John Surtees Stockley born circa 1817 fourth son of William Stockley, a veterinary surgeon
with the Royal Artillery, Woolwich and his wife Elizabeth Frances Godbold. They lived in
Corkagh, Clondalkin from 1829 and his father had a Horse Bazaar at Baggot Street and by
1837 he was bankrupt. John was a veterinary surgeon in the Royal Artillery when he
married Alicia Diana Catherine Gabbett on 13 Sep 1849 at St Michael’s Church, Limerick.
Alicia was the second daughter of Joseph Gabbett of Hyde/High Park, Co Limerick. He
was conferred with the Legion of honour in 1856 having served in the Crimea. He was
serving with the Bengal artillery in 1857 and was posted to North America in 1861. A 1st
Class surgeon he retired on half pay in May 1863 and opened a veterinary establishment
to treat sick horses at 212 Great Brunswick Street in July 1863. John died on 23 Sep 1863
at Newington Terrace, Rathmines aged 47 and is buried at Mount Jerome. Alicia was living
with her son John in 1891. She died 22 Oct 1905 at 95 Merton Hall Road, Wimbledon and
is buried with her husband.
1 Lucy Harriett Stockley eldest daughter born 29 Dec 1850 at Montreal, Canada. She
married Gordon Forbes Birdwood on 22 Dec 1868 at Bombay. Gordon was a captain
in the Bombay Staff Corps and the son of Major General Birdwood of Glenburnie,
Bideford in Devon. Gordon died from cholera on 28 Jul 1872 in Bombay aged 34.
Lucy died in 1943.
1 Gordon F Birdwood born circa 1871 in India was a medical student in 1891.
2 Elizabeth Mary Stockley born 3 Feb 1852 at Montréal, Québec. She married John
Alexander French on 4 Aug 1875 at St Bartholomew’s Church. John a solicitor of
Burlington Road was the younger son of the late Rev Edward French, rector of
Ballycullion, Derry. They were living at St Ann’s Donnybrook in 1901 with their three
sons. Elizabeth died 9 Sep 1903 at Castle Grove, Letterkenny. Two of their sons
were killed in WW1 and a window (containing some pieces of glass from the
Cathedral at Ypres) was erected in St Patricks Cathedral in their memory.
3 Alice Josephine Stockley born 22 Jul 1854 became a sister of Charity and died at
Harold’s Cross Hospice on 14 Feb 1904.
4 Ella Georgina Stockley born 9 Jun 1857 in Templeogue living with her brother John in
1891. She died unmarried in 1934 in Buckinghamshire.
5 William Frederick Paul Stockley elder son born 29 Jun 1859 at Fortfield Terrace,
Templeogue was educated at Dr Charles Benson’s Rathmines school and Trinity
College. William was Professor English Literature, New Brunswick from 1886. He
married Violet Osborne on 12 Jul 1892 at St Bartholomew’s Church, Clyde Road.
Violet was the daughter of William Osborne, RHA of 5 Castlewood Avenue, Rathmines
and his wife Anne Jane Woods. He was appointed Professor of Literature at Ottawa
University in 1892 and later filled the position of headmaster at St Mary’s College,
Halifax. Violet died after childbirth on 18 Apr 1893 at Fredericton, New Brunswick.
William became a Roman Catholic in 1894.
1 Violet Annie Alice Stockley born 17 Apr 1893 in Canada living with her Osborne
grandparents in 1901. She was a modern language teacher on the staff of the
Ladies’ College, Cheltenham from 1927 to 1939. She never married and died
20 Mar 1971 at Monkstown and is buried at Deansgrange.
William was appointed professor at University College Cork in 1905. He secondly
married Marie Germaine Kolb on 31 Dec 1908 at the Chapel of the Sisters of Charity
in Munich. Germaine was the eldest surviving daughter of Max Kolb, retired Chief
Inspector of the Botanical Gardens, Munich and his wife Sophie Danvin, a Parisian
pianist. She was the sister of author Anna Mathilde Kolb. William joined the Sinn
Fein movement in 1916. They lived at Tivoli Terrace Lower Road, Cork and William
was elected alderman in Cork from 1920 to 1925. He was elected unopposed as a
Sinn Féin member to the 2nd Dáil for the National University in 1921. William retired
in 1931 and died at Arundel, Ballintemple, Cork, on 22 Jul 1943. He is buried at St
Finbarr’s, Cork. Marie Germaine died at Hollycourt on 18 Nov 1949 aged 81. Her
funeral mass was held at John the Baptist Church in Blackrock and she is buried at
St Finbarr’s Church, Cork.
2 Sophia Geraldine Maria Stockley born 1911 in Cork, her birth wasn’t registered
until 1928. She married James Lawrence Mallin as Saob Ni Stoclai on
11 Oct 1933 at the RC Church of UCC in Cork. James was a civil engineer and the
son of Michael Mallin, a republican executed by firing squad in 1916. James
later known as Seamus worked for the Irish Sugar Company and the Dublin Port
Milling Company. He was an Irish language enthusiast and in 1936 ran as an
independent republican candidate in the Dublin municipal elections and failed
spectacularly. They lived at Hollycourt, Carysfort Avenue from 1949. He was
appointed chairman of the Irish Sea Fisheries Association and became president
of Bord Iascaigh Mhara in 1952.
6 Joseph John Gabbett Stockley born 12 May 1862 at Kilkee Co Clare was educated at
Trinity College and took Holy orders. He was curate of St Peter’s, Streatham when he
married Sara Cant on 9 Sep 1891 at Christ Church, Penrith. Sara was the eldest daughter
of the late Thomas Gibson Cant of Croft House, Penrith. They were living at St Paul's
Vicarage Burton On-Trent with their three children in 1911. Joseph, Chancellor Emeritus
of Lichfield died on 17 Aug 1949 at The Close, Lichfield.
