Edward Sugden born 12 Feb 1771 baptised at St Clement Danes son of Richard Sugden, a
hairdresser and Charlotte Burtenshaw. He lived with Winifred Knapp, his housekeeper and
they had a number of children together. Edward was called to the bar in 1807 and was the
author of various important legal publications including the Law of Executors and
Administrators.
1 Richard Sugden eldest son was a lieutenant in HM 13th Regiment of Light Dragoons.
He died at Madras on 24 Jul 1828.
2 Edward Burtenshaw Sugden born 1804 baptised at St Pancras on 25 Dec 1808. As
eldest surviving son he died at Hampton on 11 Sep 1831.
3 Laura Sugden eldest daughter born 1806 baptised at St Pancras on 25 Dec 1808. She
married W T Jemmett, a barrister at St Pancras in September 1829.
4 Juliet Sugden born 1808 baptised at St Pancras on 25 Dec 1808. She married Kennett
Dixon on 1 Feb 1832 at St Pancras Church. Kennett of Tavistock Square was the eldest
son of Kennett Dixon of Finsbury Square.
Edward and Winifred married in Wales on 23 Dec 1808. Winifred was the only child of John
Lapp. He was MP for Weymouth from 1828 to 1831 and for St Mawes from 1831 to 1832. He
was appointed Solicitor General in 1829 and was knighted. He purchased Boyle Farm,
Thames Ditton in 1834. He was made Lord Chancellor of Ireland in Peel's first ministry, and
was sworn of the Privy Council on 15 Dec 1834. He resigned in March 1835 on the intimation
from the wife of the Lord Lieutenant (Lady Haddington), that - if a woman was not considered
in all respects eligible to be presented at St James’ Palace, then that woman would not be
received at the drawing room of Dublin Castle. He received a pension of 4k and they returned
to Boyle Farm. Queen Adelaide invited Lady Sugden to her first Drawing Room event on their
return to England.
Edward was elected Lord Chancellor again in 1841 and this time his wife was invited to the
Viceregal Lodge by Countess de Grey, wife of the Lord Lieutenant. He dismissed Lord ffrench
as a magistrate in 1843 for attending a repeal meeting, and followed up by dismissing a further
twenty magistrates for supporting the repeal movement. They lived at 16 St Stephen’s Green
and Edward resigned in 1846. In February 1852 Edward was appointed Lord Chancellor of
Great Britain, and raised to the peerage, as Lord St Leonards. They travelled to Ireland to see
their son Henry in Castleknock in 1853. Winifred died 19 May 1861 aged 78 at Boyle Farm.
Edward died at Boyle Farm, Thames Ditton on 29 Jan 1875. After his death his will was missing
but his daughter Charlotte was able to recollect the contents of this document as he read it
out loud each evening. He left 60k in personal estate and real estate of 3k acres. Her evidence
was ironically accepted given Sir Edward laws on Wills. Winifred and Edward are buried at St
Nicholas’ graveyard in Thames Ditton.
5 Frederick Sugden born circa 1810. As eldest surviving son he died 12 Sep 1844 at
Thames Ditton.
6 Henry Sugden born 13 Mar 1811 educated at Harrow and St Alban’s Hall, Oxford was
called to the Bar in 1837. He was secretary to his father, the Lord Chancellor from 1841.
As second surviving son, he married Marianne Cookson on the 1 Aug 1844 at Trinity
Church, Marylebone, London. His brother Frank officiated. Marianne was the only
surviving daughter of the late Colonel Cookson, of Neasham Hall, Durham and they lived
at Woodley Stillorgan from 1844 to 1847. Henry was appointed Registrar to the Court of
Chancery in 1846. He died on 20 Dec 1866 at Stapely House, Cheshire late of St James’
Terrace, Malahide. Marianne died aged 84 on 28 Feb 1908 at Wells.
1 Marianne Winfred Sugden born Nov 1845 at Woodley, Stillorgan. She died
unmarried on 12 Jan 1920 at Wells, Cheshire.
2 Edward Burtenshaw Sugden born 12 Aug 1847 at Woodley Park, Stillorgan baptised
at Thames Ditton on 22 Oct 1847. He was heir to the peerage and became the 2nd
Baron St Leonards on the death of his grandfather in 1875 but did not inherit his
money as he had a falling out with his grandfather. He was engaged twice before
marring Marianne Caroline Dashwood on 5 Dec 1876 at St Paul’s, Knightsbridge.
Marianne was the step daughter of Lord William Graham. Marianne was granted a
divorce in 1883 on the grounds of adultery and was granted custody of their only
child. He was convicted on indecent assault on Emma Cole, a servant girl in 1884.
