Hone of Rosemount
Thomas Crosthwaite Hone baptised 29 Aug 1813 at Eustace Street son of Joseph Hone and
Mary Crosthwaite. Thomas was a clerk with Bank of Ireland. He married Lucretia Tardy on
1 Dec 1841 at Donnybrook. Lucretia (Lucy) was the eldest daughter of James Tardy and
niece of Rev George Richards. Lucy died a few days after her confinement on 28 Apr 1850
at Pembroke Road, Carlow. In 1857, Thomas a town commissioner and manager of the
Bank of Ireland in Carlow rescued a seven year old boy from the Barrow river after he had
fallen in. Thomas died on 16 Mar 1861 at Carlow and the 52 acre farm he owned just
outside Carlow was put up for sale.
1 Mary Hone born circa 1842 in Belfast married widower Joseph Swan Browne of
Knocklow, Wicklow on 20 Oct 1863 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Joseph was the son
of Major James Browne and Catherine Swan. Joseph died 30 Apr 1887 at
Marlborough Road, Kingstown late of Knocklow, Tullow and was buried at Coolkenno.
Mary died 15 Sep 1904 at Kingstown and left 4K in personal estate. Probate to her
nephew Joseph Brown Hone.
1 James Swan Browne only son born circa 1865 was a captain in the 2nd
Brabant’s Horse. He graduated TCD and was called to the bar in 1901. He
died 7 Apr 1902 at 3 Marlborough Road, Kingstown.
2 Joseph Hone born circa 1843 died at Pembroke, Carlow on 7 Dec 1852.
3 James Tardy Hone born 2 Feb 1845 baptised at Carlow. He served with the 13th
Hussars. James of St Doulaghs’ married Lucy Hone on 26 Apr 1871 at Clontarf
Church. Lucy was the daughter of Addison Hone of Rosevale, Raheny. James died
21 Jan 1881 at Beechy Park, Rathvilly, Co Carlow. He left 13K in personal estate,
probate to his brother in law Joseph Swan Browne.
1 Joseph Browne Hone eldest surviving son died at a private nursing home in
London on 8 May 1925.
4 Nathaniel Hone second son born 3 May 1847 Carlow. He married Jean Bell on the
8 Dec 1869 at Old Greyfriars, Edinburgh. Jean was the third daughter of John Bell of
the Fans, Earlston, Berwickshire. They moved to Rosemount in Booterstown and were
there until 1873. Nathaniel died 28 Aug 1880 at Prittlewell, Rochford, Southend.
Jean died 12 Jul 1890 at Greenlaw aged 41.
5 Anne Hone born 16 Jun 1848 baptised at Carlow. Annie died at Knocklow, Tullow.
6 Child Hone born in April 1850.
