Thomas Southwell born circa 1742 son of Thomas George Southwell and his wife Margaret
Cecil Hamilton of Castle Mattress. He married Sophia Maria Josepha Walsh 7 Nov 1774 in
France. Sophia was the 3rd daughter of Francis Joseph Walsh, Comte de Serrant. Thomas
was an MP and became the 2nd Viscount Southwell on the death of his father in 1780.
Sophie died 6 Jan 1796 at Lancashire and Thomas died on 15 Feb 1796 at age 53. His mother
died in Dublin in 1802.
1 Margaret Southwell born circa 1775. She married Jenico Preston circa 1794. Jenico
was the 12th Viscount Gormanston. After the act of union Jenico supported Catholic
Emancipation jointly with the Earl of Fingall and in 1808 was a supporter of the
Catholic relief bill introduced by Henry Grattan. Viscountess Gormanston died
26 Jan 1820 at Rylands Hotel, Dublin. Viscount Gormanston died 10 Feb 1860 at age
85 at Gormanston, Co Meath.
1 Edward Anthony John Preston eldest son born circa 1796. Edward Count
Preston married Lucretia Jerningham on 19 Jul 1836 at the Roman Catholic
Church and later that day at St Marys Church, Bryanston Square. Lucretia was
the daughter of the late William Jerningham of the Austrian Service and niece to
the Rt Hon Lord Stafford. Edward the 13th Viscount died 28 Sep 1876. Lucretia
died 5 Feb 1891 survived by two sons and three daughters.
1 Jenico William Joseph Preston eldest son born circa 1837 was a
commissioner of education in Ireland. He married the Hon Ismay Bellew
on 8 Jan 1861 at Barmeath, Co Louth. Ismay was the third daughter of Rt
Hon Lord Patrick Bellew and Anna Fermina de Mendoza. Jenico became
the 14th Viscount Gormanston in 1876.
2 Robert Preston third son born 22 Jan 1802 died unmarried 3 Mar 1869 at Abergele.
3 Charles Preston born circa 1804 was educated at Sandhurst. He was a captain
in the 24th Foot and married Alicia Margaretta North in 1853. Alicia was the
daughter of William North of Northbrook, Galway. He died at St Servan on
2 Feb 1888 survived by his wife and two sons.
4 Harriet Preston born October 1805 at Gormanston died 6 Aug 1814.
5 Matilda Maria Preston born circa 1810 married Matthew Elias Corbally of Corbalton
Hall, Co Meath on 17 Jun 1842. Matthew was the only son of Elias and Mary Corbally
and died 25 Nov 1870 aged 73 at Corbalton Hall. Matilda died 22 Dec 1888 at
Corbalton Hall.
1 Mary Matilda Corbally only child married Hon Alfred Stourton on
13 Sep 1865 at Skryne Church, Co Meath. Alfred died at the Hotel Bristol in
Paris in April 1883. He was survived by his wife and ten children.
6 Thomas Preston born circa 1817 married Margaret Hamilton on 9 Aug 1843 at St
George’s Church, Hanover Square. Margaret was the fourth daughter of John
Hamilton of Sandrum, Ayrshire.
2 Thomas Anthony Southwell eldest born 25 Feb 1777 at Hammersmith became the 3rd
Viscount Southwell in 1796 on the death of his father. He married Jane Berkeley on
7 May 1799 at Spetchley. Jane was the youngest daughter of the late John Berkeley of
Hindlip Castle, Worchester. He was appointed a Knight of the Order of St Patrick on
12 Sep 1837 in the room of the Earl of Fingall and was living at Riversdale that same
year. Jane died on 29 Oct 1853 at Hindlip House aged 76. Thomas 3rd Viscount
Southwell died 29 Feb 1860 at Droitwich, Worcestershire. As he had no surviving son,
the title passed to his nephew, Thomas Arthur Joseph.

As only son he died in his 29th year on 31 Dec 1829 in Paris.
2 Laura Maria Helena Southwell born 1805 unmarried in 1860 died circa 1864.
3 Sophia Catharina Southwell eldest daughter born 1809 married Charles Auguste,
Marquis de Choiseul-Beaupré 6 Jun 1830 at St Cloud. Charles was the Marechal-
de-Camp and Aid Major General of the Guard and their marriage contract was
signed by the King.
