Moyallen Moyallen
Joseph Wakefield son of Edward Wakefield of Lad Lane, London. He was a merchant of Lad
Lane, London before moving to Lurgan, Co Armagh. He married Hannah Christie on
18 Dec 1760 at Lurgan. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas Christie of Moyallen, Co Down
who donated the land for the building of a meeting house in Moyallen. Joseph worked for
Thomas Christie and later ran a bleaching green at Moyallen. Hannah died 14 Jul 1779 at
Moyallen and Joseph died same place on 8 Apr 1821.
1 Thomas Christie Wakefield born 11 Feb 1772. He married Jane Sandwith Goff on
8 Jan 1795 at Forrest, Co Wexford. Jane was the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Goff
of Hoarstown, Co Wexford. Jane died 8 Jul 1836 at Lansdowne Place, Cheltenham.
He was a linen manufacturer but retired at an early age. He moved to England circa
1846. He was a member of the anti-slavery movement and in 1828 when a ship from
Bermuda was condemned with twelve slaves on board, he was one of the delegation
to offer employment to any of them you wished to disembark and become free men.
Thomas died 18 Jun 1861 at Glenallen, Torquay. He was interred at Grey Friars in the
same grave as his wife.
1 Thomas Christie Wakefield born 17 Oct 1795 at Moyallen. He married Mary
Anne Wilcocks on 16 Oct 1817 at Rathfryland Meeting House. Mary Anne was
the daughter of Thomas Wilcocks and they lived at Marino, Co Down. They lived
at Belmont, Stillorgan in 1822 where some of their property was stolen and later
recovered. Mary Anne died 7 Jan 1857. Thomas died a widower at Derramore,
Bessbrook, Co Down on 22 Nov 1878.
1 Sarah Wakefield eldest daughter born 17 Jan 1819 died 2 Jan 1833.
2 Edward Thomas Wakefield eldest son born 24 Jan 1821 at Leeson Street.
3 Thomas Haughton Wakefield born 31 Dec 1824.
4 Jane Marian Wakefield born 14 Jun 1831 married widower John Grubb
Richardson in 1853 at Ballytore Meeting House. John was the owner of
the Bessbrook Spinning Company Ltd in 1863 and died in 1890.
5 Jemima Wakefield born 12 Aug 1836. As second daughter she married
James Fenell of Glenlee, Co Tipperary on 20 Sep 1865. James was the son
of the late William Fennel of Rehill, Co Tipperary.
2 Jacob Goff Wakefield born 21 Mar 1797.
3 Eliza Wakefield born 8 May 1798 died 8 Sep 1798.
4 Hannah Wakefield born 15 Sep 1799. As eldest daughter she married William Bell
of Belfast at the Friends meeting House, Moyallen in April 1820.
5 Mary Phelps Wakefield born 3 Aug 1801.
6 Jane Sandwith Wakefield born 13 Jan 1804 married Thomas Christy junior of
London on 16 Jul 1829. Jane died 16 Mar 1888 at Bloomfield. Brooklands,
Chelmsford.
7 Charlotte Wakefield born 18 Feb 1805. As third daughter she married James G
Richardson of Lisburn on 20 Oct 1831 at the Friends Meeting House, Moyallen.
8 Charles Fredrick Wakefield second son born 12 Jan 1807. He married Anne
Moore on 12 Sep 1839 at the Friends’ Meeting House, Clonmel. Anne was the
daughter of James Moore of Clonmel. They had no children. Anne died 21 Mar 1893
at Lurgan. Charles died 28 Apr 1898 at Corcrain, Portadown and was interred at
Moyallen Quaker Graveyard.
9 Isabella Nicholson Wakefield born 27 Jun 1808. As third daughter she married
Charles Lloyd Harford, an iron master of Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire on 18 Jul 1839
at Moyallen Meeting House. Isabella died 29 Jul 1890 at Cheltenham.
10 Sophia Wakefield born circa 1810 died 22 Aug 1835.
11 Elizabeth Wakefield born 8 Oct 1811 living with her father in Newton Abbot in 1861.
She married Charles Prideaux of Plymouth on 20 Apr 1864 at the Meeting House,
Torquay. Elizabeth died at Plymouth on 25 Aug 1865.
