John Townsend born circa 1826 son of William Townsend, a labourer. He was living in Lurgan
and was a sergeant in the 20th Regiment of Foot when he married Jane Connolly at the
Registrar’s Office Lurgan. Jane was also living in Lurgan and was the daughter of James
Connolly, a coachman. John an army pensioner worked as a labourer and died 10.10.1891
at Mountmellick. Jane was living alone at Harbour Street in 1901. She died 13.06.1908 at
Harbour Street, Mountmellick, her daughter Kate the informant.
1 William Townsend born circa 1859 a clerk in Tullamore married Kate Rennicks daughter
of James Rennicks on 07.11.1888 at Ardbraccan Parish Church, Meath. William died on
21.10.1897 aged 38 years at Church Street, Tullamore.
2 Catherine Townsend born 16.10.1864 at Harbour Street, Mountmellick. Kate was
working as a housemaid at Craigmore in Blackrock in 1901 for the Hogg family. Her
address is given as Mountmellick when her mother died in 1908. She was working as a
housemaid for Alfred Hamilton Ormsby Hamilton of Killiney Castle in 1926. Kate, a
housekeeper died a spinster on 28.01.1947 at Drumcondra Road, late of Killiney Castle*.

4 Thomas Townsend born 15.10.1868 at Dublin Road, Naas, Kildare.
5 Edward Townsend born 02.06.1870 at 3 Healys Court, Irwin Street, Dublin. Edward
joined the Royal Garrison regiment on 26.11.1901 in Dublin. Edward a farm labourer was
boarding with the Hickey family in 1911 in Mountmellick.
6 Rachel Townsend born on 25.03.1872 at Harbour Street, Mountmellick. Rachel was living
at 34 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 1901 when Edward signed up.
7 Jane Townsend born 07.11.1874 at Acragar, Mountmellick married Peter Byrne of
Ballycollinbeg son of Michael Byrne on 01.10.1904 at the Registrar’s Office, Mountmellick.

8 Ellen Townsend born 17.02.1877 at Foundry Street, Mountmellick and died on 25.02.1877
aged 9 days at same place.
9 Arthur Townsend born 28.11.1878 at Foundry Street, Mountmellick. Arthur was serving with
the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1901 when Edward signed up.
10 George Townsend youngest son born 02.03.1882 at Mountmellick. George boarding with
the Lynch family in Kilnacash in 1911. George of the Highland Light Infantry died of wounds
received in action on 03.03.1915 aged 33 years at Bethune and is buried in France.
11 Harriet Townsend born 29.01.1885 at Mountmellick and died 23.11.1885 aged 10 months
same place.
*In 1937 Dun Laoghaire Burrough Council purchased Killiney Castle and it’s 47 acres for use as a
public park. An offer was made for the house, outbuildings and orchards on 8 acres for 2k shortly
after they purchased it but this fell through. Michael O’Heeney, Deputy Keeper of Irish Antiquities
in the National Museum rented the property from the Borough Council. The Society for Irish Church
Missions for Roman Catholics were interested in purchasing it in 1945 but this offer also fell through.
By 1947 it was operating as a hotel run by Patrick Keenan.
