Charles Hawkes Todd born circa 1784 was a medical doctor. He married Elizabeth Bentley in
May 1804 at the residence of James Henthorn in St Andrew’s Street, Dublin. Elizabeth was
the daughter of Captain Robert Bentley of the HEIC. Charles was surgeon to the Penitentiary
for young Criminals in Smithfield and later to the Richmond General Penitentiary. He was
secretary to the Commissioners for the Erection of Lunatic Asylums. He was professor of
Anatomy and Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeon and president in 1821. Charles died on
19 Mar 1826 at 3 Kildare Street and is buried at St James' Churchyard. He was survived by his
widow and fifteen children. Memorial plaque in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Elizabeth died
12 Jan 1862 at Silveracre, Rathfarnham the residence of her son, James. She is buried at St
James' Churchyard.
1 James Henthorn Todd born 23 Apr 1805 at St Andrew’s Street, Dublin graduated Trinity
College and was later a fellow. He was an archaeologist and translator of ancient Celtic
manuscripts and president of the Royal Irish Academy. He was one the founders of St
Columba’s College. He lived at Vergemount from 1843 to 1854. He died unmarried on
28 Jun 1869 at Silveracre, Rathfarnham.
2 Elizabeth Hawkes Todd born December 1807 at St Andrew’s Street married John Clarke
Crosthwaite on 2 Jul 1833 at St Peter’s Church.
3 Alicia Maria Todd second daughter born 2 Apr 1809 at Andrews Street. She married
William Connor on 21 Feb 1833 at St Peter’s, Dublin. William was an MD and the son of
Edward Connor of Summer Hill. Alicia died a widow at the Vicarage, West Bromwich on
1 Jan 1892.
4 Robert Bentley Todd second son born circa 1810 in Dublin graduated Trinity College. He
was an MD of Parliament Street, London and married Elizabeth Mary Hart at Hessle by
Hull Church on 20 Dec 1836 and they had at least four children. Elizabeth was the
daughter of the late James (Henry) Herriot Hart of Tenerife. Robert died in London on
30 Jan 1860.
5 Andrew Gillmor Todd born circa 1811. He married Dorothea (Dora) Morton on 25 Sep 1851
at Newmarket Church, Cork. Dora was the eldest daughter of the Rev James Morton. He
was rector of Clonmeen and they lived at Rockview, Cecilstown. He died at lower
Pembroke Street on 29 Mar 1869.

6 Anna Todd born circa 1812 died a spinster at Wellington Road on 2 Apr 1877 and is buried
at Mount Jerome.
7 Charles Hawkes Todd fourth son born 11 Nov 1813 admitted Kings Inns. He married Letitia
Elizabeth Potts at St Nicholas, Brighton on 5 Aug 1872. Loetitia (sic) was the only daughter
of the late Rev John Henry Potts of the Diocese of Armagh and his wife Mary. He was a JP
and QC and lived at Silveracre, Rathfarnham where Letitia died 9 Oct 1891 aged 58 leaving
15k in personal estate. Charles died at Silveracre, Rathfarnham on 5 Mar 1894. He left 23K
in personal estate.
8 Margaret Gillmore Todd born circa 1817 married John Hart 13 May 1845 at Monkstown Church.
They moved to Australia and had at least seven children. John was a mariner, merchant and
parliamentarian. He was premier of South Australia for a couple of months in 1865 and 1870.
In 1870, he was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George and died
28 Jan 1873. Margaret died a widow on 14 Feb 1876 at Glanville Hall, Port Adelaide, South
Australia.
1 Elizabeth Sarah Hart eldest daughter married Henry Brook Dobbin of Armagh at St
Stephen’s Church Dublin on 3 Jul 1867.
2 Mary Hart third daughter married Henry H Walters 14 Oct 1868 at Port Adelaide.
9 William Gowan Todd born April 1817 at Kildare Street graduated Trinity and took Holy orders.
He converted to Catholicism and became a Roman Catholic priest. He founded and managed
St Mary's Orphanage, Blackheath, initially taking destitute children into his house. Canon Todd
died unmarried on 24 Jul 1877 at Park House, Blackheath.
10 Jane Stanley Todd circa 1818 was living at Vergemount House and married Michael King at
Donnybrook Church on 7 Feb 1850. Michael was a solicitor and the son of Michael King. Jane
died at Dungivan, Co Londonderry on 6 Nov 1890.
11 Caroline Stanley Todd sixth daughter born circa 1819. As youngest daughter she was living at
Vergemount House and married Rev Arthur William Edwards on 5 Aug 1852 at St Mary’s
Church, Donnybrook. Edward was Prebendary of Donoghnire and chaplain to the Lord Bishop
of Limerick. Caroline died a widow on 17 Jan 1879 at 40 Wellington Road.
12 Arthur Bentley Todd fifth son born April 1822 at Kildare Street. He was a crown solicitor for the
counties of Roscommon Leitrim and Sligo. He died a bachelor on 9 Aug 1874 at Lower Baggot
Street.
13 Mark Stanley Todd, born circa 1821 was an MD. He was an assistant surgeon with HM 86th
Royal Regiment and married Elizabeth Jane Archer Jerome on 26 Apr 1847 at St Mary’s Church,
Poona. Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Joseph Jerome. He was a surgeon with HM 27th
Regiment and died in Umballa, Haryana, India on 10 Apr 1860. He is remembered on the family
headstone in Mount Jerome.

buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Caroline Stanley Todd born 23 Dec 1858 at Umballa.
14 Richard Cooper Todd born circa 1823. He was an MD and staff surgeon with the 99th Regiment
of Foot and married Emma Newland on 12 Mar 1861 at Rathfarnham Church. Emma was the
only surviving daughter of the late Rev Thomas Newland. Emma died of consumption at the
Royal Military Infirmary on 25 Aug 1862.
He was with the 60th Regiment and secondly married Emily Kate Wilson on 2 Sep 1863 at Christ
Church, Bray. Emily was the daughter of the late Thomas Wilson of Westbury, Stillorgan.
Deputy Surgeon General Todd died 7 Dec 1890 at Folkestone, Kent.
15 Armstrong Todd youngest son born circa 1824. He was an MD and married Frances Alicia (Fanny)
Kinehan on 10 Aug 1852 at St Peter's Church and they had at least seven children. Fanny was the
daughter of Robert Henry Kinehan. Armstrong published papers on the safe use of chloroform
and was a founder of St Peter Hospital for stone in London. He died in Camberwell House Asylum,
Surrey on 3 Jun 1873. Probate to his wife Frances who was living at Montpelier Parade.
