Thomas Winder a seed merchant of Liverpool married Phoebe page on 11 Nov 1830 at St
Michaels, Upper Pitt Street, Liverpool. Phoebe was the daughter of Margaret Armstrong and
her second husband, the late Thomas Trent Page of Pleasant Street, Liverpool. In 1841
Thomas was a bookkeeper living at Pleasant Street, Liverpool with their four children and
his mother in law Margaret was living with them. By 1846 Thomas was manager of the Cork
Steam Ship Company based at Penrose’s Quay in Cork. Thomas died 20 Nov 1851 at
Montpellier Terrace Cork.
1 Thomas Winder baptised 14 Oct 1831 at the Church for the Blind, Liverpool. He was
an accountant working for the Direct Cork & Limerick Railway company living at
Summer Hill Terrace in Cork when he married Sara Roche on 14 Feb 1865 at St Anne's
Church Shandon, Cork. Sara was living at Mount Verdon and was the daughter of the
late James Roche, druggist. By 1876 he was secretary to the Cork Steam Packet
Company. Thomas was appointed chapelwarden of St Luke's in 1869 and churchwarden
in 1872, a role which he remained in until his death. He died 4 Mar 1902 at Mount
Verdon and his son Arthur arranged for a window to be erected in his memory at St
Luke's Church in 1903. It depicted Peter and Jesus walking on water. Sarah died on
7 Aug 1909 late of Mount Verdon.
1 Thomas Edward Winder born 14 Jan 1866 at 5 Summerhill Terrace, Cork educated
at Wye Bridge Grammar School took Holy orders. He married Emily Dudgeon on
17 Jun 1893 at All Saints, Blackrock. Emily was the daughter of Henry James
Dudgeon of The Priory, Stillorgan. He was succentor at St Patrick’s Cathedral.
They lived at Hermitage from 1894 to 1895 and then moved to Carrickslaney in
Carlow by 1901 and then on to Kilkenny where he was Rector of the Parish of
Fiddown. Thomas was appointed Dean of Ossory in 1908. He tendered his
resignation as Dean in 1923 due to ill health. He was presented with the living of
Ulcombe, Canterbury in 1923 by the Marquis of Ormonde. He died 12 Jun 1926 at
Winchester. Emily died on All Saint’s Day, 1 Nov 1928 at Winchester.
1 Naomi Mary Winder born 24 Mar 1895 at Hermitage, Cross Avenue. She
married William Willoughby Bernard Faussett on 17 Dec 1918 at the St Canice’s
Cathedral Church, Kilkenny. William was the son of William Willoughby Bernard
Faussett, late county inspector, RIC. They had one child and were divorced by
1939. Naomi died 25 Dec 1973 at Hollypark, Pallas, Limerick.
2 Arthur Wellesley Winder born 7 Dec 1867 at 5 Summer Hill. He graduated LL D from
the Royal University of Ireland in 1890 and was awarded the silver medal of the
Incorporated Law Society. He was in practice with TJ Babington with whom he had
served his apprenticeship. He set up in practice in his own in 1899. He married Ada
Mary Noblett on 30 Jan 1907 at Lewes in Sussex. Ada was the only daughter of
Colonel Edward Abbott Noblett late of the Royal Irish Regiment of the Wallands
Crescent, Lewes. He was awarded an OBE in 1919 for his work as director of Red
Cross and VAD services in the City and County of Cork. Ada died on 4 May 1926 in
France. Arthur was a widower living in Hove in 1939 and died at Hove in Sussex on
27 Feb 1949.
3 James Herbert Roche Winder born 18 Aug 1872 at Mount Verdon, Wellington Road.
He served in the South African War, 1900-02. He married Esther Amabel Gardiner
at Marylebone on 17 Sep 1903. Esther was the daughter of Edward Bennett
Gardiner. He attained the rank of major in the RAMC. He was living at the
Headquarters Lahore District (Medical Branch) Dalhousie, India in 1921. James died
on 12 Nov 1947 in Oxted. Esther died in London on 18 Jan 1964.
2 William Winder born 28 Sep 1833 in Liverpool not listed on the census of 1841 as living
with the family.
3 John Winder born 28 May 1835 in Liverpool living with his family in 1841.
4 Edmund Winder born 31 May 1837 in Liverpool. He was a master mariner living with his
aunt Mary Armstrong at Everton in 1871 and was based on the Ss Jamaican, Wallasey,
Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1881. He worked for the West India and Pacific Steam
Navigation Company. He died a bachelor at Mount Verdon, the home of his brother
Thomas in Cork on 17 Apr 1895.
5 Ellen Winder born 1839 in Liverpool. As only daughter she married Edward Mason Hunt
of New South Wales on 21 Jan 1865 at St Luke’s Church, Shandon. Edward was a barrister
and the only son of Edward and Hannah Paget Hunt. They moved to NSW and lived at ‘The
Hermitage’ at Vaucluse. Edward died in 1899 and Ellen died in 1909.
