Edward Henry Woods born 31 Dec 1869 baptised at Karachi, Bombay, India son of Thomas
and Elizabeth Woods. He was a druggist/commercial traveller and agent. He married Lily
Mezies Stanley on 6 Jun 1900 at Rathfarnham Church. Lilly born at the Royal barracks was
the daughter of James Charles Stanley, a sergeant and quarter master and his wife Katherine
Lucas. He was an agent for Mackintosh toffee and his son Stanley drove him around the
country on a Harley Davidson. Lily ran the Protestant Servants Registry office on South Anne
Street. The moved to The Bungalow Ashton Park in 1934. Edward died at Baggot Street
Hospital having been fatally injured when cycling on St Thomas' Road/Stillorgan Road on
23 Jul 1937. Lily died 7 Nov 1963 at Castle Clare Nursing Home, Greystones. Both are buried
at Deansgrange.
1 Violet Woods born 5 Jul 1901 at 18 Brighton Square, Rathgar. She married John Gordon
(Gordon) Burney on 7 Jul 1930 at the Unitarian Church on Stephen’s Green. Gordon was
the son of John Paul Burney, the winner of the first ever motorcycle race in Ireland and
Margaret Louisa (Meta) Gordon. His father was the agent for Enfields and opened a
garage to service and keep Royal Enfield motor cycles on the road during WW1. This
garage would later trade as Burney Brothers (Gordon and his brother Desmond). Violet
and Gordon were living at Hillberry, St Thomas’ Road, Mount Merrion by 1937.
1 Baby Burney died at 8 days on 8 Apr 1938 and was buried with his grandfather.
2 Stanley Woods born 28 Nov 1903 at Kensington Cottage, 21 Brighton Avenue, Rathgar. He
was educated at the High School, Dublin. A motor cyclist, known as the Irish Dasher, he won
29 Grand Prix and had 10 TT wins. He raced for Cotton, Norton, Husqvarna, DKW, Velocette
and Moto Guzzi. He was a director of TT Toffee factory in Granby place alongside his father
in 1928. He married Mademoiselle Marie Louise Dumonteil at the Mairie (town hall), Sixth
Arrondissement, Lyon, France in January 1933 and they spent their honeymoon in
Switzerland. They divorced in 1936.
Stanley a divorcee living in Mount Merrion Park secondly married Mildred Edith Ross at the
Northumberland Hall, Dun Laoghaire on 16 Mar 1936. Mildred of Leinster Road was the
daughter of Frank Ramsey Ross, a buyer for W Holmes & Co of Great Georges Street and his
wife Sadie. Motor racing was discontinued with the start of WWII and Stanley joined the Irish
Army in 1940, rising to the rank of Major with the Fourth Cavalry Motorcycle Riders. After the
war he went into the motor trade business with his brother in law; Gordon Burney and they
traded at Stanley Woods and Burney Ltd from Pearse Street. They put their house at 15 St
Thomas’s Road, Mount Merrion Park up for auction in 1945. Stanley retired in 1966.
