Stirling Stuart family of Richview
William Sterling (Crawfurd) eldest son of Captain William Stirling (1789–1826) of Milton and
Castlemilk House, Rutherglen, both in Lanarkshire and Jean Stuart. He married Mary Anderson
a daughter of John Anderson of London.
1 William Stuart Stirling-Crawfurd born circa 1819. He was a racehorse breeder and owner.
In 1876 he married the widowed Caroline Agnes Horsley-Beresford (Duchess of Montrose),
aged 58, a daughter of John Horsley-Beresford, 2nd Baron Decies, widow of James Graham,
4th Duke of Montrose and mother of the 5th Duke. She too was a racehorse owner. He
died on 23 Feb 1883 in the south of France. He entailed his estates on his younger half
brother James Stirling Stirling Stuart who had inherited the Castlemilk estate from their
father, but also provided a generous bequest of £120,000 to his wife, in addition to the funds
he granted to her by a marriage settlement. The bequest was challenged by his younger half
brother James.
In 1888, aged 70, Caroline thirdly married 24 year old Marcus Henry Milner MVO, DSO, a
racehorse trainer, soldier and cricketer 46 years her junior. Caroline A Sterling Crawfurd
Milner Montrose died on 16 Nov 1894 and left 181k in personal estate.
William Stirling secondly married Ann Charlotte Maitland. Ann was the daughter of Sir Alex
Gibson Maitland of Clifton Hall.
2 Helen Maitland Stuart born circa 1823 married Henry Everard and lived at Newbold
Lodge, Leamington. She died on 15 Apt 1906. She left her house to her nephew
William.
3 James Stirling Stirling Stuart born 17 Mar 1826. James was a captain in the 1st or Kings
Dragoon Guards and married Harriet Erskine Boswell Fortescue on 1 Jun 1852 at St
Marys Church, Donnybrook. Harriet was the second daughter of Matthew Fortescue
and Erskine Christie of 5 Wilton Square, Dublin and the granddaughter of the late Hon
Matthew Fortescue. She was married from Woodview, Donnybrook the residence of
her brother in law Frederick James Isacke who also hosted the wedding dejeuner.
They honeymooned for a few days in Bray before travelling to Scotland to visit James’
mother. They lived at Richview Clonsheagh from 1855 to 1859 and by 1860 they were
living in Scotland. On the death of his brother in 1883 he became heir of entail to the
estate of Milton. James attempted unsuccessfully to have his brother’s will dismissed
as a forgery as he was in the habit of signing his legal documents with a metal stamp, as
he suffered from scrivener's palsy which made his right hand tremble when he attempted
to write. James died on 8 Jun 1887 and was buried at the family grave at Carmunnock.
Harriet of Hebden, Cottenham Road, Wimbledon died in April 1917 aged 94 and was
buried with her husband.
1 Erskine Mary Katherine Stuart eldest daughter born 25 Apr 1853 at Bellevue near
Donnybrook. She married Charles Shipley Gordon on 2 Aug 1875 at St Mary’s
Episcopal Church, Glasgow. Charles was the third son of John & Lady Isabella
Gordon. Erskine died 24 Feb 1940 at Merton Park, Surrey.

2 William James Crawfurd Sterling Stuart (twin) born 9 May 1854 at Gayfield House,
Upper Leeson Street. He married Constance Mare de Lormet Dennistoun on
9 Jul 1890 at St Mark’s, North Audley Street. Constance was the daughter of
Alexander Dennistoun of Golfhill, Lanarkshire and they had three children.
Constance died 18 Feb 1916 and was buried at Carmunnock. William died on
4 Mar 1938 at Leamington and was buried with his wife.
1 Helen Constance Stuart only daughter married Major H Stevenson in July
1929.
2 James Stirling Stuart born circa 1891. He enlisted at the outbreak of war
joined the 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, and served with the Expeditionary
Force in France and Flanders. He was wounded in action at Ypres and died
from wounds on 9 Nov 1914. He was buried at Haatswell Daads School, Ypres
and is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
3 Douglas Rae Stirling Stuart 12 May 1892 at Carmunnock. He enlisted and was
with the Scots Greys. He was a racehorse owner and breeder. He married
Ruby Dugdale Lord on 13 Dec 1919 at Cheltenham.

2 Anne Stirling-Stuart born circa 1922.
3 Constance Jean Stirling-Stuart born circa 1923 married Major William
Vandeleur Burdon in 1949.
3 Anne Helen Margaret (Annie) Stuart second daughter (twin) born 9 May 1854
at Gayfield House, Upper Leeson Street. She married Major General William
Gordon, CB on 25 Jan 1876 at St Ninian’s Church. General Gordon died in August
1883.
Annie secondly married Rev Erasmus Austin Ommanney in October 1893 at Pitlochry.
She died 19 Non 1924 at Bognor Regis.

She donated a widow to St Ninian’s Church in memory of her father. She died a
spinster on 29 Sep 1934 at Pitlochry. Probate to Muriel Isabella Erskine Gordon.
5 Hannah Geraldine (Lily) Stuart fourth daughter born 9 Oct 1857 at Richview House.
She married Captain Edgar Lambart, RA on 29 Dec 1884 at St Ninian’s Glasgow.
Edgar was the sixth son of the late Oliver Lambart, RN. She died on 29 Jan 1887 at
Portsea Island.
1 Gerald Edgar Oliver Fortescue Lambart born 30 Nov 1885 at 34 Belgrave Road,
Rathmines.
2 Lily Georgiana Harriet Gordon Lambart born circa 1887 at Southsea.
6 Premature son Stuart born 26 Jul 1860 at Brandon Place, Glasgow.
7 Marion Jane Stirling Stuart born 11 Dec 1861 at Castlemilk, near Glasgow. She died
a spinster on 24 Mar 1953 and was buried at Carmunnock. Probate to Helen
Constance Stuart Stevenson.
