The Stoney family’s connection to Ireland can be traced back to circa 1688 when Thomas Stoney,
eldest son of George Stoney of Kettlewell, York, settled in Co Tipperary. The family owned a
considerable amount of land in the barony of Lower Ormond much of which centred around their
Portland Park estate. By the second half of the nineteenth century descendants of George Stoney
also occupied properties in counties Offaly, Roscommon, Mayo and Donegal.
Cecil Robert Vesey Stoney, born 10.06.1875 in Dinapore, Bengal India, was the only son of Thomas
Butler Stoney. His mother, Annie Olphert, was the daughter of Wybrants Olphert of Ballyconnell
House, Falcarragh, Co Donegal and Mary Anne Constance Fannin, daughter of Robert Fannin of
Dublin. Annie was the sister of Robert Fannin Olphert of Stonehouse, Stillorgan Road, Dublin.
Thomas, born 27.02.1844 was the second son of James Butler Stoney (1814-1897) of Rossyvera,
Newport, Co Mayo and Mary Frances Elwood, eldest daughter of Robert Elwood of Knockadoo, Co
Roscommon and Anna Jane Vesey daughter of Rev Dr Vesey of Derrarbard House, Co Tyrone.
Thomas had a deeply religious upbringing, his father James being an influential member of the
Plymouth Brethren movement. He trained as a civil engineer and was employed by the Department
of Public Works, Dinapore. In 1869 he purchased Oakfield Park Estate, Raphoe, Co Donegal, where
he served as a Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant, High Sheriff and a Captain in the militia. He
died at Oakfield 5.03.1912. His wife Annie died at Oakfield Park 02.12.1923.
Cecil R V Stoney obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cambridge University and was founder
and headmaster Monkstown Park Preparatory School. He inherited the Oakfield Park estate on the
death of his father in 1912, served as Deputy Lieutenant for Donegal and in 1915 described himself
as a 'farmer’. He died February 1952 at Croit Range, Ballajora, Maughold, Isle of Man where he had
lived for a number of years.
He married Frances Maria Nutt Mackenzie 03.04.1902 at St Andrew’s Church, Fulham, London.
Frances, was the daughter of Rev C H Mackenzie, late rector of East Harptree, Somerset. She died
07.09.1911 at Cliff Castle, Seaton, Devonshire aged 38.
1 Dorothy Frances Annie Isabella Stoney, born 20.12.1902 at 1 Belgrave Square South, Monkstown.
In 1932, at Windsor, she married Joseph William Allister Hayes of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Joseph, the son of Joseph Alexander Hayes and Marion Hamilton of 7 Vesey Place, Kingstown, Co
Dublin, was born 17 Jun 1900. Joseph was the nephew of James Herbert Louden Hayes who
between 1896 an 1915 lived at Drummartin House. He fought in WWII and accepted the
surrender of the Italian Air Force in East Africa in 1941. Joseph died 18.01.1953 and he is buried
at Dundonald cemetery, Belfast, Co Antrim.
2 Cecil Charles Butler, born 1 Sep 1906 at Monkstown Park. He died at the same address
16 Apr 1907 having suffered a collapsed lung caused by bronchitis. He was buried in
Deansgrange Cemetery, Co Dublin.
He married secondly Eleanor Caroline Hunt, second daughter of Rev Cannon Henry de Vere Hunt rector
of Ahascragh Church, Co Galway. They were married 08.07.1914 at Aghascragh. Eleanor died of
pneumonia at Oakfield Park, 26 Nov 1918. By 1922 the family had moved to Ascot.
1 Primrose Ethel Mary Stoney was born 2 Apr 1915 at Oakfield Park. She never married and
was involved in youth work before being ordained a deaconess at Newcastle Cathedral in
1949.
2 Thomas Butler Stoney was born 10 Aug 1918 at Oakfield Park. He joined the Royal Air Force
and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for his service during World War II. In
September 1946 he married Margaret Anderson Moon only daughter of the late Captain F
Moon of Liverpool. The couple had two children. By 1952 Thomas was a commercial airline
pilot and was a member of the flight crew that flew Princess Elizabeth home from Kenya to
accede to the throne. The same year Captain Stoney, speaking from a Comet airliner,
introduced the new queen’s Christmas day address. He received an OBE in 1960.
He married thirdly Hilda Grace Riggs, born 20 Feb 1892 at Cadda or Caddagh Glebe, Co Leitrim. Hilda
was the daughter of Rev Frank Riggs of and Georgina McCausland. They were married 16.09.1925 at
Conwal Parish Church, Letterkenny and had one son.
