Matthew John Smyly born 25.07.1848 at Mount Anville Park second son of Josiah Symly, MD
and the philanthropist; Ellen Franks founder of the Smyly Homes. He was a land agent of 35
Upper Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin and married Kathleen Georgina Garde on 01.07.1873 at the
Molyneux Church, Dublin. Kathleen was the second daughter of John Davis Garde of
Fitzwilliam Place and Mount Dillon, Roebuck. Matthew was secretary of the glebes
department of the Representative Church Body of Ireland. They lived at Hollywood,
Carrickmines from 1881 to 1889 and were living at Boden Park, Rathfarnham with their three
children in 1901. Matthew died 30.08.1919 at Boscombe Christchurch, Hampshire. Katherine
died at Burley, Hampshire on 06.03.1926.
1 Ruth Eleanor Smyly eldest daughter born 15.04.1874 at 35 Leeson Park. Ruth, late of
Walford, Shrewsbury Road, Dublin and now of 21 Dartmouth Square married Rev Ralph
Sadlier on 30.04.1907 at Christ Church, Leeson Park. Ralph was Chaplain to HMS King
Edward VII and was the son of the late Canon Franc Sadlier of Newcastle Lyons,
Castleknock.
2 Katherine Violet Smyly born 29.09.1875 at Leeson Park. Katherine infant daughter died
10.11.1875 aged 6 weeks at 35 Leeson Park and is buried at Mount Jerome.
3 Richard Josiah Smyly born 19.09.1876. He joined the North Lancashire Regiment and saw
active service in South Africa and was wounded in 1901. He undertook the reorganisation
of the Turkish Gendarmerie from 1904 to 1906. He served for two years in the Egyptian
Army and was governor of Khartoum. He married Sybil Douglas Pilkington on 20.04.1910
at All Saints, Ennismore Gardens, London. Sybil was the youngest daughter of Thomas
Pilkington of 19 Prince’s Gardens, London. They lived in Hampshire in 1911. Richard served
as brigade major during WW1 at Larkhill, Salisbury Plain and was invalided out in 1918. He
was marshal to the City of London from 1920 to 1924. Richard died on 14.07.1930 at
Sweethay Court, Trull, Taunton, Somerset survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter.
Sybil of 22 Iverna Gardens, Kensington died on 21.10.1931 in Taunton.
4 John Neville Smyly, second son born 20.03.1878 at Ardenza Terrace, Seapoint, County Dublin.
He was a captain of the Royal Artillery and married Ethleen Maude Tennant on 15.02.1904
at the Church of St John the Baptist, Harrismith, South Africa. Ethleen was the daughter of
the late David Tennant of Blowmfontein, Orange River Colony. In 1911 the family were
living at Ballywaltrim, Co Wicklow.
5 Louisa Susan Smyly born 14.03.1880 at 9 Belgrave Square, Monkstown. Louisa married Percy
Edwin Harris on 19.12.1901 in London.
6 Percival Westby Smyly born 20.09.1882 at Hollywood, Carrickmines. Percival married Ellen
Oursland on 05.05.1913 in Everett, Washington.
7 Gordon Lumsden Smyly born 20.03.1884 at Hollywood, Carrickmines. Gordon, a farmer died
unmarried on 20.01.1907 aged 22 years at Walford, Shrewsbury Road. Informant his brother
P Westby Smyly.
