Harry David Jones born 1 Mar 1792 Landguard Fort at the mouth of the River Orwell outside
Felixstowe youngest and fifth son of John Jones, general superintendent at Landguard Fort
and Mary Roberts. He was baptised at St Peter & St Paul, Felixstowe in April 1792. He
entered the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in 1805 and was commissioned a second
lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in 1808. He served in the expedition to Walcheren in 1809
and the actions and sieges of Cadiz, Tarragona, Badajoz, Vittoria, San Sebastian, passage of
the Biddasoa, Nivelle, Nive, Bayonne and he received the silver war medal with five clasps.
He married Charlotte Hornsby on 20 Apr 1824 at St Heliers, Jersey. Charlotte was the
daughter of the Rev Thomas Hornsby and his wife Anne. Her father was rector of Hoddesdon,
Hertfordshire. He was appointed to the Shannon Commission in 1836 alongside Richard
Griffith and Thomas Rhodes.
Harry was elected a corresponding member of ICE in May 1837. He was elected a member of
the Institute of Civil Engineers in Ireland in 1845 and served as ICEI president in 1846. In May
1835 he was appointed Commissioner for Municipal Boundaries in England and in November
of that year he was sent to Ireland to assist the commissioners appointed for the improvement
of the River Shannon. In 1836 he was appointed Commissioner for fixing the Municipal
Boundaries in Ireland and in October of that year was appointed Secretary to the Irish Railway
Commission. He worked on the famine relief committee in 1846-7 and came into conflict with
Lord Charles Trevelyan for criticising the inadequate nature of the government's response.
They lived at Summerville Cross Avenue from 1837 to 1840, Flora Ville, Donnybrook in 1844 and
at Woburn House, Seaview Terrace, Donnybrook 1847/8. He was one of the Dublin Wide Streets
Commissioners from 1848 until 1850.
In 1850 Harry retired from the Board of Works and returned to his military duties. They were at
Bruntsfield Place, St Cuthbert's, Midlothian in 1851. He was appointed to command the Royal
Engineers in the Eastern Campaign in 1855. He was wounded in the forehead by a spent grape
shot and was awarded the medal and clasp, and was knighted. He was on the Council of War
held in Paris in 1856, when he received the Cross of Commander of the Legion of Honour.
In 1856 he was appointed Governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. In 1859, he was
appointed to serve on the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom, whose
recommendations prompted a huge programme of fortification for the British naval dockyards.
He died 2 Aug 1866 following a stroke and is buried in a vault (229) in the cemetery of Sandhurst
college. Charlotte died on 16 Oct 1880 at Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth, Cambridgeshire.
1 Isabella Anne Jones baptised at Gillingham, Kent on 25 Mar 1825. She married John
Jameson at St Mary’s Donnybrook in 1844. John was the eldest son of James Jameson of
Montrose. He was vicar of St Nicholas, Warwick and they were staying at Sandhurst with
her parents in 1861. They had at least five children. He died at his residence Windfield, Co
Galway on 16 Aug 1872 age 56 and was buried at Stillorgan.Isabella died 5 May 1911 at
Hampshire.
1 Charlotte Elizabeth Jameson eldest daughter married Kelynge Greenway in 1865.
2 James Francis Jameson born 5 Jun 1848 took Holy orders. He married his cousin
Maud Jameson in 1879. Maud was resident at Montrose and the daughter of
William Jameson.
3 Henry William Jameson born 1851 at Leamington was a Captain in the 10th Rifles in
1881.
4 Edith Sophia Inkerman Jameson youngest daughter born circa 1855 at Leamington
married Thomas Mack in 1875 at Brompton.
5 Arthur Bellingham Jameson born 15 Jun 1864 at Warwick.
2 Emma Gertrude Jones second daughter born circa 1826. She married Francis Dukenfield
Astley on 7 Oct 1847 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook. Francis was of Dukenfield Lodge,
Cheshire and Fellfoot, Lancashire. Francis died in 1858 and Gertrude died 31 Oct 1862 in
West Dean near Chichester. Their only son Francis drowned at Labrador, Canadan on a
fishing trip in August 1880.
3 Harry Valette Jones eldest son born 24 Sep 1829 in Malta died on 26 Apr 1863 in New
Zealand.
4 Arthur Trefusis Jones second son born 11 Aug 1831 in Malta. He was a captain and surgeon
in the 2nd West India Regiment. He died from African fever on his passage down the river
from Abeokuta to Lagos on 7 Jul 1861.
5 Walter Gordon Jones baptised at Malta on 26 May 1833.
6 Edith Marian Jones third daughter born 1834 in Malta. She married Salisbury Baxendale on
3 Jan 1856 at St Peter’s, Pimlico, Salisbury and they had at least two children. Salisbury, a
barrister-at- law and JP for Hertfordshire died 18 Jan 1907 and was buried at Whestone. He
left 41k in personal Estate. Edith died in March 1920 at Chertsey.
7 Percy Malcolm Jones fourth son born May 1837 at Summerville, Booterstown. He was
assistant superintendent of Police of Vizagapatam District Madras, Presidency in the East
Indies. In 1871 he was on sick leave staying with his mother at Stoke, Foleshill, Warwickshire.
As eldest surviving son he died unmarried on 10 Aug 1871 at Coventry.
8 Montagu Hornsby Jones fifth son born born 8 Nov 1838 at Summerville, Booterstown. He
served with Indian Navy and was engaged at Mohamrah in the Persian Gulf. He was an ensign
of the 34th Regiment of Foot and died unmarried at the Governor’s residence at the Royal
Military College on 9 Jun 1859 and was buried in grave 229 at Sandhurst.
9 Dallas Gordon Jones born 8 Aug 1840 at Summerville. He was a captain in the Royal Engineers
and died 20 Jun 1885 at Ipswich.
10 Cecil Albert Jones seventh son born 1842 at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. He was educated at
Winchester College and Oriel College and took Holy orders. He was curate of Stoke in 1871.
He was living at Abington Pigotts, Hertfordshire in 1921. He died unmarried on 6 Dec 1928 at
Lewes, Sussex.
11 Son Jones born 29 Mar 1844 at Flora Ville, Donnybrook.
12 Agnes Elizabeth Susan Jones born 29 Jul 1845 at Donnybrook. She was living at Lewes St John
under the Castle, Sussex in 1911. As last surviving daughter she died unmarried on 17 Jul 1938.
13 Eveline Mary Jones born 4 Oct 1846 in Donnybrook, Dublin. She died unmarried on 1 Feb 1928
at Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth, Cambridgeshire.
