Watkins of Prospect, Roebuck and Ardee Street
1 Richard Watkins born circa 1783. Richard was in partnership and was co owner of
Byrne & Watkins of Byrnes’s Hill Brewery the Coombe with (his brother?) Joseph in
1815. They dissolved the partnership with James Edmond Byrne in 1819. They went
into partnership with Alderman Hugh Trevor, ex Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1819 and
moved their brewery production to Ardee Street and traded as Trevors and Watkins.
Hugh had just recently dissolved his partnership with father and son partners John
Keogh senior and junior. Hugh died at Leeson Street in 1829. By the 1820’s, the
brewery at Ardee Street was the third largest in Dublin, with an output of 300 barrels
per week. Michael Sweetman’s with 450 barrels and Guinness’ with and output 600
barrels per week. Richard married Catherine Wood circa 1810. The Watkins family
lived at Prospect House, Roebuck leased from Lady Harty from 1841 to 1852.
Catherine was the sister of Sir Matthew, MP for London (therefore daughter of
William Wood - died 1809), a serge maker from Exeter and Tiverton both in Devon,
by his wife Catherine Cluse). Richard died 11 Feb 1852 at Prospect House, Roebuck
and was buried at St Luke’s. The furniture and household effects were sold after his
death. Catherine died 11 Jun 1859 at Blackrock aged 76.
1 Maria Catherine Watkins born circa 1812 married David Aston, MD on
1 Jul 1830 at St Luke's. David died in 1839 at York Street. Maria died at
Adelaide Terrace on 10 Jan 1891.
1 Catherine Aston, eldest daughter married Thomas W Howe of Exeter on
16 Sep 1853 at Taney Church.
2 Maria Aston youngest daughter. She was the granddaughter of the late
Richard Watkins of Prospect House and married Rev Charles Seymore
(sic) Langley on 30 Sept 1854 at Abbeyleix Church. Charles was the
eldest son of Thomas Edmund Langley. He was curate of Taney 1855/56
and rector of St Mary's, Clonmel from 1856 to 1861. Charles died
9 Apr 1885 at Kilworth Rectory.
1 Mary Katherine Langley born 12 Oct 1855 at 3 Campfield Terrace
baptised at Taney died 1 Jan 1892 at Kilworth rectory.
2 Fridz Wilde Henrietta Langley born 17 Apr 1864 in Fermoy, Cork
3 Charles Seymour born 27 Jul 1868 in Fermoy, Cork.
3 Richard Watkins Aston died 28 Mar 1834.

1 May Elizabeth Aston died unmarried on 6 Mar 1947 at Fitzwilliam,
Blackrock.
2 Isabella Watkins second daughter born circa 1818 married Edward Wells of
Wallingford, Berkshire on 17 Aug 1842 at Taney Church. Edward was the eldest
son of Edward Wells of Wallingford, Berkshire. Isabella died on 24 Jan 1900 at
Wallingford.
3 Elizabeth Watkins third daughter born circa 1822 married John Heages Marshall
on 27 Apr 1842 at Taney Church. Elizabeth died 18 Jun 1843, three weeks after
her confinement at Wallingford, Berkshire.
4 Henrietta Watkins born circa 1821 married Rev John Bray Coles on 1 May 1862 at
St Mary’s Parish Church, Wallingford. John was the rector of Woodham Walterson
and the son of the late John Colles, barrister. John died on 31 Oct 1874 and
Henrietta died at Wallingford on 18 Oct 1887.
5 Matilda Watkins youngest daughter born 24 May 1823 baptised at St Catherine's.
She married Frederick Marshall of Kensington on 17 Apr 1845 at Taney Church.
Frederick was a wine merchant and the son of John Marshall, a surgeon.
2 Joseph Watkins born 20 Aug 1783 was in partnership with (his brother?) Richard
Watkins as brewers of Porter. He married Mary Anne Brunton, widow of Robert
Brunton on 29 Jul 1823 at St Peter’s Dublin. Mary Anne was the only daughter of
Peter Read of Peter-place, Dublin. They lived initially at Peter-place and were in Elm
Park by 1829. Mary Anne died at Elm Park on 15 Jun 1849 after a long illness.
Joseph had another brewery at Warrenmount and at Bray where ale was produced.
He was a director of the Patriotic Assurance Company of Ireland in 1858. Joseph
died 13 Jul 1867 at Elm Park and left 80K in personal estate. He was buried at
Oughterard, Co Kildare with his wife. The running of the brewery was taken over by
Wellington Darley, Joseph Farran Darley and William Spencer Cooper who continued
trading at Joseph Watkins & Co. Joseph Watkins & Co was taken over by Jameson Pim
& Co in 1904 but Alfred Darley a grandson of Joseph Watkins who was in partner in
the firm was chief of manufacturing. They traded as Watkins Jameson Pim & Co and
circa 1948 they ceased trading having moved into the Public House trade.
1 Mary Watkins eldest daughter born 6 Nov 1827 at 7 Peter’s-place baptised
same date at St Luke’s. Mary married Captain William Cooper of the 70th
Regiment on 23 Feb 1861 at Donnybrook Church.
2 Catherine (Kate) Watkins born 21 Jan 1829 baptised at St Luke’s married Joseph
Farran Darley on 12 Nov 1850 at Donnybrook Church. Joseph was a barrister
and the son of William Darley.
3 Richard Henry Watkins born 15 Nov 1830 at Elm Park baptised at St Luke’s
died at Elm Park on 29 Nov 1831.
4 Isabella Watkins baptised at St Luke's on 29 Jun 1832.
5 Marian Watkins born 31 May 1832 baptised at St Luke’s on 6 Jul 1832.
6 Maria (Frances) Watkins youngest daughter married William W Hackett on
31 Oct 1867 at Farnborough Church. William was the son of the Rev T Hackett,
vicar of Boyle.
