Robert Tedcastle born circa 1801 at Dumfriesshire. He was of Kendal, Dumfriesshire and married
Elizabeth Black on 11 Oct 1822 at Annan. They ran the Buck Inn in Langholm. The family were
living at High Street, Langholm, Dumfriesshire in 1841. Elizabeth died in February 1845 at
Langholm leaving ‘numerous children to mourn her loss’. Robert was dead by 1858 and their
children went to Ireland.
1 Robert Tedcastle born in England was baptised 7 Jan 1825 at Dumfriesshire. He moved to
Ireland to work in a coal business. He was the Irish agent for Carlisle Blenkinsopp at St
John Rogersons Quay in 1847 and at Burgh Quay by 1848. He married Mary Ann Septima
Marchbank on 11 Aug 1855. Witnesses Thomas Tedcastle. Mary was the daughter of late
Robert Marchbank. Margaret was living at Kingstown and was a governess. He was ship
owner by 1861 and imported coal into Dublin. He was trading as Messrs Robert Tedcastle
& Co by 1862 at Crofton Place Kingstown and Great Brunswick Street working with his
brothers James, John and George and he was the senior partner. He commissioned the
Emerald schooner to be built for him in 1870, the Magnet a screw steamer in 1874, the
brigantine Alyesford in 1877 and the steamship Toiler 1879. He was one of Dublin’s most
successful businessmen with his main office at 21 Great Brunswick St in Dublin and his
residence was at Herbert Road in Sandymount. In 1872 he started The Tedcastle Line, a
passenger, goods, and life stock transit service between Dublin & Liverpool and in 1885
purchased the Whitehaven Steam Navigation Company which served routes from Liverpool
to Whitehaven and Maryport. He lived at Roebuck Grove in 1872 and moved to Marlay in
1876 after the death of David Fitzgerald. Mary died at Marley on 30 Jun 1880 aged 57.
Letters of administration were granted to her husband.
1 Robert Marchbanks (Marjoribanks) Tedcastle eldest son born circa 1858. He was
educated at Chester. He married Margaret Jane Hannah and they lived on the Isle
of Man on 4 Sep 1887 at Braddan. Robert died at Bristol on 30 Aug 1895.
1 Robert Joseph Marjoribanks Tedcastle born 1888 in the Island of Man. He
married Ann and died at Smethwick in 1952.
2 Margaret E C Tedcastle born circa 1889 in the Isle of Man staying with her
grandfather Robert at Marlay in 1901 and 1911.
3 Axel George Tedcastle born 1891 in the Isle of Man staying with his grandfather
Robert at Marlay in 1901 and 1911 and emigrated to Australia in 1911 where
he purchased 900 acres of land at Glen Elgin, Toolern Vale. He enlisted with the
5th Australian Infantry Battalion in 1914. He survived the war and returned to
Australia. He married twice and had two children.
2 Joseph Studholme Tedcastle born circa 1862 married Elizabeth Frazer Graham at
Hutton Parish Church in the Dryfe Valley on 16 Oct 1888. Elizabeth was the elder
daughter of John Graham of Shaw, Lockerbie. The lived at Tierhogan in Co Laois.
Joseph died at Hastings on 29 Sep 1908. Elizabeth died 9 Jul 1942.
1 John Graham Tedcastle born 25 Sep 1894 at Hybla, Monesterevin staying with
his grandfather Robert at Marlay in 1901.
2 Elizabeth Mary born 10 Feb 1896 at Hybla, Monesterevin staying with her
grandfather Robert at Marlay in 1901.
3 Josephine Marjoriebanks Tedcastle born 2 Nov 1898 at Hybla, Mountmellick.
She died 3 Jan 1924, aged 25 years and is remembered at the family grave at
Mount Jerome.
