
was later a county court judge and died 21 Apr 1881 at Loughlinstown House.
6 Amelia West baptised 5 Jun 1810 died 4 Feb 1826.
7 Anna Maria West baptised at St George’s in 1813. She married in 1836.
8 Louisa West baptised at St Georges on 18 July 1814 married late in life.
9 Harriett Sarah West fourth daughter baptised 22 Oct 1815 at St George’s. She married
in 1850 and died in July 1886.
10 Julia West baptised 8 Dec 1816 died 3 Jun 1873 at Loughlinstown House.
11 Charles Mathew West born 29 Mar 1818, died 10 Oct 1883. He married Dorothea Aylmer
Kempston in 1849. He was a JP and died at Rathdrum on 10 Oct 1883.
12 Charlotte West baptised 26 Sep 1819 at St Georges. She married in 1851, no issue found.
