Richard Verschoyle of Stillorgan Park
Richard Verschoyle born June 1809 son of John Verschoyle and his second wife heiress
Margaret Stuart, the daughter of Hamilton and Margaret Stuart of Dromespill. His father was
of Stillorgan Park and Castle Shanaghan, Co Donegal. He was nephew to James Verschoyle,
Bishop of Killala. He was educated at Trinity College, took Holy orders and ordained in 1832.
Richard married Margaret Davenport Lloyd on 1 Jul 1841 at St Peters Church Dublin.
Margaret was the youngest daughter of the late Rev Bartholomew Lloyd, Provost of Trinity
College, Dublin. His marriage settlement gave him lands in Donegal. Margaret died 6 Dec 1851
at Greenhills. Richard was incumbent of Beleek and was promoted to the living of Carlingford in
1852.
1 Eleanor Verschoyle born 13 Nov 1842 at Mountnorris, Co Armagh informant of her
father’s death and living at Tullycleigh in 1901. Eleanor died unmarried on 15 Oct 1934
at Worthing.
2 Richard Lloyd Verschoyle eldest son born 23 Jan 1846 at Mount Norris adopted a sea
faring life. In the Spring of 1865, he sailed from England on his third voyage to Australia
as a ships officer onboard the Rosalyn Castle. On the return of the vessel to England his
father was notified by the captain that Richard had disappeared the day before the ship
sailed back from Sydney. Post office notices in Australian Newspapers at the time noted
that his post was awaiting collection. He was declared dead in 1915.
Richard secondly married Emily Edwards on 12 Apr 1853 at St Anne’s Church. Emily was living at
7 Nassau Street and was the eldest daughter of James Kynaston Edwards of Old Court, Co
Wicklow. His brother Hamilton officiated. Richard died 11 Sep 1895 and left 9k in personal
estate. Emily died 15 Mar 1906 at Tullycleagh House. Her daughter Emily the informant.
3 John Hamilton Verschoyle second son born 1 Jun 1854 at Baggot Street. He joined the
2nd Battalion Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry and fought at Tel el Kabir. He married
Florence Lyla Williams in 1882 in London.
1 Gladys Louise Verschoyle born 16 Mar 1884 in Africa.
2 Florence Emily Beryl Verschoyle 13 Jul 1885 at Sloperton Lodge, Killiney.
He secondly married Isolde Emilie Hahn in 1903; she was 25 years his junior. He retired
from the army as a Brevet Colonel in 1911. He joined his old regiment on the outbreak
of WW1 and served in France and Salonika. They lived at 24 Park Mansions, Bath,
Somerset. John died at Bath in November 1928.
3 May Hope Verschoyle born 10 May 1904 in Cape Town.
4 Emily Margaret Elizabeth Verschoyle born circa 1855 died unmarried on 18 Jan 1942 at
St John’s Wood, London late of Worthing. She left 7k in personal estate.
5 James Kynaston Edwards Verschoyle 9 Aug 1858 at Baggot Street. He was with the Indian
Civil Service. He married Edith Armour in London in 1899. He died 17 Mar 1907 in Egypt.
6 Stuart Joseph Verschoyle born 24 Jun 1860 at Baggot Street at Baggot Street. He was a
tea and rubber broker and married Enid Norah Worgan on 18 Feb 1893 at St Andrew’s
Church Darjeeling. Stuart died at his residence, Tullycleagh, Ballinamallard, Co Fermanagh
on 1 Sep 1926 and left 116k in personal estate. Enid died in London in 1959.
1 Terence Trevor Hamilton Verschoyle born 9 Sep 1894 at Darjeeling enlisted on the
outbreak of WW1. He was with the 5th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and was
wounded in action at the Dardanelles.
7 Beresford St George Verschoyle born 14 Jul 1863 educated at Portora Royal School and the
Royal Naval Academy in Southsea. He married Ethel Janet Plews on 14 Jun 1900 at Holy
Trinity Church, Darlington. Ethel was the fourth surviving daughter of the late T R M Plews
of The Woodlands, Darlington. He was a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers and
worked initially in Argentina and was later appointed general manager of the Egyptian
State Railways and retired circa 1921. Beresford died in 100th year in December 1962 at
Worthing.
1 Richard Plews Verschoyle born July 1901 in Belgrano, Argentina died in a fall in the
French Alps on 15 Aug 1933. His father was his executor.