4 George Watson Tedcastle born 25 Apr 1900 at Hybla, Mountmellick.
Robert secondly married Margaret Calvert Black in 1881 at Carlisle and he was appointed to
the Dublin Docks Board the same year. Margaret died at Marley 8 Oct 1896 aged 57 and was
buried at Whitechurch. In 1897 Robert Tedcastle & Co joined with a Dublin coal merchant J
McCormick to create Tedcastle McCormick & Co Ltd, with Robert as chairman operating from
Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. His ships operated from their berths opposite his premises on Sir
John Rogerson’s Quay. Robert died at Marlay on the 19th of May 1919 and was buried at
Whitechurch. He left 361k in personal estate in Ireland and 189k in England. The Tedcastle
Line was absorbed into the British & Irish Steam Company in 1919.
The coal business and Oil business became Tedcastle Oil Products (later TOP) was taken over
by John P Rehill in 1950.

3 Thomas Tedcastle born in England baptised 28 May 1827 Dumfriesshire. Thomas worked in
a warehouse and lived at 49 Upper George’s Street. He married Susan Agnes Godkin on
5 Aug 1858 at the Registrar’s Office, Kingstown. Susan was the daughter of Matthew Godkin,
a grocer. They moved to Birmingham by 1871 and Thomas worked as a commercial clerk.
Thomas died in Birmingham in 1872. Susan moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1901 and died
7 Jul 1911 at Rock Ferry.
1 Susan Agnes Tedcastle born 21 Aug 1860 at Heytesbury Street baptised at St Nicholas'
(Without), Dublin.
2 Robert Longfield Tedcastle born 8 May 1862 at Heytesbury Street baptised at St
Nicholas’. Robert died at Rock Ferry 23 Jan 1892.
3 Christine Mary Tedcastle born circa 1867 in Ireland died unmarried on 26 Octo 1941
at Westwood Park Institution, London.
4 Margaret Tedcastle born circa 1830 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. She married Richard Gosson
on 15 Feb 1858 at Kingstown Registrar’s Office.
5 James Tedcastle born circa 1832 at Langholm. He was a merchant living in Kingstown and
married Jane Bullock on 25 Apr 1876 at Kingstown Registrar’s Office. They lived at York
House Kingstown and John had retired by 1901. John died 16 Jan 1904 at 30 York Road and
was buried at Deansgrange.
1 Alison Lyon Tedcastle born 25 Aug 1877 born 1 Old Brighton, Kingstown was a
governess in 1901. Grace Alison Lyon Tedcastle married Leon Fedderson alias Leo
Nurnberg on 26 Mar 1903 at the Presbyterian Church in Kingstown. Leon was the son
of Carl Rudolph Feddersen of Copenhagen and worked in insurance.

6 John Tedcastle born circa 1834 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was a coal merchant and
married Dorothy Bell on 7 Aug 1866 at Holy Trinity Church, Carlisle. John died at Villa Nuova
Glenageary on 9 Mar 1873. Dorothy moved back to England and secondly married Thomas
Black, a coal merchant of Carlisle.
1 John Bell Tedcastle born 19 Nov 1870 died 24 Feb 1871 at Villa Nuova aged three
months.
2 Malcolm Tedcastle born 23 Dec 1872 living with his mother and stepfather in 1881. He
married Annie Dalzell in 1900 and was a shipbroker living in Wimbledon in 1901.
Malcolm died in 1957.
7 Elizabeth Tedcastle born circa 1836 Dumfriesshire, Scotland. She married William Cane
on 23 Dec 1871 at Monkstown Parish Church. William was a merchant and the son of
John Cane, a merchant. Elizabeth, a widow was visiting her sister in law Susan in 1901.
8 George Tedcastle born circa 1838 Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was living at Crofton Place,
Kingstown and married Anne Williams on 11 May 1871 at St Michael in the Hamlet Toxteth,
Liverpool. Ann was living at 82 Devonshire Road West and was the daughter of Thomas
Williams. They lived at Roebuck Grove from 1877 to 1881 and then moved to Alderley in
Glenageary. He also owned Sunning Hill and Dunluce next door to Alderley. He was a
director and active until his death of Messrs Tedcastle McCormick (a company formed in
1897 to take over the business of R Tedcastle and J McCormick, Coal merchants). Annie
died 23 Apr 1894 at Russell Square, London and was buried at Deansgrange. He was the
part owner of the S S Marlay which foundered of the coast close to the Bailey Lighthouse in
1903 with only one survivor. George died on 7 Oct 1920 at Alderley, Glenageary and was
buried at Deansgrange. His properties in Glenageary were put up for sale after his death.