4 Matilda Maria Southwell third daughter born circa 1810 married Richard More
O'Ferrall, MP Of Kildare on 28 Sep 1839 at Hindlip, Worcestershire. Richard was a
barrister and MP for Kildare and later Longford. He was Lord of the Treasury
from 1835 to 1839 and governor of Malta from 1847 to 1851. Rt Hon Richard
Moor O'Ferrall died 27 Oct 1880 aged 83 at the Marine Hotel, Kingstown and was
buried at Cadamstown. He left 14k in personal estate. He was survived by one
son and a daughter. Matilda died at Granite Hall, Kingstown on 25 May 1882, late
of Ballyna, Enfield, Co Kildare.
1 Ambrose More O’Ferrall born circa 1846 married Jessie Frances Canning.
2 Maria More O’Ferrall married Sir Walter George Nugent.
5 Paulina Maria Eliza Josepha Southwell youngest daughter married Count Henry de
San Damiano at Nice on 17 Jun 1844. Henry was the only son of Count De San
Damiano of Turin.
1 Son and heir San Damiano born June 1848 at Turin.
3 Charles Southwell born circa 1779, attained the rank of Captain in 1803. He died
13 Dec 1851 at Baker Street aged 72.
4 Arthur Francis Southwell third son born circa 1789 in France. He was a major and
married Mary Anne Agnes Dillon on 10 Apr 1834 at Paris. Mary was the daughter of
Thomas Dillon of Mount Dillon, Dublin. They lived at Riversdale, Stillorgan from 1837
to 1841 then moved to Mount Dillon. Arthur died at Mount Dillon on 17 Feb 1849. Mary
Anne died at Bath on 12 Nov 1851.
1 Marcella Maria Agnes Southwell born circa 1835. The Hon Marcella died
unmarried at Mayfield House, Cork on 28 Jan 1901. After her death her property
at Lemlara Carrigtwohill was advertised for sale.
2 Thomas Arthur Joseph Southwell baptised at St Andrew’s Westland Row in 1836.
He was a lieutenant in the 13th Dragoons and succeeded as 4th Viscount
Southwell of Castle Mattress (Matrix), Co Limerick in 1860 on the death of his
uncle. He married Charlotte Mary Barbara Mostyn 24 Aug 1871 at The Pro
Cathedral of our Lady of Victories. Charlotte was the daughter of Sir Pyers
Mostyn and the Hon Frances Georgiana Fraser of Talacre, Flintshire. Thomas
died 26 Apr 1878 at Tekel’s Castle, Frimley, Surrey and was buried at the Pro
Cathedral in Dublin.
1 Arthur Robert Pyers Southwell born 10 Nov 1872 at Talacre, Rhyl became
the 5th Viscount (as a minor) in 1878. He married Dorothy Katherine
Walrond on 28 Oct 1897, in Chelsea, London.
2 Frances Southwell married Major Herbert Stourton, a grandson of Charles
Stourton, 19th Baron Stourton.
3 Jane Mary Matilda Southwell baptised at St Andrew’s Westland Row in 1838
married Justice John David Fitzgerald on 3 May 1860 at Mortlake Catholic
Church. Jane died 26 Apr 1910 at Hove Sussex.
4 Charles Francis Xavier Joseph Southwell second son baptised at St
Andrew’s in 1839. He died a bachelor on 8 Aug 1875 aged 35 at Farnham
House, Finglas.
5 Mary Paulina Anne Southwell born in Co Dublin baptised at St Andrew’s
Westland Row in 1841. She married Sir Henry Evelyn Wood at St Marie’s
Catholic Church, Ryde, Isle of Wight in September 1867 and they had six
children. Hon Paulina Mary died 11 May 1891 at Government House,
Farnham where her husband was commanding at Aldershot. Field Marshal
Sir Evelyn Wood, VC died 2 Dec 1919 at the age of 81.
6 Margaret Mary Southwell born in Co Dublin baptised at St Andrew’s
Westland Row in 1843. She married Charles Standish Barry at Ballybrack
Church on 5 Aug 1869. Charles was resident at Lemlara Co Cork and
Killiney Castle. He was the son of Henry Barry and the Hon Margaret was
resident at Killiney. Charles died aged 50 on 10 Nov 1897 at Lemara.
Margaret died 9 Apr 1916 at Lemara.
1 Henry Standish Barry of Lemara only son born circa 1873 in Co Cork.
He married Eleanor Lilian Lucie-Smith. Eleanor was the eldest surviving
daughter of Major General C B. Lucie-Smith of the Madras Staff Corps.
5 Paulina Southwell married Richard O’Ferrall Caddell of Harbourstown, Co Meath on
19 Aug 1806 at Gormanston. Richard died 3 Jan 1856 at 16 Montague Square aged 75.
Paulina died a widow on 5 May 1856 at Montagu Square, London.