He died on 20 Mar 1908 at Llanfair, Anglesea.
1 Harriet Marianne (Hilda) Sugden born 20 Aug 1878 married Lieutenant
Drury Lowe in October 1902.
3 Henry Frank Sugden born 11 May 1850 at Diswellstown, Castleknock. He married
Edith Bowman on 17 Jun 1879 at Rudland, Hever. Edith applied and was granted a
judicial separation of the grounds of alcohol abuse, adultery and assault in 1893.
She was also granted custody of their six children. Henry died 31 Dec 1899.
4 Emma Frances Mary Sugden born 31 Oct 1852 at Diswellstown, Castleknock. She
went to India as a missionary and joined the Salvation Army on returning to England.
She married George Reid in December 1888 at Berwick. George was a Salvation
Army Brigadier. Emma died in New York in 1930.
5 Premature stillborn son Sugden at Diswellstown 14 Mar 1854.
6 Walter James Sugden born 29 Nov 1855 at Diswellstown married Elphinstone
Agnes Maude on 17 Apr 1880.
7 Henrietta Mabel Sugden third daughter born 20 Oct 1857 at Diswellstown,
Castleknock died unmarried 19 Feb 1919 at Gerrards Cross as the home of her
sister in law.
8 Alice Maud Sugden born 5 May 1859 at Diswellstown. She married Henry
Waldron Bradley on 18 Jun 1890 at Wells and died 12 Jan 1948 at Bournemouth.
9 Wilfred Sugden born 6 Jun 1861 at Diswellstown died 29 Mar 1869 at Wells,
Cheshire aged 7.
10 Blanche Geraldine Sugden fifth daughter born 8 Sep 1863 at Malahide married
Dr Arthur Low Wade on 22 May 1897 at Wells Cathedral.
11 Charlotte Frances Henry Sugden youngest daughter born posthumously on
1 Apr 1867 at Wells, Cheshire. She married Rev Richard Hurt Wilmot on 19 Apr 1893
at Wells Cathedral. She died 16 Aug 1938.
7 Charlotte Sugden born 17 Jun 1812 in London. The Hon Charlotte was living at Thames
Ditton in 1891. She died unmarried at Thames Ditton on 7 Jul 1895 and left 11k in
personal estate. She is buried at St Nicholas’ graveyard in Thames Ditton with her
parents.
8 Harriet Sugden, fifth daughter baptised in Sussex on 12 Oct 1815. She married Rev
Robert Mann of Saxmundham on 10 May 1845 at St Anne’s Church, Dublin. Robert was
the son of the late Robert Mann.
9 Sophia Sugden born circa 1816. She married Captain Frederick D Cleaveland of the
Royal Artillery on 30 Sep 1852 at Thames Ditton Parish Church. Frederick was the son
of the late Colonel Cleaveland, RA. The were living at St Heliers, Jersey, Channel Islands
in 1861. As fourth daughter she died 27 Apr 1872 at Bournemouth.
10 Frank Sugden born 17 May 1817 baptised 27 Dec 1831 at St Pancras. He was educated
at Trinity College Cambridge, graduated 1839 took Holy orders and was ordained in
1840. He was curate of Benbal, Suffolk in 1844 and vicar of Adlingfleet in 1850. As
second surviving son he married Henrietta Maria Saltmarshe on 4 Jul 1850 at Howden.
Henrietta was the eldest daughter of the late Philip Saltmarshe of Saltmarshe, Yorkshire.
He died 17 Jan 1886 at St Leonard’s on Sea.
11 Caroline Sugden born 1819 baptised 27 Dec 1831 at St Pancras. She married John
Turner at Thames Ditton on 11 Aug 1852. John was a captain in the Royal artillery and
the son of Lieut Colonel Charles Turner of the 19th Regiment. She was a widow living
with her sister Charlotte at Thames Ditton in 1891.
12 Augusta Sugden youngest daughter born 1820 baptised 27 Dec 1831 at St Pancras.
She married John Reilly, an attorney on 14 Aug 1845 at Thames Ditton. John was the
eldest son of James Miles Reilly of Cloon Eavin, Co Down. John was later private
secretary to his father in law. Augusta died 29 Dec 1903 late of Chester Square and
left 19k in personal estate.
13 Arthur Sugden born 17 Oct 1822 baptised 27 Dec 1831 at Pancras took holy orders.
He was rector of Newdigate, Surrey and married Annie Jane Elton at St Mary’s
Southampton in February 1854. He died on 26 Oct 1868 by accidentally taking chloroform.
14 William Sugden born 1824 baptised at St Pancras on 27 Dec 1831. He died in Bath on
2 May 1841 aged 16.