He left personal estate of 40K in England.
1 Elizabeth Tedcastle born 11 Jul 1873 at Crofton House, Kingstown married Rev John
Oliver on 11 Aug 1908 at St Paul’s Church, Glenageary. John was the rector of Florence
Court, Enniskillen and the son of Thomas Stuart Oliver. He was later rector of Tallaght.

2 Thomas Williams Tedcastle eldest son born 11 Sep 1874 at Dunluce, Gleanageary.
He was a farmer living at Portarlington and married Kathleen Adelina Casey on
1 Jul 1908 at Termonfeckin Church. Kathleen was the daughter of the late Aeneas
Casey. They emigrated to Canada in 1909 and Thomas was a farmer in Manitoba.
He retired to Sussex where Kathleen died 19 Jan 1939 aged 62. Thomas died on
8 Apr 1952 at his home, Dovecote, Chyngton Gardens, Seaford, East Sussex.

3 Martha Williams (Mattie) Tedcastle second daughter born 1 Dec 1875 at Dunluce,
Glenageary. She married Thomas Lee on 1 Sep 1903 at St Paul’s Glenageary.
Thomas was a merchant and the son of Captain Thomas Lee of Liverpool. They
lived at Rock Ferry, Birkinhead.
1 Thomas Tedcastle Lee only son born 1904.
4 George Tedcastle born 11 Jul 1877 at Dunluce, Glenageary. He married Janet
Lilias Little on 3 Jun 1903 at Canouble, Dumfrieshire. Janet was the daughter
of the late Michael Little of Green Bank, Falmouth. George was a farmer living
at Tirhogar House, Portarlington in 1911 and he was living at Carraig Una,
Kilmacanogue in 1934.
1 Lilian Vernon Scott (Lilias) Tedcastle born at Hume Street on 22 Nov 1906.
She married Ross Archer Ross-Todd of Ballyshannon on 16 Jul 1934 at
St Brigid’s Kilbride, Co Wicklow. Ross was a sales man and the son of the
late Robert Ross-Todd, a solicitor. Lilias died 13 Jun 1970 and was buried
at Deansgrange and was buried with her parents in Deansgrange. Ross
died 21 Oct 1973 and was buried with his wife.
5 Lilian Mary Tedcastle born 29 Sep 1881 at Dunluce, Glenageary. She married
Arthur Frederick Hooper on 18 Sep 1908 at St Paul’s Monkstown. Arthur was a
brewery official managing the printing works and the son of the late Henry Hooper,
a chemist. They lived at Breffni Road Kingstown in 1911.
6 John Black Tedcastle youngest son born circa 1884. He was a farmer and married
Emily Constance Lewis on 24 Aug 1911 at the Presbyterian Church, Rock Ferry,
Birkenhead, Cheshire. Emily was the second daughter of John Lewis of Rock Ferry.
They lived at Kilmullen House Portarlington. John retired and Kilmullen House on
300 acres was put up for sale in 1953. John died 29 Sep 1962 at Rosetta, Station
Road, Portarlington. Emily died 26 Dec 1966 at the County Hospital Portlaoise late
of Rosetta.
9 Isabella Tedcastle born circa 1840 Dumfriesshire, Scotland. She married Alexander D
Stewart on 9 Nov 1872 at Rutland Square. Alexander was a merchant and the son of
Alexander Steward, a farmer. Isabella died 13 Jul 1922 and was buried at Whitechurch.
10 Infant son Tedcastle died at Langholm on 18 Mar 1844.
