William Henry Sinclair born circa 1851 in London son of John Sinclair, a master house painter.
William was a master painter, house decorator and married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Harris on
8 Sep 1875 at St Peter’s Dublin.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Morris Harris and his first wife Hannah White. Her father was a
jeweller and antique dealer of Nassau Street and remarried in 1891. His wife (Kathleen Hynes)
was granted a judicial separation in 1906 after a bitter court case, where she accused Lizzie’s
father of violence and enticing little girls into his office. She was later granted a divorce.
William and Elizabeth had eight children all of whom survived in 1911 and the majority of the
family identified as Church of Ireland. They lived at Belgrove in Roebuck from 1892 to 1912. Their
twins were brought up at Nassau Street and at Windsor House, Rathmines in the Jewish faith by
their grandfather, and their maternal aunt Sarah White who acted as housekeeper to the family.
Elizabeth died 18 May 1916 at Morehampton Road and William died on 17 Aug 1926 at 15
Morehampton Road.

married William John Scott on 12 Oct 1898 at St Mary’s Church, Donnybrook. John was a
wine merchant of Trimleston. They were living in Sandymount in 1901and William died
8 May 1902.

1 Hylda E Scott born circa 1900 in Dublin living with her mother and stepfather in 1911
using her stepfather’s surname.
Florence secondly married William Graham at St Mary’s Donnybrook on 4 Jun 1903. William
was a hotel manager and the son of John Graham, a hotel proprietor of The Glebe Killarney.
They lived at St Stephen's Green and later at De Reske, Mountain View Road, Ranelagh. In 1911
their two boys were visiting their grandparents at Belgrove. Their younger son fell into a
muddy pond and was rescued by their older son who cleared his brother's airways of mud and
then carried him back to the house. William served during WW1 and was killed in action on
3 May 1917. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial in France.

married Annie Rankin McMurtry on 26 Nov 1902 at Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines. John was a
building contractor living at Belgrove and Annie was the daughter of the late John McMurtry.

4 Henry Morris (Harry) Sinclair (twin) born born 3 Apr 1881 at Kingsland Terrace, Portobello. He
worked with his grandfather Morris Harris at Nassau Street and brought and won a libel case in
1937 against Oliver St George Gogarty about his book ‘As I Was Going Down Sackville Street: A
Phantasy in Fact’ which slanderously characterised himself, his late brother and their late
grandfather as lechers and usurers. A bankruptcy petition was issued against Henry M Sinclair
1937, lately residing at 28 Half Moon Street, London W1. By 1939 he was residing at Gower
Street, London and was unmarried. He was bankrupt in 1944 and died in 1945.
5 William Abraham (Boss) Sinclair (twin) born 3 Apr 1881 at Kingsland Terrace, Portobello an art
Student in 1901. He worked with his grandfather Morris Harris as dealer in works of art and
lectured on art and painting. He was an amateur violinist and member of the Dublin Musical
Society. He married Fanny Beckett on 3 Sep 1908 at the Dublin registrars office. Fanny was
the daughter of William Beckett. They moved abroad circa 1926 and returned to Ireland in 1934.
William died on 4 May 1937 at a sanatorium in Rathdrum having suffered with acute TB for two
years. He was survived by his wife and four children and was buried at the Jewish cemetery in
Dublin.
6 Edith Louisa Gertrude Sinclair born 15 Jul 1884 South Circular Road baptised at St Stephen’s.
Edith was living at Stephens Green married William Gordon Nicholl on 26 Jul 1911 at St Ann’e
Parish Church, Dublin. William was a coal merchant living at Avoca Lodge, Blackrock and the son
of Thomas John Nicholl, a coal merchant.
7 Morris (Herbert) Sinclair born 14 Oct 1888 at 17 South Circular Road baptised at St Peters. He was
involved in a motor car accident in 1907. He married Marie Pivert at Newry RC Cathedral on
16 Jul 1919. Marie was the daughter of the late Louis Pivert. He worked for H R Owen, Motor
Dealers of Mayfair and was their managing director in 1942 and died in December 1944.
8 Edwin George Sinclair born 12 Aug 1892 at Belgrove, Stillorgan Road. Edwin G Sinclair married
Yvonne Germaine Green in 1941 in London and they had a tobacconist shop at Willesden Green.
Edwin died 3 Sep 1964, his body was found on the railway tracks at Victoria Station. An inquest
heard that his memory was failing and he was inclined to wander.
