George Thompson born circa 1770 worked for Williams Speers. He was a wine and water
importer of 18 Eustace Street and married Elizabeth Barclay in 1795. Elizabeth was the great
granddaughter of Robert Barclay, theologian and author of ‘The Apology for the People called
Quakers'. George died by his own hand on 3 Jul 1831 at Ely Place by hanging himself from the
bedpost while the family were at a church service. He was buried at St Peters. Elizabeth died
9 Jun 1844 at Richmond House, Rathmines and was buried at St Peters.
1 Henry Thompson born circa 1802. He was a wine merchant After the death of his father
he removed the business from Temple Lane to 28 Eustace Street. He was living at 13
Fitzwilliam Place and later traded as Thompson & D’Olier, wine merchants. He married
Letitia Adelaide Black on 4 Aug 1835 at Belfast. Letitia was the daughter of George Black
and Ellen Stewart of Stranmillis, Co Antrim. Henry became a member of the RDS in 1839.
They lived at Greenmount, Ballinteer Road from 1843. They had moved to Clonard by
1853 and gave up their country house in 1876. Henry won numerous prises for fruit,
plants and vegetables at the RHS with the help of his gardener James Clews and Steward
Mr Hanley. Letitia was a fund raiser for the Eye & Ear on Stephen’s Green. Henry died
19 Apr 1885 and left 27k in personal estate. Lætitia died 22 May 1886 aged 77 at
Fitzwilliam Place. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 George Black Thompson born October 1837 at Fitzwilliam Place baptised at St Peters.
He graduated BA Trinity College. He was a wine merchant and died unmarried on
8 Feb 1923 at 13 Fitzwilliam Place. Edmund D’Olier of Knocklinn, Bray the informant.
He was buried with his parents at Mount Jerome.
2 Stillborn son Thompson born March 1839 at Fitzwilliam Place.
2 Anne Thompson born circa 1802 died a spinster on 16 Dec 1865 Croagh Rectory, Rathkeale,
Co Limerick. She left 2k in personal estate. Probate to Edmund D’Olier of Eustace Street.
3 Elizabeth Thompson youngest daughter married Rev William Lamb Archer on 3 Nov 1829 at St
Peter's Church, Dublin. William was the widower of Olivia Guinness with at least five children.
He was the vicar of Newcastle, Co Wicklow and by 1846 he was rector of Croagh, Co Limerick.
An attempt was made on William’s life in 1861. He died on 11 Sep 1870 at Croagh Rectory aged
87. Elizabeth died at Woolston, Southampton on 10 Aug 1878.
1 Elizabeth Ann Archer born circa 1831 married Rev Abraham Isaac on 4 Jul 1860 at
Croagh Church.
2 George Thompson Archer born circa 1832 worked for Peninsular & Oriental Company
Services. He married Mary Anne Elizaeth Stoney on 4 Oct 866 at Templeharry Church.
He died onboard the SS Hydaspes on 21 Apr 1875 near Suez.
3 Charles Tottenham Arch born circa 1834 died 14 May 1842 at Liverpool.
4 Henry C E Archer born circa 1836 died at Mooltan India on 20 Jun 1872.
5 Selina Harriet born circa 1838 married Wellington Shegog on 18 Mar 1856. Wellington
was a solicitor and the fourth son of the late Richard Shegog of Cottage, Drogheda.
6 Erina Christina Cunningham Archer born circa 1840 married J D Macdonald, MD, RN on
13 Feb 1878 at Hound Church, Hants.
7 Isabella Sarah Archer youngest daughter born circa 1844 married Augustus Frederick
Turner on 16 Jul 1863 at Croagh Parish Church. Augustus was a staff surgeon and the
youngest son of Major Charles Turner late Madras Army.
8 Robert Archer born circa 1845 died at Nulla, Queensland on 9 Jul 1867.
4 George Thompson second son born 21 Jul 1806 educated at Luxemburg and Trinity
College was admitted Kings Inns. He died on 8 Jun 1884 at the Hotel National Lucerne,
Switzerland late of 10 Ely Place, Dublin.
