Charles Wilkinson Jones was the son of Charles Jones and Elizabeth Douglas. He successfully
claimed the dormant titles and became the 4th Baron Jones of Navan, Co Meath and 4th
Viscount Ranelagh on 16 Oct 1759. He married Sarah Montgomery on 6 Jan 1761. Sarah was
the daughter of Thomas Montgomery, MP for Lifford and Mary Franklin. He was appointed
Keeper of the Great Seal in 1764 during the absence of the Lord Chancellor. They initially had
a house in Kildare Street and moved to Duke Street. Their country residence was Fairyland at
Monkstown. He was church warden of Monkstown in 1766 and again in 1788/9. He was a
member of the Dublin Ballast Office, the Blackrock Association and the Charitable Musical
Society. He was chairman of Committees to the House of Lords. He put the house and upwards
of 100 acres at Monkstown up for let in 1789. He held the office of Constable of Athlone Castle
from 1765 until his death. He died on 20 Apr 1797 and the house and lands at Monkstown
were put up for sale by the Sheriff of County Dublin as there were a number of judgements
against him. However, the house and 14 acres appears to have remained in the hands of the
family as his son John lived there until his death in 1835. The house was put up for auction and
the contents sold in 1839.
1 Hon Charles Jones, born 29 Oct 1761 graduated Trinity. He joined the Navy and attained
the rank of captain. He was on board the Charlemont Packet when in sunk in storms in
December 1790 but survived. He succeeded as 5th Viscount of Ranelagh in 1797. He
died a bachelor on 20 Dec 1800 on board his ship, the frigate Doris, in Plymouth Sound.
2 Hon Thomas Jones born 5 Feb 1763 baptised at Monkstown as second son on 4 Mar 1763.
He attained the rank of Major in the 66th Foot, Northumberland. He succeeded as 6th
Viscount of Ranelagh in 1800. He married Caroline Elizabeth Stephens on 21 Aug 1804 at
Fulham, London. Caroline was the daughter of Sir Philip Stephens, Bart. Caroline died at
her father’s house in London in 17 Jun 1805 aged 33.
1 Hon Caroline Jones born June 1805 who survived but 1 day.
He secondly married Caroline Louisa Lee Thompson on 11 Sep 1811 in London. Caroline
was the illegitimate and only daughter of Colonel Lee of Yorkshire. In 1868 he was a
witness in the trial of ‘Madame Rachel,' a notorious swindler. He died 4 Jul 1820. At
Ranelagh House, Fulham. His will mentions five further children to whom he is father -
Mary Ann, Sarah Antonia, Thomas Cowley, Thomas Edward and Louisa, all with the
surname Jones but not noted as Honourable. Caroline died on 25 Nov 1866 at Mayfield,
Sussex.
2 Hon Thomas Heron Jones eldest son born 9 Jan 1812 and succeeded as 7th
Viscount of Ranelagh on the death of his father in 1820. He joined the army in
1829 and fought in the first Carlist war. In 1834 it was announced that he had
died from a fall from his horse/or maybe in a dual, but this proved to be false
and it transpired he was just financially embarrassed. He attained the rank of
Lieutenant-Colonel in the 2nd South Middlesex Volunteers. He never married but
fathered a number of children including two daughters. He was appointed
Knight Commander, Order of the Bath, KCB in 1881. He died on 13 Nov 1885 and
the titles became extinct.
1 Alice Jones born circa 1858 married Clement Martin Le Breton on
21 Aug 1877 at St Peter’s, Eaton Square. Clement was the son of Rev
William Corbet Le Breton, the Dean of Jersey and Emelia Davis Martin. He
was also the brother of Lillie Langtry. They divorced in 1899 due to her
affair with John Richard Brinsley Norton, Lord Grantly, who she married
after her divorce.
2 Emily Jones youngest daughter of Viscount Ranelagh married Hon Mark
Francis Napier on 30 May 1878 at the registrar’s office, Mount Street and on
5 Jun at All Saint’s Church, Fulham.
3 Hon Barbara Jones eldest daughter born circa 1814. She married Count Johann
Bernhard Graf von Rechberg und Rothenlöwen on 26 Jul 1834 at Stuttgart. She
separated from her husband and died in London in May 1894.
4 Hon Sarah Jones, youngest daughter died at Bath on 15 Sep 1824.
5 Hon Arthur Jones born circa 1818 died 28 Jun 1820 at Fulham.
3 Hon Richard Jones third son born 24 Mar 1764. He married Sophia Gildart on 14 Sep 1785
at Wigan. Sophia was the only daughter and sole heiress of the late John Gildart of Blackley
Hurst, Lancashire. Sophia died on 27 Nov 1803 and Richard died in November 1804 at Derry.
His burial was at Derry with full military honours.
4 Hon Mary Jones born circa 1766. She married Hon Robert Molesworth, son of Robert
Molesworth, 5th Viscount Molesworth of Swords on 27 Sep 1793 in Dublin. Robert, a
commissioner of revenue died on 12 Mar 1814 at Belfield, Co Dublin aged 45. Mary died on
2nd Apr 1839 at Auburn Cottage, Kingstown.
1 Son Molesworth born 1796 at Monkstown, the residence of her father.
2 Henrietta Sarah Molesworth died 9 Feb 1834 at East Sheen.
3 Mary Annette Molesworth youngest daughter born February 1807 died 27 Feb 1831.
5 Hon son Jones born 9 Jan 1768 at their house in Kildare Street.
6 Hon Margaret Jones baptised at Monkstown on 4 Jun 1769.
7 Hon John Jones born circa 1872 attended Rev Burrowes school in Blackrock. He joined the
army and attained the rank of major in the 10th Hussars. He married Elizabeth Cane on
12 Mar 1808 (ML). Elizabeth was the daughter of Major Edward Cane, army agent of
Dawson Street and The Place, Donnybrook. John was a founder member of the Brunswick
Constitution Club of the County of Dublin. He died on 17 Jul 1835 at Ranelagh House,
Monkstown.
8 Hon Richard Jones baptised at Monkstown on 12 Feb 1777.
9 Hon Alexander Montgomery Jones born 9 Mar 1778. He joined the Royal Navy and attained
the rank of Admiral. He married Caroline Palmer in September 1807. Caroline was the
daughter of the late Thomas Martin Palmer of Hambledon. Caroline died on 28 Nov 1858
aged 68 at Cheltenham. He was heir presumptive to the Ranelagh title. He died as sixth,
youngest and last surviving son on 8 Jan 1862 at Cheltenham. He predeceased the 7th
Viscount.
1 Caroline Sarah Sophia Jones born circa 1811. She married Henry de Vismes, Vicomte
de Vismes, son of Elisée William de Vismes, Comte de Vismes on 15 May 1834 at
Exmouth. She died 5 Aug 1877 at Bedford.
1 Philip C M de Vismes lost in the waters of Japan during a typhoon on 9 Sep 1860.
2 Alexander Montgomery Jones eldest son 1 born 13 Sep 1812. He was heir presumptive
to the Ranelagh titles on the death of his father. He died a bachelor on 5 Apr 1883 at
Cheltenham. He predeceased the 7th Viscount.
3 Robert Molesworth Jones second son born circa 1814. He died a bachelor on
11 Aug 1856 at Columbo.
4 Mary Jones younger daughter married the Rev John Williams, Vicar of Gringley on
19 May 1860 at All Saints, Langham Place, London.
5 Herbert Montgomery Jones youngest son born circa 1831 died 11 Dec 1851 at
Cheltenham.
