Robert Stein born circa 1805. He was living at Parsonstown, Kings County and married Kate
Maria Byrne in August 1839. Kate was the daughter of John Byrne of Bayswell, Co Kilkenny.
Kate died 2 Jan 1848 from fever at Black Pitts and is buried at Glasnevin. He was a maltster
of Rathstewart and was living at 134 Leinster Road in 1867 and later lived at Clarinda Park.
His sister Margaret died a spinster in 1876 and is buried in Glasnevin. Robert died
30 Dec 1881 at 7 Corrig Road late of Clarinda Park and is buried at Glasnevin. He left 10k in
personal estate of which £800 was left to charity including St Michaels Hospital and the St
Vincent de Paul. His sister ’Mother Mary Peter Stein’ died at Mountrath Convent in 1900.
1 Maria Stein only daughter born 1842 married Thomas Francis O’Connell on
23 Feb 1867 at Rathmines. Thomas was an attorney of Gardiner Street and the son of
John O’Connell and Margaret Pointer. Maria died 24 Feb 1868 aged 26 and is buried at
Glasnevin.
1 John Robert O'Connell born 12 Feb 1868. He married Mary Scally, eldest
daughter of Thomas Scally of Deepwell in 1901. He was created a Knight
Bachelor in 1914. Following the death of his wife in 1929 he was ordained a
Roman Catholic priest in Westminster.
2 Robert Francis Stein baptised 13 Oct 1843 at Monastereven, Kildare. He was educated
at the English Institute of Nymphenburg, near Munich. He was an engineer living at
Kingstown and married Mary Josephine McDonnell on 21 Aug 1883 at St John the Baptist
Church, Blackrock. Mary born in Clifton, England was living at Blackrock and was the
daughter of John J McDonnell. Robert was a corn merchant and maltster and died
4 Sep 1905 at Woodview. He is buried at Glasnevin and left 17k in personal estate. He
left £230 to charity including £100 to the parish priest of Roscrea, for the poor of the
parish. Mary died 4 Nov 1921 aged 66 at Woodview, Mount Merrion Avenue and is
buried at Glasnevin.
1 Mary Catherine Stein born 9 Jul 1884 at 7 Corrig Avenue. She was teaching French
and violin at the Dominican Convert, Sion Hill in 1911.
2 John Francis Stein only son born 5 Oct 1885 at 7 Corrig Avenue, Kingstown. He
was educated at Beaumont College Windsor and graduated as a civil engineer.
He went to Canada to practice but after the commencement of war he resigned
his practice and returned to Ireland to join the army. Three times he was rejected
by the Medical Board because of heart troubles but on the 4th occasion he passed.
He joined the 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles on 3 Jul 1915 and left Belfast for the
front in July 1916. He was medically examined on arrival at Rouen and declared
unfit and offered a noncombatant military appointment. He got passed by
another medical board and went to the front. He was killed in action on
28 Aug 1916 and is remembered at Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille and on Irelands
Roll of Honour.
3 Caroline Mary Stein born 29 Oct 1886 at 7 Corrig Avenue attended the Dominican
Convert, Sion Hill and studied German at the English Institute of Nymphenburg.
In 1911 Caroline won the Taylor art scholarships and prize competitions and used
the prize money to travel around Europe for two years. She married Gerard J Scally
on 29.12.1914 at Booterstown Roman Catholic Church. Gerald was the son of
Thomas Scally of Deepwell, Blackrock. After raising their children Caroline held
her first solo show in 1930 in the Dublin Painters' Gallery. Gerald died at
Monkstown Hospital late of Weir View, Island Bridge on 19 Mar 1961. Caroline
died 26 Sep 1973 at Island Bridge.

O’Connell. She was a music teacher at the Dominican Convert, Sion Hill in 1911.
5 Margaret Mary (Pearl) Stein born at Woodview on 30 Nov 1890 living with her
mother at Woodview in 1911. She married Gordon Francis Joyce on 2 Jun 1920 at
Blackrock Church. Gordon was an insurance manager living at Malboro Road in
Donnybrook and the son of the late John Joyce and grandson of the late Pierce
Joyce, JP, DL of Mervue, Galway.
1 Mary Patricia Joyce born 25 March 1921 at Woodview, Mount Merrion
Avenue.
