Edward Adderly Stopford second son born 17 Jan 1810 in Co Donegal graduated Trinity
College and took Holy orders. He was son of the Rev Edward Stopford who was later Bishop
of Meath and Catherine Reddish Browne. He married Ann Catherine Duke on the 25 Jan 1837
at Calry Church, Co Sligo. Anne was the third daughter of the late R K Duke of Newpark, Co
Sligo. In 1844 he was appointed rector of Kells and archdeacon of Co Meath. In 1852 he
founded the Catholic Layman and in 1870 he helped draw up the church's new constitution
and personally drafted the third clause of the ‘preamble and declaration’, which ensured that
the Church of Ireland would remain in communion with the Church of England which it still
is to this day. He retired in 1872 and died 21 Apr 1874 at 11 Adelaide Road and is buried at
Ardbraccan, Co Meath. Anne died on 13 Jun 1891 at Cambridge Terrace, Hyde Park, London
where she lived with her twin sister Jane Elizabeth Duke.
1 John George Beresford Stopford eldest son born circa 1838. He joined the 32nd Light
Infantry in 1867 and attained the rank of colonel. He married Louisa Reily Perrier on
22 Sep 1884 in London. Louisa was the daughter of James Black Perrier, JP of Co Cork.
He died 12 Mar 1916 at Knightsbridge.

5 Jemmett Joseph Stopford born circa 1846 in Co Meath. He married Constance Kennedy
on 15 Feb 1887 at Holy Trinity Church, Brompton. Constance was the daughter of the
late Dr Evory Kennedy, a master of the Rotunda Hospital and of Belgard, Dublin and
Queensbury Place, London. The moved to Roebuck Lodge after they married were living
at Newstead in 1890. Jemmett was executor to his brother in law James Gilbert
Kennedy, of Lisnavagh, Rathvilly in 1895. Jemmett was a civil servant in the Land
Commission and the family were living at Wyvern, Bushy Park Road, Terenure by 1900.
Constance was Hon Sec of the District for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Children. Joseph died from diphtheria 18 Aug 1902 at Castlerock, Co Londonderry late
of Wyvern. His funeral service was held at St Anns’, Dawson Street and he was buried in
Tallaght. He left 5k in personal estate. The family moved to England after his death and
were living in Kensington by 1909. Constance lived at Ashbrook Terrace for a number of
years and was living at Old Bawn Bray in 1925. She died 19 Oct 1939 aged 88 at the
Burnaby, Greystones and left 5k in personal estate in England.
1 Alice Katherine Stopford born 26 Mar 1888 at Roebuck Lodge. She married
Christopher Andrewes Wordsworth on the 1 Nov 1909 at St Mary’s Abbots’
Kensington. Christopher was the eldest son of the Rev Canon Christopher
Wordsworth of St Peters Rectory, Marlborough and his wife Mary. Christopher
was the District Commission in Southern Nigeria and died 6 Dec 1910 at Bombay
aged 34. Alice was living with her mother and daughter in 1911. She died in
Hampshire in 1961 and left 24k in personal estate.
1 Mary Katherine Wordsworth born circa 1911 in Bombay. She married James
Smith in July 1937 and they moved to Nigeria where James worked in the
Forestry Service.
2 Edith May Stopford born 12 Aug 1889 at Roebuck Lodge. She entered the Civil
Service in 1915 with the Board of Trade. She was an organising secretary living at
Westminster in 1939. She died unmarried in Kensington in 1961 and left 15k in
personal estate.
3 Eleanor Dorothy (Dorothy) Stopford born 9 Sep 1890 at Newstead, Roebuck. She
moved to England with her mother on the death of her father. She attended TCD
from 1916 to 1921 where she studied medicine. In 1921 she was medical officer
of heath to Kilbrittain Dispensary in Cork and in 1923 she worked at Saint Ultan's
Children's Hospital, Dublin. She married William George (Liam) Price on 8 Jan 1925
at St Ann’s, Dublin. He was the son of the George Robert Price of Lansdowne Road
and Katie Atkins. Liam was a barrister, district justice, local historian and
archaeologist.
Minister Noel Browne appointed her as Chairperson of a Consultative Council on TB
in 1949 by which time she had discovered that children vaccinated with the BCG at
birth, living with a mother suffering from TB were TB free after 3 ½ years. She died
30 Jan 1954 at 8 Herbert Park, Donnybrook and is buried at St Maelruan's Churchyard,
Tallaght. Liam died 23 Jan 1967 at Herbert Park and is buried with his wife.
4 Robert Jemmett Stopford born 19 May 1895 at 28 Highfield Road living with his
mother in Kensington in 1911. He was a member of the British Red Cross Society &
Order of St John during WW1. He was a banker and later a civil servant, he died in
1978 in Dorset.
5 Alice Sophia Amelia Stopford born 30 May 1848 at the Archdeaconry, Kells. She moved with
her mother to Chester after the death of her father in 1874. She married the historian; John
Richard Green on 14 Jun 1877 and edited his books. John was in delicate health so they spent
the winters in Capri, Mentone and one in Egypt. John died in March 1883 from TB and Alice
spent a year editing before publishing her husband's last volume; The Conquest of England.
She was already familiar with Greek and German but she learned Latin so she could master
other sources. She published a 'History of Henry II' and a 'History of the English Towns in the
15th Century'. In 1900 she visited St Helena to investigate the treatment of the Boer War
prisoners held there. In 1908 she published the 'Making of Ireland and its Undoing'. She was
a historian, a nationalist and an independent member of the Seanad until her death on
28 May 1929 at her home on Stephen's Green.
6 James Thomas Adderly Stopford born circa 1849 died 22 May 1937 at Cranmore House, Ivor.
He left 16k in personal estate which after a small bequest was divided between his nieces and
nephew, the children of his brother Jemmett.
